I was driving and when turning into a parking lot, I accelerated and the vehicle stalled. It did not go suddenly when accelerating. A couple days later, I use a code reader and have a code listed as P1326. So I take it for a diagnostic at a local shop and I am told it is the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). I was advised to take it to a Hyundai dealer because often these vehicles have manufacture warranty since there’s recalls. There have been some vehicles under this recall Hyundai put out as Service Campaign 966 or 982. They have had vehicles deal with this sensor issue before. Hence why there is a campaign issued. I review to see if there are any recalls on my vehicle and tare none but there are other models listed for this particular issue for Hyundai vehicles. My vehicle was driving fine and it’s fairly new. Low miles then suddenly this happened without warning. I believe it is a recall issue for this model as well.
On Friday, April 18, I opened my panoramic sunroof on my car. When I did, the wind deflector became detached from the sunroof mechanism. So I attempted to close the sunroof and when I did, the would not close all the way and the sunroof appeared to become off track. No the roof will not close all the way leaving it popped open about an inch. I called a couple of Hyundai dealers and they both said that there was an extended warranty provided by Hyundai. Based on my car’s original purchase date, I am out of warranty by 6 weeks on time but under the mileage of 120,000 mileage limit. . I have read that this has caused the glass portion of the sunroof to blow out of the car because it won’t close all the way. I believe that this poses a threat not only to me and my passengers as well as possibly someone riding behind me me getting hit because the sunroof came loose and hitting them as well.
While driving under normal highway conditions, the sunroof detached from the vehicle while still in the closed position. This caused extreme danger to other drivers and property and could have caused a fatality if it would have hit a motorcyclist or other unprotected person. There was a recall for this (Recall Campaign 152: 2015-2016 Sonata Panoramic Sunroof) and the vehicle was delivered to the dealer during the recall period for inspection and presumed fix. There was no warning that anything was wrong previous to the incident.
While traveling on local roads and highways the vehicle transmission randomly down-shifts one or two gears. This has occurred when traveling in any gear from gears 3 through 6. It probably doesn't happen in 2nd gear because that is a transitory gear and not a cruising gear. After quickly moving the shifter from automatic mode into manual mode and then back into automatic mode the transmission returns to the proper gear. However sometimes it has down shifted again in as little as 30 to 60 seconds after resetting the shifter. This has been happening for years. The dealership has been unable to fix it. Because it is random, the issue is not readily reproducible by the repair shop. Sometimes it has happened several times within a 15 minute period. Sometimes it has occured multiple consecutive days. Other times a week or two has passed with no incident.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled, and there were several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that prior to the engine failure, engine oil needed to be added every week. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was not eligible for an engine replacement because an engine software update had not been performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed that the engine could not be replaced before the software update had not been performed. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.
My pearl white 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport’s paint is chipping off while im driving causing paint chips to fly which has almost caused me to wreck. This is happening on the trunk roof and passenger front door.
The low pressure fuel line connector to the high pressure fuel pump failed and sprayed fuel over the hot engine. This could have easily cause a vehicle fire and death. This is a KNOW ISSUE and is covered by a safety recall on 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonatas (Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin 20-01-030H). The same issue occurred on this 2015 Sonata that was built in June 2015. A temporary repair had to be made until Hyundai could inspect it. Vehicle was taken to Holler Hyundai in Winter Park, FL and inspected. Results were forwarded to Hyundai Motors America and the repair was declined because the 2015 models were not included in the recall. It is our belief that the same connector was also used on some 2015 Sonata models prior to the issue being discovered.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormally strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. There was a warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the fuel pump. On 03/14 I was driving down the road the with the sunroof open the wind flap suddenly went to flying making a loud sound I pulled over and saw that it was loose and hanging I went to press the button to attempt to close it and it semi closed. I went and had it looked at and was told that it was broken and could not be closed and needed to be replaced I was told it was a common issue with Hyundais and to contact the company
Hyundai is denying a lifetime warranty claim on my 2015 Hyundai Sonata. Recalls have been completed on my vehicle and even with knock sensor recall completed my engine light is not on and they will not grant me a new engine. If though the Hyundai Dealer agrees that the engine has the bearing issue that would grant me a new engine.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
2015 Hyundai Sonata - original owners. Started burning and engine light came on at 124,000 miles. Took it to dealer to be diagnosed and have oil changed. They called said engine oil was sludged up, they would not even change the oil, and said it needed the engine replaced $9500. We contacted corporate Hyundai who said there was an extended warranty on the engine if the failure was related to connecting rod bearing wear. We were assigned a case and the rep contacted the dealer who said our vehicle didn’t qualify. In doing research we’ve read that this damage cannot be determined without dropping the oil pan. We questioned the rep about this and was told we didn’t qualify because of the maintenance on the vehicle.
Power steering failed, car diagnosed with code C2412 & Hyundai refuses to take accountability
On February 15, I was on my way heading back home driving in the freeway went my car randomly started jerking. I pull over to the side on the road pop the engine, did a visible check and i didn’t see anything. I went back on the road and it happened again, this time my check engine light came on and the car car started to knock very bad since then. I did a diagnostic scan and a code, P1326 came up saying that something is wrong with my knock sensor. Went and took it to a mechanic and I was told that my engine is gone and I need to replace it. Also that Hyundai has been having issues of the engine for a while.
Hello. I'd like to report an engine oil consumption problem. I owe Hyundai sonata 2015, 9 years and 5 months. I have been having engine oil consumption problem over 2 years. It was not that serious around 2023 and 2024, also I know this car has oil consumption problem, so I checked engine oil frequently and refilled it when level went down below the "L" level. Last week, I had an engine alarm whish was powertrain system problem " P2096". So I brought my car to Jeff's garage(180milles from my home) and fixed this problem. When I checked the amount of oil before I drove, level of oil was a little above "L" level. But, when the technician checked the car, they found that engine oil left 1 quart only. (I refilled the oil 4 times already for last 4 month, I drove around 2300 miles for last 4 month) They also showed me the stick without any engine oil. They changed new oil and made sure the level on the stick was above "F" level. However, after I drove around 180 miles, I found the level was between F and L. There is no oil leaking but oil consumption is getting worse. I think some of oil consumption is normal or expected, but this is too much. Please check the safety of this engine.
It seems like the car is skipping.
Gas smell on the passenger side front seat
In 8-2021 the original engine locked up due to a crankshaft bearing lock up. The dealer replaced the entire engine with a rebuilt. It locked up within 10 seconds after I drove from the dealer due to a massive external oil leak from the engine front area. The dealer could not determine where the leak was coming from and prepared a report to reflect this. The dealer then replaced this first replaced engine with another rebuilt engine. I drove it and within 5 minutes of driving the radiator plastic side tank exploded open and lost coolant. The engine then misfired and began to smoke out the tailpipe. and engine areas. The dealer demanded I pay $1,100 for a replacement radiator and then they would confirm that the head gasket was leaking from the combustion chamber into the cooling system that exploded the radiator side tank due to overpressurization from exhaust gas. Another dealer saw that the combustion gas had a large leak that was coming out of the broken radiator plastic side tank and advised repalcing the engine with another engine and radiator. The engine locked up while driving it as a result of overheating and/or coolant inside the cylinder that has the head gasket leak. The dealer and factory refuses to repair the engine that is still under two different kinds of warranties. The warranties expire on 10-12-2025
For about a month now the power steering was going in and out and then just the other day, the power steering went completely out, I am now having it towed to the dealership today 02/11/2025. I've also had oil consumption problems to the point where there is only 1 quart of oil left in the engine when getting the oil changed, had the combustion cleaning done and no help. Hyundai said no to a new engine, car only has 102,000 miles on it, only 10 years old and Hyundai hasn't helped a bit, said that I would have to come out of pocket but I ended up having to spend $600 on the cleaning, which is absurd.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle backfired and sputtered. Additionally, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to exceed 20 MPH while driving uphill. Additionally, the contact noticed the presence of strong fumes inside the cabin, which caused her clothes and hair to smell like fumes. Additionally, the contact noticed that oil was spattering from the exhaust pipes and there was oil leaking onto the tires, causing the tires to leave oil marks on the ground while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where an oil consumption test was performed, and the dealer confirmed that the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. The dealer informed the contact that the combustion chamber to be cleaned out and provided an estimate. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that after the combustion chamber had been cleaned, a claim would be sent to the manufacturer for the engine replacement to be covered under goodwill assistance; however, there was no guarantee. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.
Wednesday evening [XXX] I was driving on a rural Hwy entering onto another Hwy at a one way stop sign. This stop sign was on a blind hill with a partial obstructed view from the right and left. As I pulled out onto the road to go north onto a two lane Hwy towards my home, a truck pulling a trailer came into view from the left. To me the distance looked very close, so I accelerated to avoid a possible collision. Less than a mile down the hill my vehicle lost all forward movement. I costed to a safe stop on the side of this 2 lane Hwy. No warning lights or engine check lights were on the dash just typical signs of some sort of engine failure. The electrical system was fine. Everything else was working as it should. I had no idea I didn’t have forward acceleration until I stepped on the gas at the bottom of the hill. I costed to a safe location on the side of the road. At this point I tried to put the engine in Park from Drive. It would not go into Park. I turned the ignition off and removed the shift release button after which moved the gears to park. I attempted to restart the engine but it would not roll over. I had it towed by AAA from that point to my Hyundai dealership in Cornelius NC. They diagnosed the problem on Tuesday afternoon. The engine had seized up. I am just now learning that this is a class action suit on this particular engine. Very grateful that I was not on Hwy 77 in the fast lane or the express lane. That could possibly have escalated the failure to a deadl
Location: [XXX] Description of Incident: On a rainy morning, while driving to work, I encountered a sudden lane cut-off by a speeding truck as I exited a school zone. I applied the brakes to avoid a forward collision, but the brake system failed entirely. This resulted in the loss of vehicle traction, causing the car to spin out uncontrollably. The vehicle collided with an island, bounced into oncoming traffic, and sustained severe damage, including: •Tires ripped off the rims •Front axle damage Injuries: I sustained a lightly sprained neck as a result of the incident. Vehicle History: The vehicle had been in the custody of the Hyundai dealership just days prior to this incident for an engine/powertrain recall and replacement. The dealership held the car for over a week to address the issue. However, shortly after retrieving the vehicle, the brake failure occurred. Observations and Concerns: •The brake failure occurred after recent service by the manufacturer dealership. •Hyundai vehicles are known to have documented brake system issues, which may have contributed to this incident. •This failure nearly resulted in a life-threatening accident. Action Requested: I am requesting an investigation into the service performed during the recall and the brake system failure. It is imperative to determine accountability and address any potential defects to prevent future occurrences. [XXX] [XXX] - Victim and incident reporter. A rod from the engine made a hole in the engine the destroyed the engine. My wife was driving on a highway wen the failure occurred. She was lucky to be able to get off the highway and safely onto medium before car came to complete stop. The dealer confirmed a rod destroyed the engine. Hyundai asked photos of the engine and other components. No warning lights came on before the failure. The only symptom was the engine was consuming a quart of oil every 1000 miles.
Approximately five weeks ago, my 2015 Hyundai Sonata showed a check engine light. I took it into the dealer and paid a diagnostic fee which revealed the third cylinder misfire in the engine. I paid to have the engine cleaned yet the light continues to stay on and the car has been Running low on oil every time it gets checked the dealer states that the engine needs to be replaced
The Charging system malfunctioned twice. The car is available for inspection upon request. I am not sure if it may put me at risk but it does give the directive to stop the car. I have taken the car to Hyundai the first day it malfunctioned and explained the charging system malfunction. Hyundai only completed any known recalls. My car has never had any warning lights to come on until the charging system began to malfunction.

Unknown I pulled up to a gas station filled up my car coming back frome work like usual i finish I take off not even 1 mile and it started lacking the batteries got drained and it turned off I try to turn it back on and all it does is give me a message telling me to check charging system
Engine sputters, no power. Warning light comes on that there’s a malfunction pull over and do not drive. We had the dealer look at it and he couldn’t find anything wrong.
They try to use a fob key 3-4 time and it won’t sink in and my door is having problems locking without it

Engine burns too much oil and needs oil replenishment every 2 weeks while driving only 100-200 miles. This is extremely hazardous cause on highway the car can stall anytime which has happened in the past. The engine has been fixed for leaks before but still is burning oil and no mechanic will touch it saying it is a common issue of hyundai. Why is this model no part of the class action lawsuit?
When headlights are on auto they can spontaneously turn off. This is accompanied by the headlight selector display in the middle of the instrument panel changing to the parking light symbol. The lights typically switch back to auto and come back on within a few seconds but it can be longer. Most often, but not always this seems to be associated with using the turn signal and being in the middle of a 90 turn. However it has happened at other times as well. Losing headlights and visibility while driving at night, particularly while turning is a hazard. Two dealerships have said they cannot reproduce the problem. It has been going on for multiple years. However is primarily a problem when it starts getting dark early. The issue can be avoided by leaving the lights in the on position all the time.
White paint flaking off hood roof and trunk areas to bare metal. it gets worse when car is washed
My cars' dashboard started cracking after about 3 years of ownership (purchased new), which we though was weird. It is almost 10 years old now and the dashboard has cracked all over. I have taken it to the dealership for recalls and repairs and was told that it was a common problem for these cars, which I'm surprised that it has not been recalled. They said that they would report it but I'm not sure. We have owned more than a dozen cars and we have never seen that happen to a car so early on. I'm not sure if it poses any dangers with air bags or other functions, other than visual defect. I'm just trying to get it reported. I also emailed Hyundai.
My Hyundai sonata is burning oil internally from the engine
Engine not holding pressure. Week of September 22, 2024. Had to have car towed either [XXX] or [XXX] by Champion Towing to Columbus Hyundai. Spoke with Rodney Cockrell. Engine not holding pressure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was driving down the street I went to show down by hitting my brakes they wouldn't slow down the vehicle then the car caught fire
To whom it may concern, I was driving on the highway with my sunroof down as the weather was nice. I started to hear a flapping sound and got off at the next exit. I tried to close the sunroof but it would not close. It looked like the windshield thing for the sunroof detached on the passenger side and blocking it. A minute after I started to drive the sunroof panel detached and flew off my car. It shattered on the street in front of another car that was driving behind me. This car had to swerve to miss being hit. I immediately called the Hyundai dealership crying and the women promised me a manager would call me back. I told the lady I dont know what to do. Do I call the police because a 30-pound glass panel is shattered on the street? Do I call my insurance? She said she would have the sales manager and service manager call me back. I was so shaken and scared from the event I called out the rest of the day from work. I had to uber my son home from school because I was nervous to drive the car. If I didnt get off the next exit; would my sunroof have flown off and caused a car accident? It was really scary to see the panel fly off like paper and almost hit another car. That I could have cause another person to have an accident and they couldve gotten hurt. The whole thing is just crazy to me. I did not get a call back from hyundai yesterday. I will try to reach them today. I will uber my son to school this morning as one of the pieces is sticking out and still flapping. When
Engine turned off running. Car was at Hyundai Dealer, Puerto Rico for 5 months. The car belongs to campaign lots 21-01-066H and 19-01-006H-2, which establishes alternative transportation service, or rental car coverage, the transportation service was denied. In addition, Hyundai PR did not provide me with a warranty period for the new or remanufactured engine, fuel pump and starter. A complaint was filed with DACO (government agency) and it was found in favor of the defendants Hyundai de PR and Sojitz (Cataño, PR) since they did not issue documentation reporting that it was covered under the campaign, they argue that it was as a courtesy (good will) which they also did not present evidence of. After repaired (200 miles) the car presented low voltage, code P0234-P0236 overboost condition, the unit was verified presenting broken cables from one tail of the map sensor. I incurred transportation and crane expenses, and the repair of the cables, and the replacement of the map sensor.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the ABS and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted, who opened a case, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 84,107.
I took the car for 4 recalls it had 2 of which were physical and the other two were software according to them. Took the car back to drop someone off, turned it off and then on; it began losing and breaking on its own at slow rpm’s slamming on the breaks. a minute later after having turned the corner I turned on my hazards and it had continued to randomly happen to the car. It is not consistent it is completely random and I have had a mechanic only inspect it while it happened once because I’ve only been able to have it happen while being inspected out of luck . I’ve gotten several error codes to the car since from p04 misfires. Evap leaks etc. the car was in pitch perfect condition and after that day it has since stopped working properly . I have photos of the mechanics that day even leaving food in the back of my car as if they just relaxed and didn’t do their job as professional as it could’ve have been . They denied anything is wrong with the car and have offered me discounted inspections after claiming nothing was wrong they gave me one free inspection and I haven’t gone back . My engine or censors are messed up. It puts my health and others at safety because it slams on the breaks unknowingly and randomly at low RPMs. The manufacturer has inspected my car and claimed it was okay although they unprofessionally left food and ate breakfast and left trash in the back. (With photo proof) . Last there was NO issues whatsoever with my car until that day. Never had a misfire .
The vehicle experienced an engine failure with minimal warning. While driving 35-50 miles per hour, I experienced a loss of power upon acceleration. Within 1 mile of the trouble starting the check engine light came on. I was able to drive less than 5 more miles before the engine completely stalled and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent service center, where I was informed the engine needed to be replaced. It was then towed to my home and is still there, without repairs.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, the engine replacement request was denied. The failure mileage was approximately 140,829.
Hybrid system failure leading to complete power loss while driving.
My transmission literally went out once on me the SECOND DAY after I financed it. Now, less than a year later, it says I need to replace the transmission again. This is ridiculous.
The air bag sensor located in the front passenger seat does not function. It is available for inspection upon request. Because the sensor doesn't engage, the passenger-side air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident, leaving my passenger at risk of serious injury or death. The Hyundai of Cool Springs dealership in Franklin, TN, has inspected the car and confirmed that the sensor is not functioning. The sensor, if properly working, will show a glowing red light on the dashboard that goes on when a passenger sits in the passenger seat, and goes off after a few seconds. In the case of my car, however, the dashboard light goes on when a passenger sits and stays on (glowing red) the entire time the passenger is seated. This defective dashboard light, according to the Hyundai service technician, indicates that the sensor needs to be replaced. The cost the technician quoted is prohibitive at $3,500.
The wrong turn signal lights up. I know there is a recall for this but my vehicle does not come up when I search for affected vehicles.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated after having the oil changed. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic and the contact was informed there was no oil in the engine. The contact had paid for a better grade of oil in the vehicle. The mechanic inspected the engine and could not find any failure. After having the oil changed the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to another mechanic approximately 3 weeks later who was unable to find any failure with the engine. The mechanic had reset the sensor. While driving approximately 5 MPH, the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was returned to the mechanic who reset the sensor again. After having the vehicle serviced, while driving approximately 50 MPH, the warning light illuminated again, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the mechanic and the contact was informed that the O2 sensor had failed causing the engine to seize. The vehicle had not been repaired. The dealer had been contacted, and the contact was informed that the vehicle had a Salvaged Title and there would be no assistance provided. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 97,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
