Knock sensor has gone bad
Engine malfunction putting my safety at risk. This is a known issue under Hyundai’s active campaign, and the issue was verified by the manufacturer. A PA was required and Hyundai is refusing to repair vehicle due to service records prior to my ownership not being available. This issue was identified on 9/4/2025.
I was driving (I4 highway) when my car suddenly stalled, causing engine failure and almost putting my life at risk, causing an accident. This car has a factory recall for engine damage. I took it to the dealer, and Hyundai refuses to accept the engine repair because the title is rebuilt. The car has no damage to its original engine and is ready to be replaced. They don’t want to assume responsibility.
I am reporting a recurring and unresolved hybrid system failure in my 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited that poses an ongoing safety risk to me and my family. The issue involves a "Hybrid System Warning – Safely Stop and Do Not Drive" message that appears randomly while driving, causing the vehicle to jerking and creating dangerous conditions on the road. This issue first occurred in February 2024 and has persisted through October 2025 despite repeated service visits and costly out-of-pocket repairs. The hybrid battery was eventually replaced after 8+ months of delays, but the exact same warning and jerking symptoms returned in March 2025 and have never been properly resolved. The dealership (Crown Hyundai in St. Petersburg, FL) and Hyundai corporate case management have been unable to replicate or diagnose the problem consistently, and continue returning the vehicle to me in unsafe condition. On October 3, 2025, the same warning reappeared and the vehicle was dropped off again for yet another service attempt. Again on October 7, 2025, I was told to pick up my car, they could not replicate the issue and could not find a code to respond to. To date, I’ve paid $1,748.65 for a repair (air flappers) that did not solve the issue, and spent months without use of the vehicle, continuing to pay for insurance during that time. I believe this is a defective hybrid propulsion system that meets the threshold for investigation and possibly a recall, given the repeat safety risk and lack
While driving, my 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T experienced severe knocking and loss of power due to a KSDS-related engine defect. The check engine light was inoperative, and the engine now makes loud noises and emits fumes. Hyundai declined warranty coverage despite known KSDS issues. This poses a serious safety concern ( I recently purchased the car and been fixing problems every since)
What the consumer services tried to offer (More Information for case)me, instead of a replaced engine that is under my warranty. They have replaced engines before over the mileage as goodwill warranty, but refuse to do the necessary work because of mileages. KSDS is designed for any mileage, and they put a mileage limit on the vehicles warranty, that not just I, but multiple people purchased; where the justice
Engine Failure for a 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.4L In-Line4 (144CI) VIN(F) Odometer 141477. Engine starts then runs hot starts clunking and sputtering and then shuts off. Burns oil and has caused a complete exhaust failure. Vehicle cannot past emissions text. The vehicle was a safety risk as the engine may catch fire and the vehicle was use for transportation to work and children to school. The Engine Light stays on constantly the engine oil light comes on as oil is burned off. Vehicle was purchased at a third party dealer and as the new owner did not receive recall notice or settlement notice.
The engine light started to come on and go off. I had the spark plugs changed and I kept regular maintenance done on oil changes and tune ups. Now my engine is knocking and the vehicle is in limp mo. I took to dealership for extended warranty it was denied due to not properly maintained I turned an additional maintenance records the claim was never reevaluated I took my car home which is only 3 mi away in the engine caught on fire before I could get home $9,000 loss I don't know what to do
Vehicle lost power leaving me stranded. All lights on dash came on, lost power, and barely able to steer to get off the road. We had to have it towed. The vehicle was towed to our mechanic, who states the motor seized up. Mechanic states there is no repair for this issue. Car has just been paid off. Now we have nothing!
The engine light started to come on and go off and when I got the codes ran, it said something along the line of misfire. I had the spark plugs changed and I kept regular maintenance done on oil changes and tune ups. Now my engine is knocking and the vehicle is in limp mode.
The steering column locks up. When start vehicle and make turn to get on road the steering locks up and cannot turn the wheel. This is safety concern and not safe to drive.
I started taking my car to the dealer in 2023 for engine problems, including high oil consumption and stalling. The dealer kept telling me to return in 1,000 miles instead of fixing it. The issue was officially documented again in March 2024 (RO #131797) with ‘Cause: high oil consumption.’ Despite paying \$356.46 for repairs, the problem was never resolved and now the engine has failed
The rubber stopper for the brake light switch on the brake pedal deteriorated and fell apart. This resulted in the brake lights remaining on constantly, cruise control being disabled, and low battery voltage.
The car got the 993 campaign software engine immobilizer update and it was locked with the keyfob. It still got stolen. Thieves broke the lock on driver side door which deactivates the immobilizer. Car was found and police report was filed. It is available for inspection. Many Hyundais that have had the immobilizer update have since been stolen. The 993 software update is ineffective.
Dear NHTSA Investigations Team, We are the owners of a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, purchased in 2016 and still in use today. This vehicle is suffering from severe engine issues linked to the Theta II engine defect, which has been the subject of recalls and class action lawsuits. For nearly a year, we have been forced to add approximately 2 quarts of oil every week due to extreme oil consumption. This is unsustainable, unsafe, and clearly linked to the known recall defect. The most serious incident occurred when my wife was driving on [XXX] in North Carolina, and the vehicle suddenly lost power. It could not maintain safe highway speed and had to be pulled off the interstate, requiring a tow more than an hour back to our home. This was a frightening event that could easily have caused a crash. We later discovered that our vehicle was included in the Theta II engine recall, but we never received notice due to a change of address. Despite this, Hyundai Motor America has refused to help, citing that the recall was “closed.” Shockingly, one representative even told us to “keep putting oil in it until the engine blows,” at which point they might reconsider. This is an unsafe and negligent response to a well-documented safety defect. To make matters worse, when reviewing our VIN for other recalls, we found that the panoramic roof air dam recall was falsely listed as “repaired.” We never received notification of that recall, and the repair was never performed. The air dam detached years ago
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 10 MPH. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road. In addition, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed knock sensor. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown extended warranty for the knock sensor; however, the contact was informed that the repair was not covered under warranty or recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 103,500.
My passenger occupancy mat señor is not working. It has been replaced by Hyundai several times and was a part of a recall. It was replaced in 2006 and 2007. They installed a new version of the senor mat, and the mat senor is defective again. I called Hynindia of America, and they said even though it was a recall and they fixed it as a recall fix, they said that they are no longer responsible. Is that the case?
The vehicle had the antitheft recall service done. On 8/30/25 the vehicle was stolen. It was recovered on 9/1/25 without the catalytic converter. The insurance confirmed it was a total loss. The door lock was tampered along with the engine lock. This was a horrible experience.
While driving a EPS light came in and the steering was extremely hard to drive. I was on the highway so I had to pull over to turn off the car and then turn it on. After turning it on it worked ok for a little and then messed up again and I couldn’t turning the steering wheel again. While driving in the highway my safety was at risk because I could have crashed into another car and hurt my self or other people driving. The car can be inspected at any point in time because it is at a Hyundai dealership where it got fixed a few months before. The problem was confirmed by the dealer. The vehicle has not been impounded and a selected dealer. The EPS warning light and key not detected light came on. Hyundai has multiple issues with their staring and wiring with multiple different Hyundais, including elantra and Sonata, but directly with the Hyundai Sonata hybrid. There are multiple warranties for recall 14325000. I bought this car in November 20 24 and went into the shop December 30 of 2024. It stayed in two shops, including a Hyundai dealer from December 2024 to April 2025 it had been out from April till August and went back into the shop in August. His car I believe is defective and shouldn’t be on the road whatsoever. In logically how does a whole steering column go out and need to be replaced at only 109,000 miles?!

Cracked dash. This is an ongoing issue with Hyuandai since around 2009. Please investigate. Do the research. I normally wouldn't even come on here to complain. This is my 3rd Sonata. Same issue.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that she checked the engine oil every Sunday and became aware that the oil level was low. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was adding one quart of engine oil every ten days. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.
I had a standard oil change done on my car and it was running fine afterwards. Later that evening, my car started smoking and spontaneously burst into flames from the hood. The fire originated in the hood of the car and melted the entire front of my car as well as the entire inside. It burned a lot of fuel and oil, which leaked onto the ground and continued burning on the ground. My car was overtaken by flames in a matter of a few minutes. It burned so fast that there was nothing I could do to stop it. I was not aware of anything wrong with my engine or fuel lines, or anything like that. However, something was very wrong for the engine area to catch fire like that spontaneously.
I have contacted the guy that sold me the car he Refused to fix the recall which is my motor I need Something done , Hyundai won’t Honor their Recall .
On [XXX], my 2015 Hyundai Sonata experienced a sudden and complete loss of power while driving at highway speed on [XXX] in Sarasota, FL. There were no warning lights, error messages, or abnormal performance indicators prior to the failure. Within minutes of losing power, smoke began to enter the cabin, followed by visible flames from the engine compartment. I pulled over, exited the vehicle, and called 911. The fire fully engulfed the vehicle and destroyed personal property inside, including my late father’s ashes. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) The incident caused significant emotional distress and has resulted in a PTSD diagnosis. The sudden nature of the failure and rapid spread of the fire suggest a critical defect in the vehicle’s engine or related components. I believe this represents a serious safety hazard to other Hyundai owners and the public. Documentation, photographs, and insurance/fire reports are available.
My car 2015 (Hyundai Sonata)started leaking oil, it only had 50,000 miles. my mechanic said the motor had too much pressure and kept pushing oil out. He advised me to take it to the dealership for a motor recall. The dealership gave it back with a list of things to fix. replaced the valve cover gasket but still leaked oil. I found out these cars have an oil leak problems that are not being addressed. My car went up in flames 2 weeks later. I have done everything I could to save this car but nothing saved it. My grandkids were in the car and it had traumatized them.
I bought this sonata one month ago. Driving down [XXX] in bonita springs Fla the car shut down. No noise all dash lights came on I got to a safe place. Sat in the parking lot of fresh market for at least 30 minutes went to start it and nothing happened. No crank nothing. AAA came towed it to my house. The filling day I checked the battery it is good. So had it towed to Scotty’s automotive. They called me Friday morning and said the motor was locked up. According to Carfax the car was at brand ton Hyundai in May of 25. I called after I bought the car Carfax said they found the alignment was off. I called to see if they did the alignment they said they did not do it. The wholesale it. My thinking is they did service it according to Carfax report and knew there was signs something and wholesale it. I did not buy it from Brandon Hyundai I bought it from a guy in Leigh acres Fla. We were informed by our mechanic that the engine needed replacement due to a timing chain issue. The engine warning light was blinking continuously, and the RPM would not rise above 1.9 even under acceleration. Upon further inspection, the mechanic found that the issue extended beyond the timing chain - the entire engine appeared to be failing. When we changed the engine oil, it became dirty almost immediately, and visible metal shavings were present in the oil, indicating internal damage. These symptoms suggest potential engine failure, which is consistent with known issues in some Hyundai Sonata models. We believe this may be related to broader engine defects and request that this be investigated for potential recall eligibility.
Using 5 quarts of oil in 3 days.
The car was on a major highway, went to pass another car and the engine stopped working. While trying to get the car off the road there was almost an accident involving on coming traffic.
The plastic fuel pump housing cracked at a spot outside of the fuel tank. When the pump was running, the crack caused the pump to spray fuel outside of the gas tank where the fuel puddled on top of the tank and dripped down over the sides of the tank. During a non-related repair, my mechanic noticed the bottom of the fuel tank was wet with fuel. I'm lucky the plastic fuel pump crack was found before the spilled gas cause my car to catch fire.
The turning signal gives the opposite signals sometimes.
The car burns oil. I have to put oil in it every few weeks. Also will start shaking while acceleration. I replaced engine coils several times. Main issue is burning oil, don't know why.
Our 2015 Sonata has experiencing Engine failure several times due to excessive and irregular oil consumption. Our family’s safety and the safety of others on the roadway were put at risk as the engine slows, shudders and stalls without prior warning and the check engine light does not come on until the vehicle slows and stalls. The vehicle was inspected at a local Hyundai dealership, and they indicated that this is not covered under warranty. Summary of Engine Issues and Failures: 1.May 3, 2022 – 68,671 miles (local Hyundai dealer) Check engine light on, shudder; oil change performed. No cause identified. Paid out-of-pocket. 2.August 23, 2022 – 75,527 miles (retail shop) Car engines failed on highway, towed to service shop. Valve cover gaskets replaced. Paid out-of-pocket in part and extended warranty paid part of the invoice. 3.April 29, 2024 – 109,229 miles (local Hyundai dealer) Excessive oil consumption noted; valve cover gasket replaced again. Paid out-of-pocket. 4.January 22, 2025 – 118,341 miles (local Hyundai dealer) Vehicle stalled en route to airport, towed to dealership; dealership advised oil change. Paid out-of-pocket. 5.May 20, 2025 – 122,000 miles (local Hyundai dealer) Engine codes P0300, P0302, P0303 identified. Dealer diagnosed excessive oil consumption likely due to ring wear or sticking rings, contributing to spark plug misfires. Recommendation: Engine replacement. Despite consistent and timely service, including multiple visits to the Hyundai dealership,
The car has had an electrical issue ever since taking to to get a recall around may of 2023. It will randomly brake and shift the transmission badly while downshifting. I feel as if my make and model falls under the theta II campaign they had to replace certain engines for having a knocking rod be fault and release shaving into the engine causing it to misfire. Not only that but the electrical issue is completely random it happens atleast once or twice a week. It had began ever since I took it for a recall, and when I took it back they found no issue and left food in the back of my car and the chairs leaned back. This was the Fontana Hyundai dealership

My steering rack had to be replaced at less than 55,000 miles. I asked the dealer if this was covered under warranty and they said no. I was charged $4,800 for this repair. I contacted Hyundai USA and they refused to cover the repair. I then realized that I had received a letter from Hyundai stating my car had the extended warranty of 15 years/150m miles for this exact repair. I am on the phone with Hyundai now and they are still refusing to cover this repair, even though they sent me the letter stating my car has this extended warranty. My car is available for inspection upon request. Yes, my safety and the safety of others was put at risk, my power steering would intermittently go out while turning. Yes, my car was inspected twice, once in 2023 and again in May of 2025. Repairs were done in May. I was told this was not covered under warranty but I have an extended warranty from Hyundai for this exact problem. That extended warranty is for 15 years/150m miles. Yes, the occurrence in 2025 threw a code of C168708 - CAN time out VSM (MDPS) and C1814 - CAN message failure SAS.

My lights come on when the car is parked and the engine is off, mostly during the night its happened twice in 2months.
My 2015 Hyundai Sonata has demonstrated multiple instances of unintended acceleration and braking failure: April 20, 2024 – While idling in a drive-thru line, the vehicle suddenly lurched forward without any attempt to accelerate and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. I was unable to stop it. This resulted in the other car being totaled. I took it to a Hyundai dealership afterward, but they found no definitive cause. April 4, 2025 – My daughter was driving and attempted to stop at a red light. Despite applying the brakes, the car did not stop and continued through the intersection, striking the door of another vehicle. May 12, 2025 – Today, while using cruise control set to 55 mph, the car began accelerating beyond the set speed without input. It appears the cruise control system is malfunctioning and not disengaging as expected. The vehicle currently shows no open recalls, but I found that similar issues were previously investigated under NHTSA action DP21003 for this model year. These incidents occurred months apart, but the behavior is consistent and extremely dangerous. I am requesting a formal investigation. The safety of my family and others on the road is at risk.
MI AUTO NO ENCIENDE Y NO DETECTA LA LLAVE SIMPLEMEM NTE NO FUNCIONA NADA NO PUEDO ARRANCARLO
Multifunction box is in the steering column that controls your lights, signals, I put my turn signal on right or left at night and my lights go out,but they come back on.also I have zero warning lights on my dashboard for when something happens it let's you know, well I have none. Hyundai of California says it's not unsafe.it should be a recall because it's a thousand dollars for update..
I've been in communication with Hyundai Henderson, Nevada and Hyundai Corporate as result of engine problems with my 2015 Hyundai Sonata. Corporate instructed Hyundai Henderson to submit a "Goodwill Warranty Repair order. However Hyundai Henderson, who has already determined that the vehicle has total engine failure, is requiring that I complete the thousand mile oil consumption test. My car has already proven to be unable to drive a couple hundred miles before losing acceleration. This is a huge safety issue to ask a consumer to drive this vehicle or to put this vehicle on the road as it is. Please advise on how I may move forward with Hyundai Henderson and Hyundai Corporate. * I have my entire battery/oil/repair/tire history - will scan and submit if needed/ upon request - unable to attach here. I was driving down the road the engine started making a loud knocking noise and as I pulled over it lost power and shut down it would not crank back up I had to have it towed to my house. There was no warning sign.
The car just stopped while driving.
As we were driving on the highway at 65 mph, the car completely cut off. Fortunately, we were able to immediately steer it off the road to avoid an accident. We had it towed and the mechanic at the auto repair shop said the engine was completely shot. He advised us to have it towed to a Hyundai dealership because he had seen this same situation with other Hyundais with limited mileage and said there may be a safety recall or a class action lawsuit. My car has 60,000 miles and is well maintained.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
