Defect. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Risk. An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

Defect. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrid vehicles previously repaired under recall campaign 17V-152. The seat belt linkages for both front seat belts may detach from the seat belt anchor pretensioners.
Risk. If the seat belt linkage detaches from the seat belt anchorage, it can not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will again verify the connection between the seat belt linkage and the pretensioner and additionally install a warning label to prevent future seat belt linkage detachment, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 169.

Component Involved: Hybrid Propulsion System High Voltage Battery / EV Battery Electrical System Power Train Incident Summary: I am reporting a serious and repeated safety defect involving my 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. This vehicle has experienced three separate incidents where warning messages related to the EV/hybrid battery system appeared, followed by a sudden loss of forward propulsion. During these events, the vehicle would not move properly or lost the ability to accelerate safely. This defect creates a major safety hazard because it can occur while driving, increasing the risk of being rear-ended, stranded in traffic, collision, injury, or property damage. I transport my small children in this vehicle and no longer feel it is safe. Detailed Timeline: Initial Incident: Vehicle displayed warning messages involving the EV/hybrid battery system and lost the ability to move forward properly. Vehicle had to be shut off and restarted. Independent Mechanic Inspection: Vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised the hybrid battery system likely needed repair or replacement and recommended service through Hyundai dealership. Dealer Visit #1 – Stew Hansen Hyundai (3/18/2026): Vehicle was taken to authorized Hyundai dealer for diagnosis. Dealer stated they could not duplicate the issue and no repair was made. Second Failure: After release from dealer, same dangerous loss-of-power condition occurred again, resulting in towing and additional inconvenience. Dealer

We pulled up at Hillgreen circle Cockysville MD To drop my boyfriend off at his apartment. I went to pull in the parking spot.I went to put the car into park and it had no brakes. I was slamming them and pumping them. It excellerated and took off. Jumped the curb, went down the hill and into the apartment building. A red light had came on the dash, right before it took off. Seemed like it was changing to gas or the electric mode,or the other way around. The airbag on the passenger side came out deflated, and filled with smoke going into the car. He was the belted front passenger and his elbow went in to the front window. You can tell by looking at it,the hole and spidered around it. He broke his right elbow. I HAD TWO CASE NUMBERS WITH HYUNDAI RELATED TO MY BRAKES AND FUEL EFFICIENCY; THE FIRST WAS HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS CASE#: 12894630 AND THE SECOND WAS HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS CASE#: 15512885. BOTH CASES WERE CLOSED PRIOR TO ME HAVING ANY SAY IN THE DECISION (EMAIL/PHONE RECORDS SHOW THIS). AFTER MY BRAKING UNIT FAILS FOR THE SECOND TIME AND I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT DROP OFF IN FUEL PERFORMANCE (MPG), I ASKED FOR ANOTHER HYUNDAI REP TO TEST MY FUEL CONSUMPTION. WHEN THE RESULTS PROVED TO BE BETTER THAN I HAD EVER SEEN MY CAR PERFORM, EVER, I ASKED FOR THE REST SPECKS. THIS WAS ESCALATED TO HYUNDAI CORPORATE, WHO RESPONDED 'UNFORTUNATELY YOUR CASE MANAGER CANNOT PROVIDE ANY TSB'S BECAUSE IT IS PROPRIETARY INFORMATION. AS FAR AS WARRANTY EXTENSION, REGRETTABLY THAT IS NOT AN OPTION. HOWEVER, IF YOU WERE TO HAVE BRAKE CONCERNS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY, HYUNDAI WILL REVIEW FOR GOODWILL IF THE PROBLEM IS SOMETHING THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY.' THIS ANSWER FAILED TO CONSIDER THE MILEAGE I WAS ALREADY LOSING IN MY HYBRID WHICH PERFORMED WORSE THAN A NON-HYBRID MODEL WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE FAILING. I MADE GOOD FAITH EFFORTS TO REPORT MY PROBLEMS IN THE HOPE HYUNDAI WOULD RESOLVE THEM.

WHILE DRIVING 65 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY, VEHICLE STARTED A RINGING NOISE AND AN ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED ON SCREEN "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING! SAFELY STOP AND DO NOT DRIVE." AFTER THAT, "CHECK BRAKE ." APPEARED AND THE TWO MESSAGES KEPT SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH. THE VEHICLE THEN STARTED TO SLOW DOWN BY ITSELF AND THE BREAK PUSHED DOWN TO THE FLOOR BY ITSELF. THE BRAKES STARTED GRINDING AND I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING, ON THE HIGHWAY, WITH A SEMI RIGHT BEHIND ME. THE VEHICLE DID NOT ALLOW ME TO SAFELY STOP, IT STOPPED ON IT'S OWN. IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR A SHOULDER CLOSE ENOUGH TO COAST TO IT, A MAJOR ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED. I WAS AN HOUR AWAY FROM HOME AND IN ORDER TO GET HOME I HAD TO KEEP PULLING OVER, CUTTING OFF VEHICLE, WAIT A FEW SECONDS, DRIVE AGAIN, PULL OVER, AND WAIT. I WAS ALMOST IN THREE ACCIDENTS. WHEN I GOT HOME, I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND MORE HYUNDAI OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I TRIED DRIVING IT BUT ONCE AGAIN, IT DID THE SAME THING, IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED ME AND SAID THAT THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT I HAVE TO PAY $2700. SINCE THIS IS HAPPENING WITH OTHER VEHICLES, AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, I FEEL HYUNDAI SHOULD FIX IT. I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE A FEW MONTHS AGO WHERE THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STOPPED WHILE I WAS DRIVING 45 MILES, IN TRAFFIC, WITH ERROR MESSAGE,HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING! SAFELY STOP

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IS JUST DIED. NOT SURE WHAT PROBLEM WAS. CAN'T BE A BATTERY PROBLEM CAUSE THE CAR WAS RUNNING. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TRIED TO START THE BATTERY BUT THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ ALL OVER THE INTERNET WITH COMPLAINTS OF THIS HYBRID CAR JUST SHUTTING DOWN WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK AND A ONGOING PROBLEM. THE CAR IS A DEATH TRAP AND I REFUSE TO DRIVE IT ANYMORE. THE CAR ACCELERATION IS MET WITH A PAUSE WHEN TAKING OFF AS WELL. I WAS EXPLAINED ITS WHEN THE CAR SWITCHES FROM BATTERY TO ENGINE FOR POWER. IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL GIVEN YOU COULD PUT YOURSELF OUT INTO A INTERSECTION AND NOT HAVE ENOUGH POWER OR THE HESITATION CAN PREVENT YOU FROM GOING. THE CAR IS THE WORST MADE CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I REFUSE TO DRIVE THIS CAR WITH ME OR MY DAUGHTERS LIFE IN JEOPARDY DUE TO THE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. IT HAS OVERHEAT PROBLEM THAT HYUNDAI SERVICE COULDN'T FIX. IT BROKE DOWN 6 TIMES AND WAS 3 TIMES IN THE SHOP. 4/2/17, I WAS ON FASTEST LANE ON 101 FREEWAY IN DOWNTOWN LA. SUDDENLY THE CAR ALARM BEEPS. DASH BOARD DISPLAYED "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING, SAFELY STOP AND DO NOT DRIVE". THE GAS PEDAL WAS HARD TO PRESS, (GUESS IT GOES INTO PROTECTION MODE. ) FORTUNATELY IT WAS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC THAT NO CAR RAM INTO ME FROM BEHIND. I FORCED THE CAR SWITCHED LANES AND EXIT FREEWAY. AFTER I PARKED, THE CAR FROZED. I CAN'T TURN ON THE EMERGENCY SIGNAL. CAN'T SWITCH THE GEAR TO PARK, CAN'T TURN OFF THE ENGINE... I EXIT THE CAR AND WAVE CARS BEHIND ME MOVE AHEAD, THEN I GOT BACK THE CAR AND WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER IT WAS OFF FOR 30 SECONDS, I CAN TURN THE ENGINE BACK ON AND THE CAR FUNCTIONS LIKE NORMAL. IT WAS UNDER 18000 MILES. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAYS THE COOLANT LEAK AND REPLACED IT. 5/15/17, WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY, I FELT THE CAR WAS INTO PROTECTION MODE, HARD TO PRESS THE ACCELERATOR. BUT THE ALARM DIDN'T SOUND OFF. I SENT IT IN AND THE SERVICE COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY RESET THE COMPUTER OF THE CAR. 6/5/17 THE CAR WAS PARKED IN HOT SUN IN PS FOR 30 MINUTES WHILE ME AND MY REALTOR GO TO CHECK A HOUSE. I STARTED THE CAR FOLLOWING MY REALTOR. I TURNED ON THE AC AND THE ALARM GOES OFF, SAME WARNING SIGN DISPLAYED AND THE CAR JUST FROZE. HYUNDAI SENT A TOW TRUCK AN HOUR LATER. AFTER IN THE SHOP OVERNIGHT, THE SERVICE DEPT SAYS THEY FIXED IT. 6/14. IN PS AG

ABOUT AN HOUR INTO DRIVING HOME ON THE FREEWAY, MY CAR ALERT SYSTEM WENT OFF AND THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY SHOWED INSTRUCTIONS TO CHECK HYBRID CHARGING SYSTEM AND TO CHECK SURROUNDINGS AND TO PULL OVER WHEN SAFE AND TO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE NEEDS MAINTENANCE LIGHT AND THE CHECK OIL LIGHT ALL CAME ON. AFTER ABOUT 15 SECS MY VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER BUT DID NOT TURN OFF; THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOCKED. I PLACED THE CAR INTO PARK AND RESTARTED IT AND THE WARNING ALERT ALARM CEASED, BUT NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MOVABLE AGAIN AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER WHERE A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER PULLED UP AND ASKED ME IF I WAS HAVING TROUBLE. AFTER OUR CONVERSATION, I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE THE ADDITIONAL 40 MILE DRIVE HOME AS THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS WERE CLOSED UNTIL THE NEXT DAY, SATURDAY MARCH 18. I WAS ABLE TO DROP MY CAR OFF IN THE AFTERNOON BUT DUE TO THEIR BOOKED SCHEDULE, IT COULD NOT BE LOOKED AT UNTIL MONDAY MARCH 20TH AND STAYED OVER NIGHT. THE TECHNICIAN CALLED ME THAT DAY AND STATED THAT THE CAR TEST RAN ON IT CAME BACK PASSING AND NO ISSUES FOUND AND THAT THEY DROVE IT ABOUT 20 MILES AND NO ISSUES AND I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP MY CAR ON TUESDAY. HOWEVER, THE SAME SYSTEM ISSUE HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TAKE IT BACK INTO THE DEALERAHIP LATER THAT WEEK AND IT HAS BEEN THERE AS OF 4/21/2017. I RECEIVED A CALL TODAY THAT A REPLACEMENT HYBRID BA

A FEW MONTHS AGO THE VEHICLE STALLED AT A RED LIGHT. I FOUND COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME MAKE, YEAR AND MODEL STALLING ON OTHER OWNERS ON THE INTERNET. WENT TO DEALER AND AFTER NUMEROUS HOURS IN THE SHOP THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. TODAY MY 19 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS ON A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY WITH NO PULL OFF LANES, ONLY CEMENT BARRIERS. THE VEHICLE STALLED AT 60 MPH. SHE ALMOST DIED FROM BEING HIT BY A TRACTOR TRAILER. SHE WAS MISSED BY ONLY A FEW INCHES. THE VEHICLE DID START AGAIN AND SHE GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY. MADE COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS.

ON SAT, OCT 1, AT ABOUT 1 PM I WAS ABOUT TO COMPLETE PARKING THE VEHICLE IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE HUNTINGTON BEACH BRANCH OF CHASE BANK. I FORTUNATELY SELECTED A SITE ON FRONT OF A PLANTER SECTION WITH BUSHES, AS OTHERWISE THERE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURIES OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. I WAS ALMOST STOPPED AND WAS ABOUT TO PUT THE GEAR IN PARK, THE CAR SUDDENLY REVVED UP THE ENGINE AND ACCELERATED VIOLENTLY AND WITH GREAT FORCE, PROPELLING THE CAR OVER THE CEMENT CURBS OF THE PLANTER AND LANDED IN THE BUSHES. THE CAR COULD NOT BE REVERSED OUT OF THE BUSHES AS THE WHEELS WERE LODGED INSIDE THE PLANTER AREA. THE FRONT BUMPER, POSITION LIGHTS AND UNDERCARRIAGE WERE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. AAA ROAD ASSISTANCE HAD TO BE CALLED TO PULL THE CAR OUT OF THE PLANTER. THE INCIDENT IS EXTREMELY SIMILAR TO OTHER SUCH INCIDENTS OF SUDDEN UNWANTED ACCELERATION DOCUMENTED IN YOUTUBE VIDEOS. WE HAVE OPENED A CLAIM WITH HYUNDAI, CASE # 962 9876.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM IS NON-FUNCTIONAL. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY, I HAVE HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES QUICKLY, WHICH HAS REPEATEDLY CAUSED THE WHEELS TO LOCK UP AND THE CAR TO SKID. DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG, AND THAT THE BRAKES ARE ACTING NORMALLY.

I'VE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH ABS SYSTEMS. MY CURRENT CAR CLAIMS TO HAVE ABS, BUT IF I SLAM ON THE BRAKES, THEY LOCK. THAT IS NOT ABS. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND THE DEALER CLAIMED IT MET THEIR ABS STANDARDS. THE BRAKES DON'T MEET MY ABS STANDARDS. I HAVE HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, SOMETIMES GOING AS SLOWLY AS 20 MPH AND THE BRAKES LOCKED AND THE CAR SKIDDED.

BREAK PEDAL UNUSUAL SOUND: WHEN STANDING STILL AND APPLYING PRESSURE TO BRAKE PEDAL, UNUSUAL NOISE CAN BE CLEARLY HEARD. I BELIEVE THIS NOISE SHOULD NOT BE PRESENT. SOUND IS REAPPEARING MORE THAN ONCE THROUGHOUT ALL BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL FROM UPPER POSITION TO ITS LOWEST POSITION. SOUND IS IF SOME METAL PART WAS RUBBING AGAINST EITHER ANOTHER METAL OR PLASTIC SURFACE.
Complaints 1-50 of 54, newest first, reproduced as filed.
No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
