While driving at normal speed car suddenly is unresponsive (will not accelerate, looses power, and is jumpy). The computer triggers a limp mode and alerts every code possible on the dash screen, even though all mechanical parts are fine. This computer/electric failure is a risk that is so unpredictable may cause life threatening accident. The certified repair shop has reviewed, reproduced, and is scratching their heads why Honda hasn’t recalled this because several other Pilots are doing the same.

My engine light came on with the words engine emission problem on my 2017 Honda Pilot. Upon research, there is a Honda Warranty Extension on 2017-2019 pilots if you receive error code P0420. I took my vehicle in for service and was told that is indeed the error code, but unfortunately, the fuel injector and connector are on back order and could not be immediately repaired. There have been several complaints online of the fuel pump injector kits on back ordered and people are not able to get their vehicle fixed.

I pressed the gas padal to gove more power and then the vehicle made a loude sound like as if I was crash into something, and it did not move as usual, there was no power. When I tried to shift the gear back to P, it did not move and the stick was stucked. Later after several tries I was able to drive the car to the dealership and explained what happened. AFter Investgating they concluded there was no problem witht he car. I took it home and drove until Dec, 18, before the vehicle actingd again. It did not move when the gear shit to D or L mode. when I pressed the gas pedal vehicle jumps and stated to move at about 5 miles per hour. As I was giving more gas at about 27 miles per hour there was a hard shifit of the gear and vehicle jumped (jerking?). I took it to the dealership and they were able to repeat what I explained to them and quoted $8400 for the transmission repair, and said I donot have warrenty and have to pay for the cost. I explained to them this is not only my vehicle, but there are other hond apolit have the same issue. Auto idle had been turning off and not re-starting quickly for past 6 months. I asked them to look at it last service. They didn't find anything wrong and said to turn off the auto idle. I did turn off the auto idle most of the time and never had a problem when it was off. Sometimes I forgot to turn off the autoidle. On Dec 5 2023, I was at a red light and had forgotten to turn off auto idle. The car would not turn back on and it was stuck in park. I had it towed and the mechanics said they needed to use a special tool to get it into neutral since the usual protocol had not worked. My car was stuck at a light and I directed traffic to go around me for about 30mins before the tow tuck came. There was no way to push the car out of the way because the wheels were locked due to it being stuck in Park. My safety and the safety of other cars was at risk because the cars went into the incoming traffic lane to go around me. If this had happened on a busy road or in traffic on a highway, it would have been more dangerous. A previous time they replaced the battery and this time they are replacing the starter. I am concerned that the problem will persist since the mechanics say there is nothing wrong with the auto idle. I do see that there is a class action suit and over 200 complaints to NHTSA on the autoidle for Honda Pilots. This is a serious safety concern to have a car stop that will not re-start and then cannot be put into neutral to be towed or pushed to the side.

Vehicle was diagnosed with a damaged #3 rod bearing and required the engine assembly (long block) to be replaced. The Honda dealership retained the engine after inspection and replacement. While driving on the highway with family in the car the vehicle developed a knocking noise from the engine and loss of power. Our safety was put at risk because I was forced to immediately pull off the highway. The engine was moments from catastrophic failure. Once pulled over we found the loud noise was from the engine assembly and were forced to call a tow truck to take the vehicle to a dealership. Honda inspected the assembly and it was replaced at a Honda dealership. No warning lamps or signs existed prior to or after the noise.

If I do remember to turn off the auto engine idle, the engine will stall at stoplights and will not immediately restart. I have almost been rear-ended several times. It just happened again about two weeks ago. The dealership replaced my battery and another part associated with this problem but it still occurs. The dealership refuses to disconnect the auto engine idle. My 2017 Honda Pilot should be included in the latest Honda Pilot recall.

I was at a stoplight at a busy intersection (car previously running well) & when I went to accelerate as the light turned green, my car leaped/jerked forward & would only accelerate to 5-8 mph. All of the warning lights on the dash lit up at the same time. I SLOWLY got out of the traffic & onto the side of the road. I turned the car off & back on. All the warning lights were still on. The car went into drive, but would not accelerate past 25 mph & was jerking. Honda evaluated the car & determined that it was the camshaft that wasn't manufactured correctly. Honda stated that this is a known Honda defect & already had parts packaged to fix the problem. I have all of the paperwork provided to me when the repairs were made. However, this is not acceptable. A known HONDA issue like this should be recalled & repaired ASAP. This is a huge safety concern for the Honda driver & those on the road around them. I was lucky that mine went out at a stoplight, but had I been driving & it shut down it would have been hazardous. As well, if I'm stopped & all of a sudden unable to accelerate that puts me at a very high risk for injury in an accident.

The transmission completely broke/ went out. Honda knows this is a recurrent issue with these vehicles. The fuel injectors had already been replaced on this vehicle at 40,000 miles before Honda was admitting a defect. They are well aware there are transmission issues for the Honda Pilot but are not taking responsibility costing car owners thousands. We were left on the side of the road, needing to use insurance to cover towing. Rather than dealing with labor we sold the car at a great loss of money. This is hear say but the towing complaint reports they are towing Honda Pilots consistently these days. Honda should be held responsible.

This mostly occurred when stopped for a traffic light and I would have to go through a complete restart procedure taking a good amount of time. and causing the folks behind me a great deal of unhappiness. I believe this a significant safety issue because it causes people to drive unsafely in dense traffic environments. The system is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? This caused the folks behind me a great deal of unhappiness. I believe this is a significant safety issue because it causes people to react hurriedly and drive unsafely in dense traffic environments. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? It has not been checked yet. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet - I will take it to the dealer next month for the annual VA safety inspection. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Not that I saw.

The auto start/stop will intermittently fail to restart the engine from a stop after releasing foot the brake pedal. 2017 model year. In 2022 (4 year old vehicle) the auto start/stop failed to restart on three separate occasions from a stop at traffic lights over the course of one winter month. All electronics in the vehicle shut off while dash needles oscillate rapidly. It takes several attempts to restart the vehicle from park. Replaced only the battery with new AC Delco Group 48 AGM CCA 760 on my own. Problem did not reoccur until 18 months later in the summer of 2023 with the same exact symptoms but occurring more frequently now. The battery is 18 months old, the vehicle is now 6 years old. On three separate occasions, the idol stop/start feature has failed requiring me to manually restart the car. Most recently, it took several attempts to restart before ignition fired all while holding up traffic on a busy street. During failed attempts to restart, it made a sound like it was attempting to restart but didn't have enough power. Weirdly, all three occasions have been at the same intersection, a light on an exit after driving non-stop on the interstate for an hour.

Driving on an 4-lane each direction highway at 70 MPH, the Honda Pilot stopped accelerating and a warning light came on stating there is a transmission problem. With my wife and 4 children inside the vehicle, I had to cross 3 lanes of a very busy highway to pull over without having any propulsion from the gas pedal. We were stranded 1/2 mile before the exit for the Charlotte, NC airport. It's an extremely busy exit with trucks and cars constantly passing nearby the vehicle at 70 to 80 MPH. The SUV was towed to a Honda dealership who told us the vehicle needs a new transmission for $8,000. There was absolutely no prior warnings or lights indicating this problem. The transmission temperature to high light came on as I was driving from NY to NC, I had to pull over because I was afraid the car might catch fire as I have never seen or heard of a transmission being to hot. I was on the side of the NJ turnpike and a vehicle could of crashed into me. The light went off and I continued on my journey. Then about another hour or 2 later a transmission system problem light came on. I stopped in VA and went to a Valvoline where they told me I needed transmission fluid. (I had just had an inspection done, so thought maybe there was a leak.) I continued on my way to NC as the light went off after they put fluid in the car. I was about 2 hours away from my destination in NC when the temperature to high transmission light went on again and I had to pull over on 795 again becasue I was scared. I shut the car off for a half hour on the side of the road praying no one would hit into me. I turned the car on, and the light went off and a few minutes later the transmission system problem light came on. I was afraid to get off an exit as I was unfamiliar with the area, so I drove at 55 mph in a 70-mph speed limit. I made it to Wilmington and called the Stevenson Hendrick Honda Dealership there and they could not see the car until Tuesday 7/18 the light was going on 7/15. When I brought it to the dealer the light was off. They told me my Honda Pilot that had only 49,000 miles on it needed a new transmission to the tune of $11,000. I find this to be absurd.

When I come to a stop (like a red light) the auto idle kicks in. When I move my foot from the brake to the gas pedal, the engine shuts off completely. It then takes a couple times before I can get the starter to start again. Therefore I am sitting at an intersection with an engine that is dead while other cars are coming up behind me, either from a stop, or coming up behind me at full speed. I am concerned I will be rear ended. I have taken it in and they replaced the battery which helped for awhile. I then got a notice from Honda, took the car in and they did an "update" on the computer system. Again the other day, while at a light, the engine cut off when I moved my foot from the brake to the gas pedal. No warning lights, no other symptoms that give me warning as to the problem.

For the past two years, I have been taking my Honda pilot to a Honda dealership, complaining of the auto shut off feature. I will come to a stop at a stop sign or stop light. The car would do the auto shut off and when I lift my foot from the break for the car to start again, it won’t. The car will have its lights lit up, but I won’t be unable to turn the vehicle on. I will then have to turn the car off and then start it all over again. All while cars are honking and I’m in the middle of the road. Holler Honda never fixed this problem. I took in videos and photos and I explained it to them and they said they could not replicate the problem and therefore could not fix anything. I continued to drive the vehicle like that. In January 2023 a service bulletin was released where Honda described this exact issue that were happening amongst other 2017 Honda pilot. I took my car in and I said this is exactly what’s happening. My service advisor told me that he needed to do the software update first per the service bulletin. He said if it doesn’t work then to bring the car back and they will do the remainder of the repairs, such as replacing the starter and the assembly. I asked him if we could skip the software update since we’ve been having this issue for over two years and he said no. Dealership stated the Torque Converter needs to be replaced even though regular maintenance was performed previously. Dealership stated that the Torque Converter could go bad at any time and cause transmission issues requiring the entire thing to require replacement and is charging a lot of money for the replacement. Research shows many 3rd Generation Honda PIlot owners experiencing the same exact issue due to the VSC built into the engine and others are getting hit with costs at around the same mileage. We should not be penalized for a poorly designed or manufactured powertrain component that apparently requires replacement just after the powertrain warranty expires.

Beginning in February 2023, around 2AM, my car alarm would sound. Upon inspection, the vehicle dashboard was lit up and clicking relay sounds could be heard from the dashboard. In essence, the car was trying to "start" itself. When the attempted start reached a certain level, the car would recognize the absence of a key fob, and thus, the alarm would sound. To remedy this, I had to leave my key fob in the car - which did not prevent the attempted starts, but at least prevented the alarm from sounding. In the morning the battery was dead from the headlights and interior lights flashing all night. Additionally this was a safety issue as I had to leave keys in an unlocked car. The dealership cannot reproduce the problem, as it happens in the middle of the night (particularly when it is raining or very humid outside). I have found SEVERAL Honda forums with dozens of other Pilot owners who are experiencing the same problem. Dealerships have tried several remedies, all at the customer's expense, including battery replacements, START/STOP switch replacements, etc. The only thing that fixes the problem is replacement of the Control Unit-Smart Power ( 38320-TG7-A32 for my year/make). This part is $400 and labor at my dealership was estimated at $700-800. The part is on backorder. I can only assume it is because there are so many of us Pilot owners trying to get our hands on a working unit. The part is not part of a recall or warranty extension, and frankly, it should be. NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
