2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2018 record →

Dear NHTSA: I own a 2018 Honda Clarity PHV which is under this fuel pump recall: [XXX] Manufacturer Recall Number [XXX] NHTSA Recall Number [XXX] I've called my local Honda dealership in Walnut Creek, CA, and also American Honda directly, to ask when the replacement of the defective fuel pump can be done. I first contacted Honda in January 2024 and was told there is no estimate of when parts will be available. I called the dealership again today [XXX], 2+ months later, and was told there is still no update to the status of the recall. The Honda service rep I spoke with said she heard parts may not be available until late 2024! This is a very poor response to a safety recall - I cannot stop driving my Honda Clarity and am quite concerned about possible catastrophic fuel pump failure and my family's safety, especially during our 800+ mile round-trip drives between our Walnut Creek home and our residence in San Diego. American Honda should accelerate their response to this recall, and not leave their dealers and customers in the dark. I hope NHTSA is able to press Honda to further action to address their unresolved recall. Best regards, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Last week of Febr. 2024, I received a recall notice about the above vehicle. Everything seems fine except the part, fuel pmp, will not be available until the fall of 2024. I called every Honda dealers in Sacramento, Davis, California and they do not have the part. The defective fuel pump may cause the vehicle to stall on the freeway, or any road. Everytime I drive this vehicle I have the anxiety that I may cause an accident that not only harm me but others as well. Can you help, getting Honda to get the fuel pumps to its dealer so we can get it fixed. Many thanks.
There is a fuel pump recall. I was notified on 12/20/23, called Honda to file a claim on 12/21/23 requesting a loaner vehicle due to safety concerns, took vehicle to the dealership to have it inspected on 12/21/23, emailed dealership on 1/2/24 requesting a loaner vehicle due to safety concerns, received a call 3 days later that there was nothing that could be done as part is not available. They told me they could not offer a loaner vehicle. It's been over 60 days since I contacted the dealer about this repair and nothing has been done.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that his wife informed him that the vehicle failed to start upon pushing the "Push to Start" button. The contact stated that his wife was able to start the vehicle after several attempts. Additionally, the contact stated while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed downhill and depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine revved, but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact was unaware if there any warning light was illuminated. The contact's wife was able to drive to her destination. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there would be no assistance because the vehicle had not been diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
All the sensor is showing as a problem on the dashboard the vehicle was not in any accident and no damages to the front radar or front camera sensor. Multiple error problems continue to show on the dashboard.
No Accident occurred but wanted to report a problem with my vehicle. Dealership diagnosed my vehicle with a malfunction in the "multipurpose camera unit/millimeter wave radar." Because of this malfunction, my vehicle lost all its driving assistant abilities such as: Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, land departure warning, lane keep assistance, and automatic emergency braking. Attached a picture of a screenshot of my cell phone showing all the things that are affected by the one camera malfunctioning.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in-Hybrid. The contact stated that the sun visor failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that the front driver’s side sun visor became stiff and difficult to fold down. As a result, the sun visor snapped and distracted him from seeing the roadway. The contact was concerned for his safety. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the sun visor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
I’ve purchased my 2018 Honda Clarity in July of 2023. I haven’t any issues with it, but recently I turned my car on in the morning, and it’s flashing the lights pointing to braking malfunction. ABS braking issue, Dashboard errors illuminating randomly, indicating brake system errors, sometimes locking the parking brake. I haven’t the slightest idea why? The vehicle has 66,000 miles which is minimal considering the life span of Hondas. I will be taking it back to Honda to take a look at this, but I’ve noticed some online complaints regarding the Clarity’s braking system. Specifically, the model I bought 2018. Hopefully, Honda will resolve this with a recall. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I started my car, and it would not transition out of park. The car displayed several warnings including “brake system problem”, “electric braking problem”, and “road departure mitigation system problem”. The windows also would not consistently move up and down. I had to abandon my car so I could get my children home.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Clarity Plugin Hybrid. The contact stated that after an extensive driving period, there was an abnormal sewage odor coming from the vehicle without warning. The contact was then alerted by a passenger in the vehicle that the odor was coming from the toxic gases coming from the battery. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. Upon investigation, the contact was concerned that an improper hybrid battery was installed in the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was not available.
Passenger side mirror exploded while driving in our neighborhood in the evening. Heard a loud bang sound and the mirror fell to the ground. Definitely not hitting anything as there were no objects near by.
The windshield wiper seems to skid past where it's supposed to stop and bump the side molding. It makes an annoying sound and I am concerned it may harm the wiper or windshield. I have not taken it in for repair. I was told by other owners of the car model this is a common issue and the fix is to clean the window up with a clay bar, or take it in for a motor replacement. The former seems to have resolved the issue, but I assume windows shouldn't always be at that level of perfection for functional wipers.
Multiple errors. Possible broken car camera. Because the camera is broken, all safety futures stop functioning like land departure warning, land keeping warning, collision warning. The problem is confirmed by the dealer and the dealer told us it’s known problem with Honda car.
The software in the car dashboard randomly pops errors like - road departure mitigation, brake system, brake hold system problems, etc. This has happened many times this year. I have taken it to the dealership to get fixed a couple of times (most recently on July 16 2022). They say they have reset the software but the problem still reoccurs and is very frustrating since in some cases the vehicle if it has parking brake set remains immobilized. Also, the safety systems in the car like Lane Keep Assist, Road Collision Mitigation and Automatic Cruise Control get disabled when these errors popup. I filed a case with Honda customer service (Case #13070724) on Jun 9, 2022 and have been following up with them weekly to get this fixed
When driving on the highway and car runs low on electric charge the engine revs up and the car slows down when changing to engine mode. When this happens, the car slows down to a crawl, and you are not able to accelerate with a roaring sound. This has happened several times and I took it to have Honda dealer to look at it but couldn't duplicate the problem. There are multiple reports regarding the same problem. It is a safety issue if driving in traffic or going over a mountain pass.
My family has noticed several incidents involving the sensitivity of the FCWS. In most incidents we are accelerating or coasting towards a car that is making a turn and there is plenty of time and space for the driver to conduct their turn. The system will cause the car to shudder and brake and limit throttle application on the accelerator pedal. This has also occurred when approaching slowing or stopped cars where the vehicle will slam on the brakes. These events happened between 5-30 mph. I chose to file this after seeing PE 22-003 as the clarity shares a similar base with an Accord. I've put todays date, but we've had maybe 5-10 incidents in the last 6 months. No crashes or injuries though
When driving up a hill and car runs low on electric charge the engine revs up and the car slows down when changing to engine mode. When this happens, the car slows down to a crawl, and you are not able to accelerate. This has happened five times and I'm taking it to have Honda look at it. I have to leave it with them for serval days so they can try to duplicate the problem. I read online about numerus people who have experienced the same problem. It is a safety issue if driving in traffic or going over a mountain pass. I had it in the shop recently and they couldn't identify the problem, so I have to leave it there for an extended period of them to work on.
When driving on a steep hill, the car switched from all electric to hybrid mode as it ran out of battery only power. The transmission failed to engage and the engine revs increase as if stuck in neutral. The car slowed from 45 mph to 5 mph, then the car accelerated to 20 remaining 1/2 mile to my residence. The car was evaluated by Culver City Honda on May 26, 2021. The dealer advised that they were unable to replicate the anomaly or identify failure codes on the on board diagnostic computer.
AFTER CERTAIN DRIVE MILE CAR DASH BOARD HAS LOUD CLICKING SOUND, WHICH DOESN'T GO AWAY FOR A WHILE EVEN CAR IS TURNED OFF. WHILE DRIVING OR STOPED. DEALERSHIP OR AMERICAN HONDA HAS NO SATISFACTORY ANSWER FOR THE CONCERN. WORRY ME IF VEHICLE GONNA STOP ON FREEWAY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2018 HONDA CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 35 MPH, WHEN HE REAR-ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING FAILED TO ALERT THE CONTACT OF THE VEHICLE AHEAD. NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS RECEIVED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND DEEMED TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE VEHICLE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC OR DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,868.
WHILE I WAS CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL, I SMELLED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR. SINCE THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE HAS A KNOWN OIL DILUTION PROBLEM I HAD OIL ANALYSIS DONE AND THE RESULTS CAME BACK INDICATING THAT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT LEVEL OF FUEL IN THE OIL WHICH CAN DAMAGE THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE ENGINE AND EVENTUALLY RESULT IN AN ENGINE FAILURE. I CALLED HONDA CORPORATE OFFICE TO REGISTER THE ISSUE AND ON FEB 24TH, I HAD MY OIL SAMPLED. I RECEIVED THE RESULTS ON MARCH 3RD AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED HONDA THE SAME DAY TO SHARE THE ANALYSIS. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RECOURSE AS OF YET AND PENDING A RESPONSE.
FEW TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED ESPECIALLY IN EXTREME COLD WEATHER, THERE WILL BE LOSS OF POWER/ACCELERATION EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. WHILE ACCELERATING IT WILL TAKE THE COMMAND ENGINE RPM WILL BE HIGHER BUT VEHICLE IS NOT TAKING UP THE SPEED. EITHER IT WILL STAY TO GO AT LOW SPEED OR SLOWLY IT WILL STARTING TO HALT SITUATION. THIS HAS HAPPENED FEW TIMES(ABOUT 5-6 TIMES). AND IN SUCH SITUATION THERE WILL SOME UNACCEPTABLE NOISE FROM ENGINE. ONE TIME WE WERE AT ABOUT 50MPH SPEED BUT I COULDN'T ACCELERATE (JUST LIKE ABOVE) AND HAD TO STOP THE CAR IN MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY, STOP THE CAR (SHUT THE ENGINE) AND THEN START THE CAR IT STARTED WORKING FINE. THIS HAPPENED MOSTLY WHEN ON GAS AND ESPECIALLY DURING EXTREME COLD WEATHER. WHILE ON FULLY EV MODE IT WORKS FINE, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS, THE CAR WAS ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN. HOWEVER, AS I APPROACHED THE SUMMIT, NO MATTER HOW FAR DOWN I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE CAR WOULD NOT INCREASE SPEED. WITH THE PEDAL COMPLETELY FLOORED (PAST THE HYBRID SYSTEM CLICK POINT) THE CAR WOULD STILL NOT PICKUP SPEED, NOR DID IT SOUND LIKE THE ENGINE WAS EVEN TRYING TO REV HIGHER. AS I KEPT APPROACHING THE SUMMIT WITH THE PEDAL FLOORED, THE CAR STARTED TO SLOWLY LOSE SPEED. AS A RESULT, I WAS NOT ABLE TO KEEP WITH TRAFFIC AND HAD TO MOVE TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE. DURING THIS EXPERIENCE, THE CAR WAS OPERATING IN HYBRID MODE WITH ABOUT 10% BATTERY CHARGE SAVED. MY PREVIOUS PHEV NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR EVEN THOUGH IT HAD LESS SYSTEM HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE. TO EXPERIENCE THIS WAS DISAPPOINTING. NOT KNOWING IF THE CAR WILL ACTUALLY ACCELERATE WHEN I NEED TO IS HIGHLY DISCONCERTING.
BRAKES WHEN IT WANTS TO MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. OR BRAKING ASSIST WILL NOT KICK IN AND ENGINE JERKS.
MY CAR WAS IN MOTION WHILE PREPARING TO PARK IN AN OUTDOOR PARKING SPACE AT WORK ONLY GOING 5 MPH OR LESS. I TURNED MY CAR SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT SINCE THE PARKING SPACE IS AT AN ANGLE WHEN MY CAR ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY AND I CRASHED INTO A FENCE AND ELECTRICAL POLE. MY BRAKES DID NOT WORK AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE ELECTRICAL POLE MY CAR WOULD OF RUN INTO A HOME. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT A HONDA DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICEMAN TOLD ME THAT NO CODES POPPED UP WHEN RUNNING A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THEY ALSO TOOK THE CAR FOR A TEST DRIVE AND STATED THE CAR SHOWED NO ISSUES. THEY ARE GOING TO KEEP IT OVERNIGHT TO TEST ONE MORE TIME. THE MAN STATED HONDA COULD NOT DO ANYTHING UNLESS A LIGHT CAME UP ON THE DASHBOARD.I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AND I'M AFRAID THIS MAY HAPPEN AGAIN. DECIDING OF MAKING A COMPLAINT TO CORPORATE.
SINCE RECEIVING THE LEASED VEHICLE I'VE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALER 3 OR 4 TIMES FOR CHECKS ON THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR SPORADICALLY DISENGAGES GEARS WHEN APPLYING ACCELERATION, LOCAL AND HIGHWAY DRIVING. I'VE REGISTERED THE COMPLAINT WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE LEASE AND WAS TOLD EACH TIME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THEY NEVER TOOK THE TRANSMISSION (OR WHATEVER RUNS IT ) APART TO REALLY SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE. THIS IS TRUE BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT CHECK INTO ANYTHING LIKE THAT IN THE TIME SPACE OF AN OIL CHANGE. ALSO, WHEN I ENTERED THE LEASE, IT WAS NEVER ADAMANTLY SAID THAT THE CAR SHOULD BE ELECTRICALLY CHARGED ON A REGULAR TIME FRAME, THAT IT WOULD RUN ON GAS ALONE. I COULD FIND NO INFO IN THE MANUAL PERTAINING THE NECESSITY OF ELECTRICALLY CHARGING THE CAR.
MY AC HAS STOPPED WORKING TWICE! FIRST TIME WAS SEPT 2019. I WAS CHARGED $300 FOR REFRIGERANT. SECOND TIME WAS APRIL 27, 2020. I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE EVAPORATOR CORE. HONDA CORP TOLD ME IT WOULD TAKE 3 MONTHS FOR THE PART TO ARRIVE IN CA. I LIVE IN PALM SPRINGS WHERE WEATHER CAN REACH UP TO 118 DEGREES. THIS IS VERY UNACCEPTABLE. I WENT ON THE CLARITY FORUMS AND DISCOVERED THAT MANY MANY OTHER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME A/C ISSUES.
I FEEL THAT IT SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT FOR SAFETY SAKE'S,THAT ALL PASSENGER CARS COME WITH SPARE TIRE. PEOPLE WAITING 2-3 HOURS ALONGSIDE THE ROAD IN THE DARK TO GET A TIRE REPLACEMENT PRESENTS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THEM AND OTHER MOTORIST. WITH A SPARE TIRE ,THEY WOULD BE OUT OF HARMS WAY IN MINUTES NOT HOURS..
PAINT DEFECT.... IN A FEW WEEK ONLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED PAINT PEELING AT THE TRUNK AND ALSO THE PAINT AT THE ROOF AND THE HOOD GOT DISCOLORED, HAD DEVELOPED CRACKS AND IT APPEARED THAT SOON WILL START PEELING ..I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO HONDA, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS DEFECTIVE PAINT AND AUTHORIZED THE PAINTING OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED SECTIONS OF THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER AT THE TIME AND DATE OF THIS WRITING I NOTICED PROBLEM WITH THE PAINT AGAIN ON THE NEWLY PAINTED SURFACE . I AM ALSO CONCERNED FOR THE NON PAINTED SECTIONS OF THE VEHICLE SINCE THE SAME DEFECTIVE PAINT WAS USED THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY PROBLEMS MIGHT ARISE IN THE FUTURE AND THE HONDA REP ALREADY MENTIONED IF ANYTHING ELSE GOES WRONG WITH THE PAINT AGAIN THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ANYMORE FOR ME
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 HONDA CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE BATTERY WAS DEPLETED AND THE ENGINE MODE ENGAGED; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS RECHARGED AND WORKED AS DESIGNED. THE ENGINE SYSTEM, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, ROAD DEPARTURE, AND POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATORS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,700. THE VIN WAS INVALID.
WHILE THE VEHICLE HAS LED HEADLIGHTS, THE VISIBILITY AT NIGHT IS NOT THE BEST. THIS IS WORSE DURING RAINING DAYS, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE AN OPTION FOR FOG LIGHTS WHICH COULD HELP WITH THIS ISSUE. THE DRL IS REALLY JUST COSMETIC
WE LEASED OUR VEHICLE IN NOVEMBER OF 2018. FROM THE TEST DRIVE AND GOING FORWARD WE NOTICED HIGH ENGINE IDLE DURING ACCELERATION BUT WAS TOLD THE CAR NEEDED TO BE CHARGED.(WE WERE NEVER TOLD OF ANYTHING REGARDING LOSS OF ENGINE POWER OR ACCELERATION IF THE BATTERY IS LOW! FALSE ADVERTISING!) AS THE DAYS WENT BY WE NOTICED THE ISSUE GETTING WORSE AND THAT THE REVVING WAS ACTUALLY THE CAR LOSING POWER WHEN DRIVING IN ANY CONDITION OR DRIVING MODE. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AND THE BATTERY GETS TO TWO BARS THE CAR WOULD LOOSE POWER AND WILL NOT GO OVER 10 MPH. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MY WIFE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND A FEW WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS OF 60 TO 70 MPH AND SUDDENLY THE CAR DOESN'T WANT TO GO AND THE ENGINE REVS AND THE RPM'S GO UP BECAUSE THE CAR IS LOOSING POWER AS YOUR STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL. MY WIFE HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE. THANKFULLY THERE WEREN'T MANY CARS AROUND HER. THIS IS A DANGERS SITUATION AND IS NOT NORMAL! MY WIFE FEARS FOR HER LIFE AND DOES NOT LIKE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE!!!. WE HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO SERVICE AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THE ISSUE AT LEAST 3 TIMES. THEY CLAIM THAT THEY CANT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THEY JUST TELL US TO PICK THE CAR UP AND JUST SEND US ON OUR WAY. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! WE'VE EVEN PUT IN A CLAIM WITH AMERICAN HONDA AND SO FARE THEY ARE NO HELP AS WELL! PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE SERIOUSLY GETS HURT OR DIES!!!
WE LEASED A 2018 HONDA CLARITY IN DECEMBER OF 2017. SINCE THEN, THE CAR HAS LOST POWER SEVERAL TIMES (OVER 25 TIMES). ATTACHED ARE 2 SEPARATE VIDEO CLIPS SHOWING THE CAR LOSING POWER. THE CAR FEELS LIKE THE ENGINE DISENGAGES AND THE REVOLUTIONS GO UP, BUT THE CAR SLOWS DOWN. I HAVE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY GOING UP A HILL, WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. WE WENT FROM 65 MPH DOWN TO 20 MPH. I HAD TO FULLY STOP IN THE EMERGENCY LANE AND ACCELERATE AGAIN TO CLEAR THE ISSUE. THE LOSS OF POWER HAS HAPPENED ON FLAT RESIDENTIAL STREETS, BUSY MULTI-LANE HIGHWAYS, WHILE ACCELERATING OUT OF A DRIVEWAYS, AND ACCELERATING UP LARGE AND SMALL HILLS. THOUGH IT HAS TAKEN AWHILE TO ESTABLISH A PATTERN, IT APPEARS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE ELECTRICAL CHARGE FALLS TO 1 OR 2 BARS. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALER OVER 3 TIMES WHO UPDATED THE SOFTWARE BUT THAT HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER HAS THE VIDEO CLIPS, THE DEALER HAS STATED THAT THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE OR FIND THE PROBLEM AND RECOMMENDS THAT I CHARGE THE CAR EVERY NIGHT. THIS IS NOT THE CAR I PURCHASED. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLUG IN THE CAR TO CHARGE IT OR USE MY ENGINE TO CHARGE THE CAR. THE DEALER IS ALSO UNWILLING TO SOLVE MY ISSUES OR REPLACE THE CAR.
ON APPROX 6 OCCASIONS, WHEN EV POWER IS USED UP, THE CAR SWITCHES TO ICE MODE WITH ISSUES. WHEN TRAVELING UP HILL, IT FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ENGAGING. THE VEHICLE LOSSES POWER, AND DOES NOT ACCELERATE. THE ICE REVS EXTREMELY HIGH WITHOUT SPEED GAIN. HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED A DOWNHILL SITUATION WITH NEARLY FULL EV IN EV MODE. VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT DISENGAGES DRIVETRAIN. WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. ONE FEELS HELPLESS WHEN THIS OCCURS. MOST OF THE TIME, THE CAR HAD SWITCHES FROM EV TO HV AUTOMATICALLY, WITHOUT ISSUE. BUT, THE ABOVE PHENOMENA HAS HAPPENED 6 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR THIS IS UNSAFE. THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD AS AN EV, WITH A GAS ENGINE TO TAKE OVER WHEN EV RUNS OUT. AT NO TIME WAS THERE ANY EXPLANATION REGARDING POTENTIAL SITUATIONS THAT WOULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO BECOME UNSAFE AND LOSE POWER. ONE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO ENSURE RESERVE EV POWER FOR POTENTIAL POWER LOSS SITUATIONS. WHEN THESE SITUATIONS HAVE OCCURRED, UPON SHUTTING OFF THE CAR AND EXITING, THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF BURNING RUBBER AND OTHER MATERIAL SIMILAR TO TRANSMISSION AND BRAKES, OR HOT METAL. CLEARLY SOMETHING IS OVERHEATING, AND IF THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SHUTDOWN AND ALLOWED TO COOL, A REASONABLE PERSON MIGHT CONCLUDE THAT SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE, ELECTRIC MOTORS, EV BATTERY, OR TRANSMISSION WOULD TAKE PLACE. I AM NO LONGER DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS A PURE EV FOR CITY DRIVING. THE FEAR OF POWER LOSS WITHOUT CONTROL IS EXTREMELY UPSETTING, AND CONSEQUENTLY, NOT GETTI
STATE OF DRIVING CONDITION: THE CAR WAS SET IN CRUISE AT 70 MPH IN HV MODE (NOT CHARGE MODE). EV RANGE WAS 30 MILE REMAINING, APPROXIMATELY 70% OF BATTERY REMAINING. THE HONDA CLARITY PHEV SPONTANEOUS EXCESSIVE REVVING THE ENGINE WHILE CRUISING AT A CONSTANT SPEED ON FLAT HIGHWAY ROAD THEN THE CAR DROPPED SPEED BY ITSELF WITHOUT ANY CAR IN FRONT. ONCE I NOTICE THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE POWER TO REGAIN TO SET CRUISING SPEED, I TURNED CRUISING OFF, SWITCHED THE CAR FROM HV TO EV THEN THE ENGINE STOP DOING HIGH REVVING. I DROVE IN EV FOR 2 MINUTES THEN SWITCH BACK TO HV THEN THE CAR REGAIN ITS POWER TO RESUME CRUISING SPEED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN DRIVERS DID NOT AWARE WHEN THE CAR DECIDED TO CUT ITS POWER IN HV MODE. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I ENCOUNTER THE SITUATION, BUT I'VE NOTICED MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER DRIVER REGARD TO CLARITY PHEV SPONTANEOUS ENGINE REVVING ON MANY FORUM.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON CENTRAL AVE (FROM NORTH TO SOUTH) IN PHOENIX, ENGINE ERROR SIGN AND BRAKE ERROR SIGN WERE FLASHING. MEANWHILE, I COULD NOT SLOW DOWN THE CAR AS I COULD NOT PUSH THE BRAKE PEDDLE DOWN. SO, I JUST HAD TO LET THE CAR CRUISE ON ITS OWN TO SLOW DOWN WITHOUT BRAKE AND FINALLY MANAGED TO TURN INTO PALM LN FOR A STOP. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND COULD NOT IMAGE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I DROVE THE CAR WITHOUT THE CONTROL OF THE BRAKE.
ON JANUARY 13, 2019 MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING ON A 1.5 HOUR TRIP ON A 4-LANE FREEWAY. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS 30 DEGREES. WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, SUDDENLY THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE REVVED UP DRAMATICALLY WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY THE CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN UNCONTROLLABLY. MY WIFE, WHO WAS DRIVING, WOULD PUSH THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE WOULD REV UP, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN. IT WAS AS IF THE WHEELS HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE POWER SOURCE. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS LITTLE TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD SO WE WERE ABLE TO PUT ON OUR EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND GRADUALLY EASE OFF THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY AND SAFELY COME TO A CONTROLLED STOP. WE TURNED THE CAR OFF, LET IT SIT FOR A COUPLE MINUTES, THEN RE-STARTED IT. AS WE TRIED TO ACCELERATE BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR WOULD MOVE FORWARD SOME, THEN THE WHEELS WOULD SEEM TO DISCONNECT AGAIN AND THE ENGINE REV WHILE SHE TRIED TO ACCELERATE, THEN SHE WOULD LET UP, TRY AGAIN, ETC., OVER AND OVER AGAIN, UNTIL GRADUALLY THE CAR BEGAN TO PICK UP SPEED. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS AND SCARY SITUATION. EVENTUALLY WE GOT THE CAR RETURNED TO FULL SPEED AND DROVE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT TO OUR DESTINATION. AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY 5-6 HOURS, WE STARTED THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO HEAD BACK HOME. IT GOT OUT OF THE PARKING LOT FINE, BUT AS WE BEGAN DRIVING ON A 2-LANE ROAD AROUND THE 20-30 MPH SPEED THE SAME PROBLEM RE-EMERGED. THE ENGINE WOULD REV AS MY WIFE PUSHED ON THE ACCELERATOR, BUT THE SPEED OF THE CAR WOU
SO MY WIFE TOOK THE CLARITY ON HER REGULAR COMMUTE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE A BUNCH OF RECALLS WERE PERFORMED ON THE CAR ON FRIDAY. ALONG WITH A01 SERVICE, PRODUCT UPDATES 18-089, 90, 91 AND 97 WERE PERFORMED ON THE CAR. SHE RAN INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION. I'LL LIST THE STEPS BELOW. HAS ANYONE ELSE ENCOUNTERED THIS? I PLAN TO REPORT TO NHTSA ALSO. - SHE WAS DRIVING NORMALLY ON HER WAY BACK HOME IN ECON MODE AT AROUND 70 MPH OR UNDER. PRIOR TO THE UPDATES THE BATTERY NEVER USED TO GO BELOW 9 OR 10% (LAST TWO BARS). BUT TODAY IT WENT TO NO BARS LEFT. - THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS NOT RESPONSIVE AND THE SPEED STARTED DROPPING TO ABOUT 40 MPH. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS CLOSE BEHIND HER. SHE SWITCHED ON HER HAZARDS. - SHE TURNED ON HYBRID MODE AND THE CAR ACCELERATED UP AGAIN BACK TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT WORKED NORMALLY ON THE REST OF THE JOURNEY HOME. SO ON ANY DAY BEFORE LAST WEEK, THE CAR WOULD A) NOT LET THE BATTERY GO BELOW 2 BARS B) KEEP UP SPEED AND AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH TO HYBRID MODE ONCE EV MODE WAS UNAVAILABLE. WHAT HAPPENED TODAY WAS SCARY. EDIT -
AIR VENT IS ABOVE WIPER PARKING SPOT. SNOW MELTS AND FREEZES AGAIN WHEN TOUCH WIPERS. ICE ACCUMULATES ON WIPER EVEN CABIN TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 70F. WHICH MAKES WIPERS USELESS AND DRIVING DANGEROUS IN SNOWING CONDITION.
HI. MY 2018 HONDA CLARITY PHEV SUFFERS A SEVERE DROP IN POWER WHEN SWITCHING FROM THE ELECTRIC MOTOR TO GAS ENGINE. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 60 MPH AND ALL OF SUDDEN IT CAN BARELY GO 30 MPH AND THE ENGINE IS REVVING VERY LOUDLY. THIS ISSUE APPEARS TO BE WORSE IN COLD TEMPERATURES. I NOW HAVE TO MAKE SURE I AM NOT ON THE INTERSTATE FOR THE SWITCH AND SOMETIMES PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR A FEW MINUTES UNTIL IT PASSES. PLEASE HAVE HONDA ISSUE A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 HONDA CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ONCE THE HYBRID VEHICLE FINISHED ELECTRIC POWER, IT WOULD SWITCH TO GAS. WHILE IN GAS MODE, THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE UP A HILL. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE REVVED EXTREMELY HARD AND WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,418. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
IN HV MODE, UP SLOPE, AT 2 E BARS LEFT, ENGINE REVIVE AND LOUD. BUT NO ACCELERATE. FELT LIKE LOST POWER.
CAR REVS UP WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY BUT DROPS SPEED TO 10MPH. IT HAS DONE THIS 2 TIMES ONCE IN TOWN AND ONCE ON US 23 WHILE DRIVING 70MPH. THEIR ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE CAR DOING THE SAME THING TO OTHER CLARITY OWNERS AND THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT HONDA SHOULD TAKE CARE OF! REINEKE HONDA IN FINDLAY OHIO HAD MY CAR FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS AND WHILE TEST DRIVING IT THE CAR DID THE SAME THING FOR THE SERVICE MANAGER MIKE STEVENS. THEY TOOK A CONTROL BOX OFF A BRAND NEW CLARITY PER HONDA'S SUGGESTION AND I AM DRIVING THE CAR AND HAD NO NEW PROBLEMS SO FAR. THEY WERE NOT SURE THIS WOULD FIX THE ISSUE BUT SO FAR IT HASN'T HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS IS A DANGEROUS FAILURE IN THE CAR AND I AM LUCKY I WASN'T DRIVING IN COLUMBUS, OHIO THE 2ND TIME THE CAR DID IT OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED! HONDA NEEDS TO MAKE SURE THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED!!!
3 DAYS AFTER PURCHASE I WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER. I MANAGED TO PULL TO A SLOW LANE BUT THE LACK OF POWER CONTINUED FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES. IT HAD BEEN RUNNING ON BATTERY JUST PRIOR AND I HAD 2 BARS OF POWER LEFT. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 15 DEGREES. THE INTERNAL COBUSTION ENGINE BEGAN TO RACE BUT ONLY BEGAN TO GIVE ADEQUATE POWER TO THE WHEELS AFTER 5 MINUTES. A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE. HONDA CHECKED OUT THE CAR AND SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. I AM HEARING OF OTHER CASES BEING REPORTED LIKE MINE.
MAJOR POWER LOSS WHILE IN HV CHARGE MODE AND ACCELERATING UP A STEEP HILL FROM A STOP.SWITCHED TO EV MODE TO AVOID POTENTIAL REAR END COLLISION.
ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL THIS MORNING (2/8/2019), MY 11 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER MENTIONED HER SEAT BELT BROKE (REAR DRIVER SEAT). SHE MOVED TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BACKSEAT (REAR PASSENGER SEAT). ONCE WE WERE STOPPED, I REALIZED WHAT SHE MEANT BY BROKEN: THE SEAT BELT HAD COMPLETELY FRAYED, BROKE COMPLETELY AND PULLED APART FROM IT'S INTERNAL HOUSING. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, ALL THREE SEAT BELTS IN THE BACK SEAT HAVE FRAYING. THE ONE SHE MOSTLY USED WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN. THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT BELT IS NOT USED AS OFTEN SO THE FRAY/CUT IS ABOUT 1/3 OF THE WIDTH OF THE SEAT BELT. THE REAR MIDDLE SEAT HAS THE LEAST DAMAGE, BUT IS STILL FRAYED/CUT. NO ONE CAN NOW SIT IN THE BACK SEAT WITH FAULTY SEAT BELTS. THE HOUSING SEEMS EXCESSIVELY SHARP AND THAT'S WHAT IS CAUSING THEM TO BE CUT. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALER ASKING FOR A MANAGER, BUT AS OF SUBMITTING THIS, I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A RETURN CALL.
WHEN VEHICLE IS IN ANY MODE THAT REQUIRE THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE, IT PERSISTENTLY GETS STUCK IN A HIGH REV, HIGH RPM, STATE AT ANY SPEED. THIS CAUSES POWER FLUCTUATIONS AND EXTREME ENGINE NOISE. THIS CREATES CHALLENGING AND POTENTIALLY UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO THE SENSITIVE STATE OF THE ENGINE WHEN STUCK IN THIS MODE.
