2016 Ford Focus, VIN: [XXX] Power Train: Automatic Transmission: Control Module (TCM) This complaint details a recurring and severe safety defect in our 2016 Ford Focus. The vehicle's Transmission Control Module (TCM) has failed twice, resulting in sudden, complete loss of power and dangerous stalling incidents at highway speeds. In January 2023, at approximately 8,000 miles, the vehicle suddenly lost all propulsion while traveling on a highway. We were forced to execute a dangerous emergency maneuver across lanes of traffic to reach the shoulder. A Ford dealership diagnosed a failed TCM which had, in turn, caused the clutch to burn out. In July 2025, after only 7,000 additional miles (total vehicle mileage ~15,000), the identical, catastrophic failure occurred again. The vehicle once more stalled without warning on a major highway, creating another life-threatening situation. The diagnostic codes confirmed the same TCM and clutch failure, proving the issue is a persistent, underlying defect and not a random occurrence. This failure is entirely consistent with the widely-documented defect in Ford's Powershift (DPS6) transmission. This problem has been the subject of multiple national class-action lawsuits and is detailed in thousands of other consumer complaints filed. The repeated failure in our low-mileage vehicle underscores that this is a predictable and systemic design flaw that makes the vehicle inherently unsafe. We attempted to address this critical safety failure dir

Transmission Control Module failed and i had that replaced. Now the clutch pack failed and had that replaced. Now it says transmission hot and to pull over. All of this has been recalled on 2012 to 2016 but for some reason my car is not and its the same powershift transmission. Im over 4000 dollars into these repairs and still having problems.
Restraint Module went bad and after I looked it up online this was a recall for my year make and model.
The transmission is slipping. Research shows it's a known issue. Ford has acknowledged the issue and extended support. My local ford dealership is refusing to fix the issue even though I fall within the extended service mileage. I called 2 transmission shops who refused to work on this specific model due to the dual clutch design and known problems. Attached is a letter I am disseminating requesting proper assistance with this issue.
Additional information related to a case I opened earlier today Vehicle: 2016 Ford Focus SE Component: PowerTrain – Transmission My 2016 Ford Focus has experienced three failed clutch packs with the Ford DPS6 PowerShift transmission. The first clutch was replaced at ~22,000 miles, the second at ~27,500 miles, and it now requires a third replacement at 80,000 miles. This is a known and dangerous defect that was part of a class-action lawsuit. Despite multiple replacements and low mileage, Ford is requiring me to pay over $4,000 for a third repair. This transmission causes slipping, hesitation, and safety issues when pulling into traffic or hills. I am requesting that NHTSA re-investigate or expand the scope of past complaints on this vehicle to include continued post-settlement failures.
Went to refuel my car with gas. Got into my car and it didn’t start right away. When it finally did the check engine light came on. I took to go check it out and was told the fuel tank/canister purge valve was faulty. I tried contacting ford to see if under warranty and or recalled. But nothing has come out of it. My 2016 Ford Focus only has 67k miles on it

And all my warranty is ran out and still having transmission problems.

The dual clutch for the 2016 Ford Focus SE. This model is showing an open recall on active listings but not showing up in a search via VIN. Yes the vehicle is still available for inspection. The vehicle’s transmission overheats which has left us stranded, on the interstate and regular roads, maybe times. The vehicle has broken down multiple times in the middle of the road and put us at risk of a collision. I have verified with the dealer that this is a problem with these specific cars but only after I had purchased it. The problem started right away after purchase by showing on the dash that the transmission was overheating but that same message would go back off, resulting in the dealer refusing to take a look at it under warranty. I’ve seen many other customers complain of this problem and eventually end up losing a lot of money because Ford and the dealer will not do anything to fix it. They wouldn’t even look at the vehicle to confirm that this was the problem but instead gave me the 1-800 number for Ford and then Ford told me to take it back up to the dealer who refused to even take a complaint.

Purchased 2016 Ford Focus SE with 132,000 Mi on Wednesday June 11, 2025. Drove with no problem when I took it for a long test drive. Drove it Thursday June 12, 2025 with no problem. On Friday June 13, 2025 I thought I felt a little slippage going from 1st to 2nd gear. On Friday June 14, 2025 my 17yr old daughter drove it to the beach and while driving back home she got a msg "Transmission Overheating". She pulled over and called me. I was able to put the key 2 clicks into the starting position and switch to neutral where I got a msg " Transmission now Ready". I then put my scanner on it and was it read Shift Error PO7A3, Clutch "A" Disengagement P286F, Clutch "B" Stuck Engaged P287A. I took it to the dealer I bought it from but it was a As Is Purchase. The transmission is awful, delayed acceleration, rough shifting and lack of power. Delayed acceleration is the main issue due to it “ lagging “ in the middle of intersections and at green lights, etc. may fall under the ford focus lawsuit but when I look up my vin on this website, no recalls pop up but all the signs of the other models recalled are shown and present in my model of the Focus.

Was at a red light and the clutch wouldn’t work. I had to pull the clutch up with my foot. I was so afraid someone was going to hit me. Then when you drive the car sometimes the clutch sticks and you can’t put into gear. I looked on the internet to see if other people were having the same problem. There were so many people who had the problem. I called Ford Dealer up to see if a recall . The mechanic said no they haven’t had the problem. I told him to look it up cause there was all kinds of people with the problem. I called Ford up to do a complaint. At that time was told no recalls to have anything fixed on the car. I took it to my mechanic and it was what the internet people had said the problem is. plastic actuator arm to the back of the pedal is made of PLASTIC and is breaking clean off!! My car is in the shop getting fixed. I can send the bill when I pick my vehicle up. Was told anywhere from 850 to 1000.

The transmission (powertrain) on my 2016 Ford Focus SE (VIN: [XXX] ) has had persistent issues since shortly after I purchased the car in April 2022. It has not completely failed yet, but the symptoms — including shuddering, slipping, jerking, and hesitation when accelerating or shifting — have worsened over time. It uses a dual-clutch transmission with no dipstick, making it difficult to properly monitor or service. The vehicle is in my possession and available for inspection upon request. Due to the unpredictable and unsafe driving behavior, I have stopped driving the vehicle altogether and have not driven it in over a month. The car hesitates when shifting, especially at stop signs or when merging into traffic, creating serious safety concerns for myself and others. The issue has been reproduced multiple times and addressed at the CarMax dealership in Tinley Park, IL, where I bought the car. However, their repairs were only temporary, and the problem returned. Because the car is now outside of their warranty period, they refuse to inspect it without charging a diagnostic fee. I also contacted Ford Customer Service, but was told that since there is no current recall, I would need to pay out of pocket and that no assistance could be offered. There were no warning lights or messages at the start of the issue, which began within 60–90 days of ownership. The transmission symptoms have been present ever since, and have progressively worsened. This is clearly part of a wider tran
The vehicle shutters and fails to engage while taking off from a stop. The transmission feels like the clutch slips (Automatic transmission). This 2016 Ford Focus is having the exact same issues as mentioned in the Ford customer satisfaction program 14M02 -Supplement #7. In this memo Ford outlines that 2012-2016 Ford Focus models with the DPS6 automatic transmission built between August 1st 2010 - November 5th 2015 in Michigan can get repairs made. I contacted Ford and they are saying they will not honor repairing the vehicle since it isn't showing the recall attached to it specifically even though they acknowledge the issues exist in my vehicle. On the 14M02 recall supplemental #7 the Fords with that transmission have received additional extended warranties to 10yrs 150,000 miles. My car has 132,000 miles and is 9 years old. I had this same issue fixed prior while the vehicle was still under the original factory warranty. I need assistance since Ford is failing to make the appropriate repairs to a vehicle they have acknowledged has problems from a bad designed transmission. These 2012-2016 cars are LEMONS!! PLEASE HELP!

Check engine light illuminated followed by unresponsive throttle. Pulled over and the car immediately stalled. Would not restart. Came back with code P1450. There's an open recall for that exact code for 2015-2018 focus, however the 1.0L supposedly "not affected" so my vehicle is not eligible.
Notes from the Ford dealer: Oil pump belt tensioner failed causing oil pump belt to slip and starve engine for oil. Turbo was also starved of oil. Long block and turbo were replaced. Transmission shuddering, slipping
I’m having a very difficult time with ford dealership there is a lot of information about this 2016 ford focus automatic transmission that has problems with either its dry clutch or the tcm transmission control module. It is revving high when you stop it doesn’t shift gears properly it jerks hard it won’t go into higher gears it will start reversing out of no were that’s a very very terrifying situation especially that me and my fiancé have a little boy in this vehicle. We were so happy to buy this vehicle and ended up having huge problems for only having 100k miles on the odometer. This is are only vehicle spent are taxes on this vehicle to get us around for a few years go on vacations all that. To call ford and be told basically if this vehicle wasn’t involved in the lawsuit against ford about this certain situation then it wouldn’t be included in the recall. I think I should file a lawsuit against ford for this why would they have on the web that every 2016 ford focus has a recall for the tcm transmission control module one time free replacement until June 2025 it says. I want something done this is not right and illegal. Organization at its finest.

Battery was disconnected in order to install new radio. After installation, car started just fine but could not go faster than 20mph and would "stall" (even though it is auto transmission) once getting up to that speed. Ford dealership diagnosed as needing a new transmission control module. I was also told this problem would have occurred whenever the battery died, so it was no fault on the radio installation. There is a recall on these parts but for some reason my vehicle is not included in any warranties or recalls. I do not have any written communication with the Ford dealership yet as all contact has been via phone calls.

My clutch and or transmission is malfunctioning. When I drive up hill the car shudders and I lose power, it's a risk when another vehicle or pedestrian is behind me. When I accelerate from a full stop, same symptoms. If in an emergency I have to move I would be at risk because then the vehicle would hesitate. The issue was confirmed with the manufacturer's dealership service center. No warning lamps, no messages just a sudden appearance of the symptoms that were progressively getting worse. I looked up two separate customer satisfaction programs which I believe I should be eligible but bought the vehicle after their expiration and even though I think the vehicle satisfies the programs' terms, the manufacturer did not include my vehicle's vin.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
