Vehicle caught fire on February 29, 2024, with family members inside the vehicle. The fire appeared to start under the hood on the right passenger side, which would directly correlate with the current open recall. The family had just made a trip back from a basketball game and was dropping off a passenger when smoke was noticed. Upon further inspection, there was an active fire under the hood, which soon erupted into a burst of flames, causing the vehicle to be declared a total loss. Emergency responders had to be called to the scene to alleviate the fire. The fire report depicts a vehicle malfunction as the cause of the ignition. Ford has made no efforts to contact the consumer regarding the fire and subsequent damage.

When driving down the road and it does not matter what speed I am going, is when this issue is happening to most. I will be driving and out of the blue the tachometer will just drop to zero (0) and I lose all power and the vehicle starts shaking vigorously back and forth until it decides what gear the transmission wants to be in. It is doing this every single day, and it almost made me wrecked the other day. I do not even have 70,000 miles and it will be three years old in April 2024. I have called Ford and reported the issue as well. I have researched the issues, and many other Expeditions are having the same issue years 2020-2022. I am asking for Ford to take a serious look at all the car crashes from this exact issue. I do know the F150 are recalled with the exact transmission that is in the Expeditions. The transmission on Thursday 2-22-24 after driving and parked, put the car in drive then it did not want to get out of parked and do into drive or reverse.

I arrived home, parked the car, exited the vehicle and walked to the back to retrieve my bag. I opened the hatch and when I reached in I had the feeling that the car slightly moved but I thought because of the falling snow it was an optical illusion, but then it really started to move... thankfully I was able to get to snow covered grass and not slip and fall behind my vehicle. it then proceeded to roll all the way down to the street. It was all captured on my ring camera but I am unable to upload the video?

The transmission is a major issue. I have had it in the shop 3 or 4 times now and still experiencing issues. The vehicle goes in and out of gear, doesn’t always accelerate when giving it gas, jerks when slowing down/downshifting. Makes a loud noise during downshifting at times, and the list goes on. Ford knows there are problems and refuses to address the issue, applies a computer update to bandaid the issue, and sends customers on their way to only be faced with the issue a short time later.

I own the 2020 Expedition. We were traveling on Interstate 287 yesterday. I was in the right lane and was stuck behind a slow moving semi-truck. I put on my blinker and waited for an opening in traffic to move into the middle lane. When an opening presented itself, I pressed down on the gas pedal to accelerate into traffic. While the truck should have down shifted and accelerated, instead the powertrain completely disengaged; a total loss of power. The RPM jumped way up to redline, over revving, but the truck was slowing down. I took my foot of the gas pedal and as the RPM came back down, the transmission slammed back into engagement with a loud audible clunk that jolted the whole vehicle. At this point, I was finally able to accelerate. While this was all happening, I had just moved into the middle lane of traffic, which was bearing down on us. All the vehicles behind us were slamming their brakes and honking their horns. I thought for sure we were going to die. Thank God it wasn’t an 80,000 lbs Peterbilt bearing down on us, or we would be dead, by the grace of God we’re not. Upon returning home I went onto the Ford truck owners website I belonged to. I came to learn this is a known issue with Ford’s 10-speed transmission that Ford has failed to address. That there are pending lawsuits and that the NHTSA is aware of the issue. One of the member suggested that I file a complaint with the NHTSA, that was my impetus for writing you today. This is a dangerous condition that Ford

On about 4 to 5 occasions while driving on the highway, the car sort of stalls and a loss of control happens where everything feels locked up for a few seconds and a big thump is heard. It feels like the transmission has completely dropped out or that I have been hit but I have not been hit, it’s just the jerking motion I was feeling. It has happened both when excelerating to change lanes and also when promptly slowing to avoid someone coming into my lane. It is a really scary situation and when I looked it up, apparently has been documented on recent earlier models of the car but not in my newer 2021 year. This issue is still happening with the newer model and needs to be looked into. The dealership confirmed and said the transmission needs to be replaced. There are only arousn 26K miles on the car, it started happening around 20K miles.

After owning the car a year and about 15,000 miles I started having transmission rough shifting and lurching motions when shifting - violent lurching. I took it in to the dealership and they reset the adaptive learning component for the transmission. Nothing changed. Brought it in again and drove with technician and was able to reproduce issue. They replaced the transmission and the problems continued and actually increased with losing all acceleration on the freeway (floppy pedal) and then completely losing 10th gear when trying to pass another car. Luckily I was able to pull over and I did not cause an accident. It also threw a code/warning light at that time. I took it back to the dealership. They assessed and reset adaptive driving module. It then lost accelleration and wouldn't engage 10th and started smoking. Took it back to dealership and they claimed all that was due to over full transmission fluid. Original problems of rough shifting, lurching, clunking still existed. I filed a report with Ford and got a case number with the concern department. This resulted in the rear end of the car being replaced??? Car still has transmission issues, with all the above mentioned issues, and now delayed acceleration in the lower gears. Enough is enough fighting about fixing it for a year, it has been in for repairs 7 times, and over 49 days of rental cars . I do not feel Ford is taking recall 22S36 seriously. In 2022 they began claiming that parts would be available late summer of 2022. I have scheduled and brought my vehicle in at least three times to have this recall performed only to arrive and they didn't have parts. So now for several months I've started calling to check on parts. The first response is always "We can do that recall" but then after asking about parts to make sure I'm told that parts aren't actually available and that they are on back order and expected in two weeks. Ford is providing no means to schedule this recall service by putting customers on a wait list, ordering parts specifically for a VIN, or otherwise setting parts a aside specifically for customers actively trying to get the repair done. Today is day 462 since this recall, almost as many days as dollars they've spent on the handout. I hope the NHSTA takes a hard look at Ford's obligation to resolve recall 22S36 and at their inaction and insincere practice at doing so.

On numerous occasions, when traveling at speeds 50mph and over, the vehicle failed to further accelerate when the gas pedal was engaged. This caused the rpm's to rev up to 7 and the vehicle to slow down. Our safety was at risk because the vehicle was unresponsive to acceleration for at least 20-30 seconds making it impossible to avoid or get away from something dangerous. On one occasion, the vehicle made an alarming grinding sound. I have not yet taken the vehicle to a service center for inspection of this problem. There were not any warning lamps, messages, etc prior to the failure.

On April 14, 2022, a recall was issued for the wiper blade arms for my Ford Expedition. Unfortunately, I did not receive a notice until June of that year, due to a separate recall concerning potential under the hood fire risks. In September 2022, my vehicle was brought in for both recall repairs, but there was a supply shortage of wiper blades, rendering any immediate resolution impossible. Despite subsequent visits for regular check-ups, the wiper blade shortage persisted. On two different occasions (Jan & March 2023) my wiper blades did not work properly. After the wiper blades moved back and forth to clear my window, they got stuck at an angle and completely obstructed my view. I went to my local dealership to temporarily correct the issue. Fast forward to July 2023, and the eagerly awaited wiper blades have finally arrived. However, installing them has revealed a new problem: the blades do not fully retract. Although the wiper motor itself functions correctly, this issue stems from a combination of programming and quality concerns. It appears that a small part within the wiper blade, which prompted the recall, has led the motor to adapt to functioning without that part. Consequently, when the new recall blades are fitted, they do not retract properly, obstructing my view. Upon identifying the problem, the manager at my Ford Dealership promptly reported the issue to Ford, requesting coverage for the cost of a new motor to align with the recall blades. Despite their efforts

The 10R80 transmission, even after rebuilt by the dealership continues to shift in unexpected ways (hard shifts, not picking the right gear, hesitation under acceleration). It doesn't happen all the time, and isn't reproduceable at will. When the problem occurs, it is very noticeable. The vehicle will hesitate and not accelerate when pushing on the gas pedal, and then all of a sudden jump forward unexpectedly. The dealership has examined it after the transmission was rebuilt, and states that it is operating normally, but we were unable to duplicate the problem at that time. The next day, it happened again while driving on the highway when merging into traffic. Pressed on the gas pedal, but the car did not accelerate as expected (long hesitation), and then the transmission decided to change gears, and experienced hard shifts to the point the whole car jerks abruptly (this was NOT because of extreme pressing of the gas pedal). Just normal pressure on the gas pedal, and it will randomly decide how it will shift.

10-Speed transmission frequently shifts hard, and sometimes misses a shift entirely resulting in no power for a few seconds while the transmission tries to "find" the right gear. This has occurred in busy intersections which obviously presents a major safety risk. Awkward shifting started about 2 months ago, complete loss of power has occurred 3 times in that time period. Vehicle is currently sitting in a Ford dealership service department awaiting diagnoses and repair since 5/29/23.

Daily the automatic transmission will erratically and forcefully downshift at highway speed. When changing Driving Modes the transmission display on the dash has numbers disappear and the transmission downshifts with great force which has lead to injuries. After sitting for more than a few hours the transmission will not go into reverse at first but will then violently shift into reverse after several minutes. These issues began not long after we purchased this vehicle new. The service manager at the dealership the vehicle was purchased from when I told him about these problems told me that I don’t understand how a 10 speed transmission works. Rented the vehicle from Action Car Rental in Orlando FL. on Nov 7, 2022. The following evening we noticed some drips coming from the reading light assembly on the roof between the driver and passenger seats (there is no sunroof). We contacted the facility and left messages - no return calls - we contacted the parent company NU Car Rental and did not get anyone on the phone after calling back multiple times. There was a hurricane/tropical storm approaching between 11/9 am-11/10 am and when I finally got ahold of someone during the storm shutdowns; I then notified them of the water intrusion. They said I can return the vehicle to the security guard after the storm passes but cannot guarantee they will have a replacement car for me and to rent elsewhere if I had to. We just purchased this vehicle and started to notice a hard down shift when slowing down from 6th gear. I drove it Saturday January 21st and when I shifted the vehicle into reverse to back into a parking space it threw the transmission into a fault and had no reverse. Still drove forward. Took the vehicle in for service on 1/25/23. They ordered parts to fix the harsh shift. No comment on the reverse issue. Picked up vehicle evening of 1/25/23. Drove from dealership to gas station close to home, about 15 miles. Shut vehicle off to fuel. When I restarted the vehicle it kept pushing forward against trans pawl and then rolling back repeatedly. After it did this 10 times or so I put the vehicle in Nuetral and it proceeded to drive forward for 20-30 feet uphill. After 20-30 feet of driving forward the wrench light turned on and the vehicle stopped driving forward and rolled backwards down the hill as it should have. After this the vehicle had forward gears but no reverse gears. Wrench light and CEL light both illuminated when driving home from gas station. Will have dealership tow back 1/26/23 due to safety issue of vehicle driving forward while not in gear.

Front differential failed. I was driving to the mountains and when I reached snow level it was about 38 degrees F and I slowed to less than 20 mph and switched to 4A. Within a few moments I heard and felt a grinding sound from the front. I have used 4WD several times over the year or so I've had the vehicle and have never heard this noise before. I bought this vehicle specfically for its 4wd and my family's life depends on it working when we are up in the Sierras where it snows 2-3 inches per hour. My intake manifold has been experiencing corrosion. I took it to the dealership for inspection. They said they couldn't determine what was causing it but confirmed it was a process of corrosion. After my own investigation, I have realized there is a design flaw in the gutter area where the bottom of the windshield meets the hood. When it rains or when I get a car wash, the fluid/water is channeled toward the center of the windshield and drains onto the intake manifold and other various surrounding engine parts underneath the hood. I have never seen this happen in other cars. It's a bad design that will eventually corrode the engine. Furthermore, it may be affecting some electrical components under the hood near the intake manifold. This is bad. Please look at the design on the 2021 Ford Expedition XLT. Not sure if this is how they have designed it on other model years, etc. It's a real problem that will cause some serious problems of the engine down the road.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The transmission slams down into gear from 9th to 8th gear. It also slams in stop and go traffic from 4-5, 5-6. It is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The transmission jerks hard enough to move you in your seat and could cause accidental breaking or acceleration. In stop and go traffic it could cause you to rear-end someone because it lags shifting. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It has been back to the dealer 4 times for this issue. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, there are not warning messages. It has done this since 17,000 miles.

I have just found out that my pre-collision assist system has never worked in my vehicle since the day I purchased it brand new from the Ford dealership. My vehicle is 1 1/2 years old now and I never knew I had this function. Recently, I got a chip in the center of my windshield and I got it fixed. I asked how much a new windshield was and I was told a price and to make sure I get OEM glass and to have the camera in the front where the rearview mirror is calibrated correctly so the pre-collision assist will work correctly. I was somewhat confused and was like ok. I searched for the settings in my vehicle and sure enough there is a pre-collision setting which has been ON since who knows when because I never touched that setting before. Well, it has never worked because I have had countless encounters with vehicles and pedestrians cutting me off right in front of me while in operation. This is not good. And I read that 2020 Ford Expeditions have been recalled because of this. I believe it's happening to 2021 models as well. I expect to take my vehicle in for service ASAP.
