2010 BMW R1200 GS

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2009-2011 K1300 (S, GT), 2010-2011 S1000 RR, 2005-2011 R1200 (GS, GS Adventure, R, RT, S, ST), 2006-2010 HP2 (Enduro, Megamoto, Sport), 2005-2008 K1200 (R, R Sport, S, GT), and 2012 K1600 (GT, GTL) motorcycles that were repaired under recall 13V-617 with the support ring remedy and where the fuel pump was not replaced at a later date. This recall involves the fuel pump, and also the auxiliary fuel pump as applicable. The affected motorcycles have a fuel pump flange that may crack, possibly resulting in a fuel leak while the engine is running.

Risk. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump(s) with an improved version, free of charge. The recall began January 18, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain accessory turn signals manufactured for 2006-2017 R1200GS, 2007-2008 and 2010-2017 R1200GS Adventure, 2017 F700GS and F800GS, 2013-2017 F800GT, 2015-2016 F800R, 2014-2017 F800GS Adventure, 2014-2016 S1000R, 2015-2017 R1200R, 2016-2017 R1200RS, and 2010-2017 S1000RR motorcycles. As designed, these accessory turn signals may be insufficiently visible to other drivers, and, as such, fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk. If other drivers cannot easily see the turn signals, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the turn signals, free of charge. The recall began October 25, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 R1200GS and R1200RT, 2006-2010 R1200GS Adventure, 2007-2010 R1200R, 2007 R1200S and K1200R Sport, 2005-2007 R1200ST, 2008-2009 HP2 Megamoto, 2006 HP2 Enduro, 2008-2010 HP2 Sport, 2005-2008 K1200S, 2006-2008 K1200R, K1200GT, 2009-2011 K1300S, 2010-2011 K1300R, and 2009-2010 K1300GT motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the rear wheel mounting flange may crack if the rear wheel mounting bolts are over tightened.

Risk. If the rear wheel mounting flange cracks, the mounting bolts may loosen and the rear wheel may not remain secured to the motorcycle, causing a loss of stability and increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel one, free of charge. The recall began on May 7, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 model year R-model motorcycles, model year 2005-2012 K-model motorcycles, model year 2010-2011 S 1000 model motorcycles, and model year 2006-2010 HP2 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the fuel pump flange (and the auxiliary fuel pump flange if equipped) could develop cracks and leak fuel.

Risk. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will either reinforce the fuel pump flange or replace the pump, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 16, 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

The contact owns a 2010 BMW R-1200 GS. The contact stated that the motorcycle failed to start-up. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 20V471000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact was referred to the dealer however, there was no dealer within a 50-mile radius. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW R 1200 GS MOTORCYCLE. WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE FUEL PUMP SPRAYED FUEL ONTO THE DRIVER AND VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ALAMO BMW MOTORCYCLES (25600 I-10, BOERNE, TX 78006, (210) 828-5513) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V617000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.

BMW R1200GS 2010 MOTORCYCLE PART ON THROTTLE BODY WHERE THE THROTTLE CABLE ATTACHES TO THE THROTTLE BODY KEEPS ON CRACKING. IT IS A PLASTIC PART WHEN ALL PREVIOUS MODELS WERE METAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES ON MY BIKE SO FAR. THE INDIVIDUAL PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE TOTAL THROTTLE BODY $546 + $400 LABOR. THERE IS ALSO THE DANGER OF THE THROTTLE JAMMING WHILE IN OPERATION DUE TO THESE CRACKED AND BROKEN LOOSE PARTS. I WAS IN MOTION AND FELT THROTTLE STICK AND THEN RELEASE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TIMES WHILE I WAS IN THE HOV LANE ON THE FREEWAY. I HAVE REPAIR DOCUMENTATION ON FILE FOR ALL 3 REPLACED THROTTLE BODIES BUT DON'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO SCAN THEM. IF YOU NEED COPIES PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL GET THEM SCANNED AT KINKOS AND SEND THEM TO YOU. THIS HAPPENED IN MAY AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE LACK OF RESPONSE BMW HAS TO THIS ISSUE WHICH IS A MATERIAL DESIGN FLAW THAT COULD END UP HURTING A MOTORCYCLIST IF THE THROTTLE JAMS AT SPEED. I SEE FROM DIFFERENT WEB SITES THAT THIS IS HAPPENING ON DIFFERENT BMW MODELS WITH THE SAME THROTTLE BODY. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE MILEAGE IS ABOVE 40,000 MILES. PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED ON WHAT THE SITUATION IS WITH THIS SINCE I AM WORRIED AND DON'T TRUST MY MOTORCYCLE NOW. I AM AN OLDER RIDER (75YRS) NOT SOME HOT SHOT THAT ABUSES MY MOTORCYCLE. I HAVE BEEN RIDING FOR OVER 45 YEARS AND THIS IS MY 4TH BMW. I DID TALK TO THE BMW REP WHO WAS AT MY LOCAL DEALER BUT TO NO AVAIL. ANY OTHER INFORMATION YOU NEED OR ANYWAY I

THE DROP DOWN MENU ABOVE FOR AFFECTED PARTS WAS NOT WORKING WITH MY COMPUTER. THE AFFECTED PART IS THE TRANSMISSION/SHIFTING. THE VEHICLE MENU DID NOT SHOW MY YEAR OF MOTORCYCLE, WHICH IS 2011. I SELECTED 2010 AS THE NEXT CLOSEST OPTION. SINCE I PURCHASED THE BIKE IT WILL ON OCCASION POP OUT OF 6TH GEAR ON THE HIGHWAY. THERE IS A FALSE NEUTRAL BETWEEN 5TH AND 6TH GEAR. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER UNDER WARRANTY ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THEY INDICATED THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPLICATED SO THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT. THIS ISSUE IS DOCUMENTED ONLINE THAT OTHER BMW MOTORCYCLES HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR FREQUENTLY, BUT IS NOT SAFE WHEN IT GOES INTO NEUTRAL AT AROUND 60 MPH. IT HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN SEPTEMBER 2014 AND IT NEARLY CAUSED ME TO CRASH WITH A CAR BEHIND ME WHEN THE BIKE WENT INTO NEUTRAL. I BROUGHT IT TO ANOTHER DEALER AND HAVE REACHED OUT TO BMW OF NORTH AMERICA. BMW NA IS REFUSING TO FIX THE ISSUE. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN AND I APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN OFFER. *TR

THE MOTORCYCLE RAN OUT OF FUEL WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CROSS A BUSY INTERSECTION INVOLVING A SMALL SIDE ROAD AND A DIVIDED 4 LANE ROAD. *TR

WHILE RIDING AT 25MPH, WITH A ONE-THIRD FULL TANK OF FUEL, THE FUEL WARNING AND CAUTION WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED AND THE FUEL QUANTITY INDICATOR BECAME INOPERATIVE. THE TANK WAS FILLED IMMEDIATELY AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THERE NOW IS NO RELIABLE WAY TO JUDGE REMAINING FUEL ON-BOARD. *TR

FUEL STRIP FAILED. REPLACED AGAIN IN 6/2012. FAILURE RESULTS IN FALSE GAUGE READING WHICH CAN LEAD TO RUNNING OUT OF FUEL AT SPEED IN TRAFFIC. *TR
