Defect. Wabash National Corporation (Wabash) is recalling certain 2024-2025 RFCVHSC refrigerated van trailers. The base rails may not be bonded properly and can detach, reducing the structural strength of the trailer.

Risk. Base rails that detach can cause cargo to shift or fall, resulting in a loss of trailer control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Dealers will install an additional attachment plate, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 12, 2024. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404.

Defect. Wabash National Corporation (Wabash) is recalling certain 2009-2024 dry van trailers equipped with a rail-style lift gate. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. The location of the rear impact guard is too far forward from the rear of the trailer, reducing impact protection. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 224, "Rear Impact Protection."

Risk. In the event of a rear impact crash, the rear impact guard may not sufficiently protect light duty vehicles, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy. Dealers will add an extension to the rear impact guard, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404. Wabash's number for this recall is B23015.

The WABCO EBS Trailer Modulator (Part No. 4801070010), a 12-volt RSC valve installed on dry van trailers, intermittently retains residual pneumatic pressure in one delivery port without any active brake command. This causes a single wheel-end brake chamber to remain partially applied during highway operation, creating a sustained brake drag condition that is completely invisible to the driver — no warning lamps, no fault codes, no dash alerts, no detectable cab vibration or smell during early heat buildup. Over the course of normal highway operation, frictional heat accumulates at the affected wheel end beyond the thermal capacity of the drum and brake shoe assembly. The result is brake-shoe ignition and a trailer fire at highway speed, with no opportunity for the driver to detect or respond before flames are established. To date, 17 trailer fires have been reported as a result of this defect, resulting in loss of the trailer unit and sometimes full cargo. Approximately 1,200 trailers are believed to be equipped with this valve. All affected trailers have exhibited excessive brake wear consistent with chronic brake drag caused by the same pressure retention fault. Separate incidents have also resulted in severe wheel-end overheating, destroyed brake drums, seized components, and damage to axle hardware without progressing to a full fire. Third-party brake timing tests confirmed the anomalous pressure retention is isolated to the valve delivery port — not downstream brake hard

Reading this record

No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
