NHTSA campaign 23V646000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Wabash National Corporation: Structure › Body

Wabash National Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 20, 2023 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3,711. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Wabash National Corporation (Wabash) is recalling certain 2009-2024 dry van trailers equipped with a rail-style lift gate. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. The location of the rear impact guard is too far forward from the rear of the trailer, reducing impact protection. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 224, "Rear Impact Protection."

The risk

In the event of a rear impact crash, the rear impact guard may not sufficiently protect light duty vehicles, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy

Dealers will add an extension to the rear impact guard, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404. Wabash's number for this recall is B23015.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 23V646000.
