My vehicle has 125,000 miles. it runs and drives and its like new inside and out. The problem is ,the whole bottom side and frame is rusted out like if it was a 50 year old car. Tacoma have a recall for this Nd fj cruisers have the same frame as tacoma.
2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2007 record →
Per mechanic who put a new muffler on said the frame is so rusted it wouldn’t pass inspection!
Took the vehicle in for maintenance at a service center. The mechanic expressed his concern with the amount of rust on the frame on the passenger side and told me that it will soon be a safety concern. He showed me by pulling chunks off of frame with his fingers. The vehicle now sits in the garage.
FJ Cruiser in Tennessee Was filling up gas tank and heard a noise under the car. I looked and noticed that the back of the gas tank was hanging down. After I got it home, I discovered that the rear fuel strap had broken due to rust. The front fuel strap was also extremely rusted and probably would have failed also
Structural Frame Rust making vehicle unsafe to drive. Gas tank straps rusted completely through as well.
Undercarriage of vehicle was not properly rust coated by manufacturer. Undercarriage is so rusted that my mechanic advised it may need a new frame.
Frame rust all over, going to cost tons of money to fix. Rust rotting through the frame of the car. Shouldn’t be a problem dont live near water or salt area.
My recently purchased Toyota FJ Cruiser was found to have severe rust underneath the car . Nuts and bolts have rotted away with the part now held together by rust weld. New straps are holding up a dented gas tank which my mechanic thinks fell when the original straps failed. Is it a safety issue when a gas tank falls off a traveling vehicle? I don’t know what other problems may arise from this, but I have been online and there seems to be complaints of this nature all over the internet. Toyota ordered a recall on several models for this problem, but not the FJ. This many people can’t be making this stuff up. At some point it is going to lead to a death, if it hasn’t already . Have only had this vehicle 2 weeks, and I find it hard to believe Toyota can’t address this problem like it did with other models of their fleet. One lady’s pickup bed almost separated from the front of the truck. Please use whatever tools you have to see that Toyota does the right thing, and takes care of the customers who are driving their vehicles.
Loss of brakes while driving. Brakes locking up. Complete frame rust
Frame is failing and fully corroded/compromised. Combination of very poor steel Toyota used in manufacturing (during these model years) combined with Toyota’s placement of air conditioning condensation drain above frame on passenger side has resulted in a corroded and corrupted frame with dangerous and deadly loss of structural integrity.
Rusted frame. The factory trailer hitch failed because of frame rot and dropped a travel trailer to the ground while towing. Luckily it did not cause an accident and I was able to get another vehicle to tow the travel trailer. I am part of a Facebook group for FJ Cruiser rusted frame owners. This is a common problem on FJ Cruisers and should have been a recall as Toyota did for similar vehicles of the same years that had the same rusted frame issues.
The frame on my 2007 FJ cruiser is rusting very badly. There are large holes in my frame and I have had one of my rear sway bars rust all the way off. I feel like at any moment my car could just fall apart and cause me to wreck.
Excessive corrosion on frame.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated upon inspection, the mechanic discovered that severe corrosion had formed on the entire undercarriage of the vehicle. Prior to the discovery, the contact stated that an unknown part had separated and detached from the vehicle in his driveway due to the corrosion. The dealer then took several pictures of the corrosion on the vehicle. The contact was warned by the dealer to not drive off road or use the vehicle to tow due to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. Vin was not available.
The back portion of the frame is completely rusted out, has a rot hole, and cracked. It is the same problem that has been happening to similar year model Tacomas, Sequoias, and Tundras. The FJ cruiser now needs to be included in this recall for rusty frame issues. I'm not even in a rust belt state. I'm in Florida. A rear end accident could cause the whole vehicle to collapse and make kill passengers in the back seats. Tons of other complaints filed here. There's a facebook group "FJ Cruiser Rusted Frame Owners Unite". Vehicle has been inspected by insurance for repairs, may just get totaled out as of this writing. No warning symbols or lights.
Frame rust and fuel tank strap rust
Recently purchased used from dealership. Excessive rust on lower frame and other components (transmission and power steering lines) as well as suspension. This is not a flood vehicle. Initially took it to Toyota for repairs of the lines and trans. The quote was too high, so I took it to local shops for repair. The local shops were surprised by the amount of rust. Trans was fixed but the shops refused to fix other components that attached to the frame because they fear they will cause more damage. Visited several FJ Cruiser forums and frame rust issues are incredibly common with the FJ, to the point where there are class action lawsuits. Toyota needs to step up and fix this issue for FJ owners!
Excessive rust on frame components from inside frame rails. Failure of suspension mounting points at the rear axel. Failure of the rear cross member and hitch due all due to excess rust.
Frame structural rust/ fuel tank strap rust On going problem with this one and many others
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated that upon taking her vehicle to an independent mechanic for an oil change, the contact was informed that the undercarriage was severely corroded. Due to corrosion, the contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to replace the gas tank trunk strap. The mechanic informed him that the undercarriage of the vehicle was extremely corroded and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The local dealer was contacted about the failure and he was informed over the phone that the entire sub-frame of the vehicle needed to be replaced out of pocket. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,875.
Our 2007n Toyota FJ only has 135, 000 miles on it and runs well. We love the vehicle and have a severely rusted out frame. the truck has been adequately maintained but is now unsafe to drive. There are several large areas of rusted frame that are gone, motor mounts have fallen off the frame, the rear axle is barely hanging on because the rear frame is brittle. on the passenger side almost 3 feet of frame is gone from the underside of the vehicle. There is very little metal left to weld to making repairs not possible. Toyota Corperate refuses to assist us and we are stuck with a vehicle that is near total failure.
RUST! Frame rust!
Rear cross member rusted completely through to the point of almost ripping off during towing. The remainder of the frame has excessive rust/corrosion that is not present on other vehicles of the same year.
Due to rust on my 2007 FJ Cruiser, I've had many unexpected expenses. I first was losing brake pressure and my brake lines had to be replaced after breaking when in a mechanic's shop. I've also replaced all four calipers, all the rusted pulleys on the engine, lower control arms that were so rusted that they had to be cut out, and hub assemblies for both front wheels. The hub assembly lead to a failed vehicle inspection for safety concerns. The exhaust pipe literally broke apart near the rear frame crossmember and was sitting on it, so had to be replaced. The exhaust manifold rusted apart and separated from the engine block, leading to dangerous fumes in the engine bay and horrible gas mileage. The O2 sensors were rusted in place and giving poor readings and had to be replaced. Turning the steering wheel became difficult and that was due to being extremely rusty, so it had to be replaced. Shifter cable and PRNDL switch had to be replaced due to not shifting into drive or lower gears. The front differential drain plug was so rusted that the dealership would not attempt to remove it. Now there are holes rusted through the body mount brackets, as well as the passenger side floor. The cargo area's floor where the charcoal EVAP canister connects to the vehicle has completely rusted through, and one of the subframe brackets rusted so badly that it was taken off by hand. Both subframe brackets need to be replaced. The rear control arm mounts are very thin due to extreme rust. My mech
Extreme frame rust
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated that the rear sub-frame was extremely corroded. The contact also stated the ABS warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the sub-frame to be replaced. The mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure with the ABS warning light illumination. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 204,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated while receiving an oil change, the contact noticed rusting to the undercarriage and the sub frame. The rust had caused the driver’s side rear axle bracket to fracture. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 156,350
Frame has very premature rust issues. Structure of the vehicle is comprised due to well known issue of poor frame coating during manufacture of vehicle.
FUEL TANK STRAP RUSTED THROUGH, ALMOST LOST MY FUEL TANK. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED IT AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE FRAME IS HAS ALSO DEVELOPED RUST ISSUES.
MY VEHICLES FRAME/ SUSPENSION HAS DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THE TOYOTA DEALER WONT PASS IT FOR SAFETY INSPECTION. THE FRAME AND SUSPENSION HAVE DISINTEGRATED. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT SINCE NEW AND IS IN OTHERWISE PERFECT CONDITION.
THE FRAME HAS RUSTED OUT BASED ON RECENT INSPECTION AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. IT POSES A SAFETY CONCERN.
FRAME IS ROTTING AWAY AND STRUCTURAL SUPPORT IS NO LONGER THERE.
FRAME HAS SEVERE STRUCTURAL ROT AT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNT AND LEFT AND RIGHT UPPER CONTROL ARM MOUNTS AT THE FRAME. AND ADDITIONAL FRAME RUST IS THE REAR AXLE HOUSING HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT OF WEEPING OIL. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TOLD WHEN I HAD IT LOOKED AT. THIS FJ IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AT THIS POINT. IT WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT, THE FRAME IS JUST RUSTING AT AN ALARMING RATE COMPARED TO OTHER TOYOTAS I HAVE OWNED.
SEVERE FRAME RUST! I POKED MY FINGER THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE FRAME THIS MORNING. MOST ALL SCREWS, MOUNTING BRACKETS ETC ARE ALL RUSTED. OTHER COMPONENTS LIKE THE REAR DIFF, OIL PAN ETC ARE ALL COVERED IN RUST
FUEL TANK STRAPS RUSTED, AS WELL AS MULTIPLE AREAS IN FRAME RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. ONCE VEHICLE WAS PUT ON A LIFT, MECHANIC SAID GAS TANK STRAPS NEEDED REPLACED AS WELL AS SOME REPAIR TO THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE FRAME.
I PURCHASED AN AUXILLARY GAS TANK ONLINE FROM A COMPANY CALLED 'TITAN FUEL TANKS' FOR MY 2007 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER. WEBSITE: HTTPS://TITANFUELTANKS.COM/CATALOG/PRODUCT/VIEW/ID/78/S/TITAN-TRAIL-TREKKER-II-4040387/CATEGORY/2/ I'M A BIT CONCERNED THAT THE PRODUCT MAY BE A SAFETY HAZARD. THEIR WEBSITE SAYS: "SOME LIGHT FABRICATION MAY BE NEEDED ON STOCK/OE CARRIERS FOR FITMENT OF TANK"FOR ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS. I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT A "LIGHT FABRICATION" SOLUTION. I FELT (& MY BROTHER FELT) THAT TO CUT OUT SOME OF THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE CARRIER IN ORDER TO MAKE THE PRODUCT WORK (THE COMPANY'S SOLUTION) WOULD LEAVE THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT. I HAD TO GO TO A LOCAL WELDER AND HAD A NEW SPARE TIRE CARRIER BUILT. TO HAVE TO DO THIS WAS MUCH MORE THAN 'LIGHT FABRICATION' AS STATED IN THE AD. THEIR SITE SAYS 'IT FITS THE STOCK SPARE TIRE CARRIERS (SOME MODIFICATIONS MAYBE REQUIRED) AND MOST OF THE POPULAR AFTERMARKET TIRE CARRIERS, THE TANK COMES WITH ALL OF THE HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL BRACKETRY, FASTENERS, AND ACCESSORIES FOR EASY MOUNTING ON YOUR OFF-ROAD RIG.' THIS WAS NOT MY EXPERIENCE AT ALL. 'EASY MOUNTING!' WHAT A JOKE. NOTE THAT THE IMAGES ON THEIR WEBSITE SHOWED THEIR PRODUCT SITTING SNUGLY BEHIND THE SPARE TIRE. MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE WAS SHOWN AS BEING ABLE TO HAVE THE PRODUCT ATTACHED TO IT. *SEE JPG IMAGES: WEBSITE AD.JPG, IMG_E6603, IMG_E6604. I'M A BIT CONCERNED THAT THE PRODUCT MAY BE A SAFETY HAZARD. AFTER MOUNTING AT THE DISTANCE THE SPARE TIRE WOULD NORMALLY
SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2006 IT HAS BEEN RUSTING AND AN ALARMING RATE. EVEN MY MECHANIC SAYS HE'S NEVER SEEN A NEW CAR RUST THAT QUICKLY. THE FRAME IS COVERED I RUST, I TRIED TO STOP IT BUT IT DIDN'T WORK.
NEW CAR RUSTED VERY QUICKLY. FUEL TANK STRAPS RUSTING ALSO.
2007 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER HAS THE SAME ROT PROBLEMS AS THE TACOMA AND SEQUOIA...THERE ARE REPORTS ALL OVER THE USA AND TOYOTA HAS STILL NOT ISSUED A RECALL ON ROTTING FRAMES.I CAN'T EVEN HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED IT IS SO DECOMPOSED. I AM FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE BEEN KILLED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY WANT ME TO CALL THEM? HOW ABOUT KEEPING THIS INFORMATION IN WRITING MAYBE FOR A FUTURE LAWSUIT.
MY 07 FJ HAS ONLY 104K MILES ON IT. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE DO TO THE UNDER BODY RUSTING AND FALLING APART. I HAVE SPEND A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY UP KEEPING MY FJ. I NOW WILL HAVE TO GET THE COMPLETE REAR AXEL AND OTHER COMPONENTS REPLACED BEFORE I CAN DRIVE IT AGAIN. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FIX THESE ISSUES. IT'S COMPLETE NEGLIGENCE THAT THIS TAKES PLACE TO SO MANY OF THESE VEHICLES. I'M JUST THANKFUL I GOT IT TO MY MECHANIC BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THE FJ WITH MY 4 1/2 & 1 1/2 YEAR OLD INSIDE. PLEASE MAKE THIS RIGHT.
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE WITH EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST OCCURRING WITHIN 4 YEARS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE. THE RUST IS SO EXCESSIVE THAT THE TOYOTA DEEMED THE CAR TOO DAMAGED TO DRIVE BECAUSE A MAJORITY OF THE FRAME WAS TOO WEEK AND, THEREFORE UNSAFE TO DRIVE
MY FRAME AND ALL COMPONENTS OF THE FRAME ARE ROOTING AWAY DUE TO RUST. THIS SUV HAS ONLY 104K ON IT. IT MAY NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE ANYMORE.
A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS DRIVING AND VEHICLE BECAME IRATIC. DISCOVERED CONTROLS ARMS BROKE FRAME OFF. UPON WELDING BACK ON FOUND OUT FRAME HASE SEVERAL LARGE HOLES AND REAR CROSSMEMBER IS ALMOST GONE.
A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS DRIVING AND VEHICLE BECAME IRATIC. DISCOVERED CONTROLS ARMS BROKE FRAME OFF. UPON WELDING BACK ON FOUND OUT FRAME HASE SEVERAL LARGE HOLES AND REAR CROSSMEMBER IS ALMOST GONE.
MY DRIVER SIDE SEATBELT DOES NOT RETRACT ON MY 2007 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER.
THE FRAME HAS RUSTED AT ALL MAJOR WELDS AND ALONG THE FRAME COMPONENTS. VERY LITTLE METAL IS LEFT TO HOLD THE REAR SUSPENSION TO THE FRAME MOUNTS OF THE CAR. A TOYOTA BUMPER HITCH FAILED WHILE DRIVING WITH A TRAILER ATTACHED BECAUSE THEREAR CROSSMEMBER RUSTED THROUGH. THE REAR GAS TANK STRAPS ALSO RUSTED THROUGH AND HAVE BEEN REPLACED. GAS TANK WAS HANGING BY ONE STRAP.
THE HEATING UNIT UNDER BOTH FRONT SEATS ARE COMING ON WITHOUT THE SWITCH ON. AFTER TUNING SWITCH ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES IT WILL GO OFF,BUT IT COMES BACK ON. ON 11/19/14 THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS VEH. RECALL #14V743000. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A COUPLE MONTHS.
I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM AN INDIVIDUAL ON DEC. 12, 2020. LESS THAN 30 DAYS AGO. I BROUGHT IT TO THE BODY SHOP TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIX THE RATTLING SOUND THAT CAME FROM WHEN I HIT A BUMP. THE CARS BODY IS IN GREAT CONDITION. THE MILEAGE WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR WAS 183,800. I ASSUMED I MAY NEED TO DO SOME WORK ON THE CAR, BUT THE BODY SHOP TOLD ME THAT THE SOUND I WAS HEARING WAS DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE THAT HAD RUSTED SO BADLY THAT THEY WHERE CLOSE TO FALLING OFF. INCLUDING THE GAS TANK. THEY TOLD ME THAT FJ CRUISERS WHERE KNOWN FOR RUSTY UNDER BOTTOMS AND THAT I WOULD BE A SAFETY RISK TO MYSELF AND OTHERS IF I DROVE THE CAR. THEY ALSO SAID THE CAR WAS BEYOND NORMAL REPAIR. I WILL ATTACHED PHOTOS THEY SENT ME. I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR 1,500 MILES AND IT IS CONSIDERED UNDRIVABLE AND UNFIXABLE. I GOT A SECOND OPINION. WITHOUT KNOWING THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST OPINION THEY CAME TO THE EXACT SAME CONCLUSION. EXCEPT THEY TOLD ME TO REACH OUT TO YOU.
WIDOW WIPERS MOTOR FAILURE THE MOTOR OR THE ASSEMBLY AND ITS BUSHINGS DON'T HAVE PROPER SEALS WHICH ALLOWS WATER INTO DESTROY THE BUSHINGS BY NOT BEINGVABLE TO RETAIN GREASE TO PREVENT PITTING AND RUST WHICH RESULTS IN WINDOW WIPER FAILURE AND A 600DOLLAR COST OF REPLACEMENT OF MOTOR AND ARMATURE ASSEMBLY WHICH IS JUST FOR PARTS AS THERE IS NO AFTER MARKET AND LABOR COULD SEND THIS MISTAKE BY TOYOTA COSTING ABOUT 1000$ WHEN SAID AND DONE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND REDESIGN AND ITS NOT JUST THE FJ MODEL ITS MANY TOYOTA VEHICLES.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
