The transmission slave cylinder on this vehicle leaks and causes multiple issues with the transmission. it is a known issue among all manual transmission owners and resulting on average 4000 dollar repair.
2019 Toyota Corolla complaints

No warning lamps, and no accident yet; however, I believe if I continue driving it without repair, it is a safety risk. The sound I can hear coming from CVT torque converter, impeller blades is getting louder the more I drive them vehicle. This was confirmed by a transmission service center (see photo) who identified a toyota recall J17/J07 (NHTSA recall campaign 18V901000), which lists the 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback with the same CVT as my vehicle. When I contacted Toyota (see screenshot), I was told I would be responsible for the repair because there's no recall associated with my vehicle VIN pertaining to CVT torque converter.
I got a “Engine Maintenance Required” warning message. I check with the dealer and upon diagnosis told me about a faulty coolant bypass valve which is a common problem for Toyota RAV4 and Corolla. The Toyota Mechanic mentioned that this should have been a recall issue. The cost to repair was unbelievable considering it will take only a short time to do. BOught the parts and will have it installed somewhere where the labor is cheaper. Since it is a common problem, the manufacturer should recall this issue, replace the faulty part and pay the cost of everything.
The coolant bypass valve failed in my car causing “engine maintenance required” message but no CEL code. Took it to the dealership where they determined failed component and replaced it. The car only had about 71,000 miles and with a engine cooling system failure it could potentially cause further damage.
The alert for the Bypass Coolant Valve came on and cost $800 to replace. As this is a common issue across multiple Toyota models, this should be a recall.
My car has warning light of the engine maintenance required and I had to change my electrical water pump when I first got the car and the dealership doesn’t cover the issues
Coolant bypass valve failed
Engine coolant bypass valve
At around 36,500 miles, my Toyota Corolla began experiencing issues with the coolant bypass valve, leading to engine overheating. This malfunction has significantly impacted my ability to drive safely, as the vehicle displays a notification every five seconds, obstructing my view of the digital speedometer and making it difficult to accurately monitor my speed. The issue was not indicated by a check engine light but a persistent "Engine Maintenance Required" message. This defect poses a serious safety risk, and there's a potential class-action lawsuit in progress regarding this very issue, suggesting Toyota might have known about the defect but failed to disclose it. The faulty component is not available for inspection upon request. As more people began to experience similar circumstances, it could lead to fatalities. Other participants to the forums says the issues start when their covered warranty expires. Within these forums there's a inconstancy of service centers honoring fixes, with no cost, knowing that there is an issue. I took the car to both a third-party mechanic and an authorized dealership, and both confirmed the problem. I was quoted $732.85 for the parts and labor within my area. I also called Toyota Global which I was told "a low mileage car shouldn't be having this issue", however, there are countless of forums saying otherwise. **Toyota Models Affected** 2019 Toyota RAV4 2020 Toyota RAV4 2021 Toyota RAV4 2022 Toyota RAV4 2023 Toyota RAV4 2019 Toyota Corolla
The Coolant Bypass Valve needs to be replaced prematurely. This issue seems to be fairly commonplace among Toyota’s cars. My car only has 62,990 on the odo.
I am up to date with all my maintenance but at 67k miles I had a message stating “Engine Maintenance Required” message on my dashboard. I took it to the dealership and they identified the cooler bypass valve needed to be replace, apparently this is a common issue and has not been addressed by Toyota. Plus it’s difficult to find the part that needs to be replaced. There was no check engine light, and everytime I turned on the AC the engine maintenance required message would pop back up. If this is a known issue Toyota needs to make this issue public and parts available.
I got a “Engine Maintenance Required” warning message. I check with the dealer, the dealer inspected and told me about a faulty coolant bypass valve which the dealership told us a common problem for Toyota RAV4 and Corolla. The dealer did a diagnostic and found that engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery - (P268115). They asked me to order the part. A faulty coolant bypass valve risked my vehicle of a failure of the cooling system and so the engine. I had to pay $113.40 for the diagnostic and $331.75 for repair. Since it is a common problem, the manufacturer has to recall and replace the faulty part and pay the cost of the part and labor for replacing the faulty part.
Coolant bypass valve is faulty and a lot of people have had this issue. Toyota is well aware of the faulty part and it affects many models and years of cars. They want to charge 800 bucks for an easy fix. It is robbery and could be a big safety hazard if it causes engine to stall while driving
Transmission is in sport mode stopped at red light loud snapping sound and car lunged forward. Revs up with the transmission slipping with out forward movement acceleration after switching to drive mode it runs normally. Drove home didn't want to push my luck out on the road 38,683 miles on the vehicle
Transmission failed at 106000 miles
All of sudden the Engine Maintenance Required sign popped up on the screen during when I was driving. The sign popped up every time I turn on the car. I took the car to Toyota service immediately and diagnostic showed it was Engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery or open.
* What failed was engine coolant bypass valve. * Safety was at risk as the failure can lead to engine overheating over time. * it has been reproduced by countless others after their vehicle hits 30k to 70k. *there was a message on the dash about “engine issues and to take to dealer”
Engine coolant bypass valve failed
On June 15, a message appeared on the multi-informational panel that the pre-collision system was unavailable. An orange warning symbol also appeared on the dash. Car was repaired a at Kendall, Toyota, 10943 S. Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33156 in Kendall, Florida. The Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor was replaced. The unit itself cost $843 and replacement labor was $350. Like other Toyota radar sensors, I believe this one has design defects. It is a safety issue. I assume that many people will not replace it. The message on the panel does not say the unit needs replacement. I retained the faulty unit and it is available for inspection. It is Toyota part #88210-07010. There are no signs of damage that I could see. The unit has not been open and I have put it in a baggie. It has not been inspected by anyone. The new part has the same part number. There were no prior warnings or symptoms.
We took our corolla to the San Luis Obispo toyota dealership for replacement of fuel pump per national recall of that part. Since then whenever we park the car on an incline we can strongly smell gas fumes in the cabin. When we took it back stating the problem they took it in but did not touch anything on the car (there were items on the back seat they would need to remove I order to get to the gas tank that contains the fuel pump.) When we went in the invoice was marked "call after five" in pencil
Engine Coolant Bypass Valve faulty. Charged $176.95 for the dealer to diagnose what is already known issue. The dealer wanted $663 to replace the part. Toyota knows about this issue yet acts like they had to perform $176 diagnose. The car never blew any codes CIL and they say that this particular part doesnt cause a code but had to use a " special" diagnose tool.
My service engine came on took to dealership they said my coolant bypass valve no good and iam always have to change out my brake pads on the front
While driving on the highway the airbag sensor light came on. I did not hit anything and air bags did not deploy but the light is on showing some issue but I can not get into dealership to check for sometime. There are other recalls on this issue for this same car but not for my particular VIN. Sure seems like a safety issue that Toyota should check out for free to owners.
The bypass coolant valve has failed. Car displays message stating engine maintenance required but no other warning signs. Diagnostic test proved that it’s the bypass coolant valves. Upon further research this seems to be a frequent problem on the 2019 to 2022 Toyotas.
Coolant valve is faulty.
The clutch slave cylinder started leaking fluid. Luckily I noticed this issue before the level was too low. This is especially dangerous as this fluid is shared with the brake system so a loss of too much fluid could cause both a loss of clutch control and a loss of brakes. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic and the issue was found. This issue is also very commonly reported on forums about the 2019 corolla hatchback with a manual transmission.
Clutch/transmission going out. Would not go into gear while driving ! Turned car off then started it up again and regained function. Replaced entire clutch components back in July of 2022. Been driving manual transmission vehicles for over 20 years and never had an issue with clutch or transmission. Plenty of documentation of this issue on Toyota forum sites .
Engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery or open - code P268115 Engine maintenance alert light appeared after (a day after, and then would not be on, and sometimes turn on, erratic maintenance message) I brought car in for scheduled engine maintenance per Toyota. The Toyota technician advised me to immediately take care of it but does not have the part in stock. This is the Toyota Dealer service in Manhattan Beach, CA.
On February 17, 2024 I was involved in a hit and run. I was T-boned on the passenger side and the front passenger door wouldn't open and no airbags deployed. Later on in February I received a Toyota Airbag Contol Unit Settlement. I haven't ever received an recall information on any recalls for my vehicle.
ENGINE MAINTENANCE CAME ON, TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST SHOWED COOLANT BYPASS VALVE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE AND IF NOT TAKING CARE OF, IT COULD CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS. I WAS TOLD THE PART IS $200 PLUS AND LABOR IS $500 PLUS. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE AND FIXED FREE OF CHARGE BY TOYOTA. IN DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH, SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ARE LISTED REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THE GENTLEMAN AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I TOOK MY CAR STATED HE HAS DONE SEVERAL VEHICLES RECENTLY WITH THIS ISSUE. I DON'T THINK USE AS A CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS KNOWN ISSUE BY TOYOTA. I'M ALSO STILL WAITING TO GET THE RECALL FIXED ON MY MOTHER'S TOYOTA RAV4 RECALL WHICH I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION ON BACK IN EARLY 2023. THEIR EXCUSE IS NOT PARTS AVAILABLE. SO IN THE MEAN TIME, IF THE VEHICLE CATCHES FIRE, THEY SAY OH WELL. I AM OVER TOYOTA GETTING AWAY WITH THIS.
4 years after production with approx 44k miles the car began displaying the message “engine maintained required visit dealer” after investigating discovered coolant valve was the issue. Problem seems to be a common occurrence with the model car for other owners.
The vehicle began to go up and down in revolutions per minute (RPM) while at a traffic light or stop sign.
Driving up a slight grade, vehicle shuddered and then felt like it popped out of gear. Would not engage in any gear and now I am unable the shift into park or any other gear
Coolant bypass valve failed prior to car driving 50,000, confirmed by dealership. Failure can cause electrical issues. Car indicated engine maintenance required
I purchased my 2019 corolla hatch manual new. Before even 9000 miles I started having transmission issues. I could not shift into first when the car was cold. It was like hitting a wall. I had to cycle through all the other gears before it would go back into first. I took it to Toyota. They were unable to replicate the issue. It happened so sporadically I asked the technician what would happen if I had transmission issues in the future since they were unable to witness the problem. He assured me that the issues were documented, and it would not be a problem at all. Now at 30000 I am having serious issues. The clutch is engaging late, it is chattering in first and second and there are metallic fragments in my transmission fluid. The entire transmission and clutch assembly is going to have to be replaced. Toyota is stating that it will probably not be covered by my warranty because the clutch is a wear item. I've driven a manual for decades. I've put over 100000 miles on a Toyota clutch I previously owned that still worked perfectly when I sold it. This issue is not a driver caused issue. The 2019 is notorious for transmission and clutch issues if you search any kind of forums. The automatic transmission was recalled; however, the manual owners are just up creek without a paddle because Toyota can claim it's all a wear issue caused by the driver. I have not received a decision from the warranty department yet, but I am pretty sure it is not going to be covered by the warranty.
CVT TRANSMISSION is hesitating after first gear, going over 40mph and going up hills. I was told by Toyota that it would cost $8,200 to fix/REPLACE. The car has 125,000 miles on it. THAT Shouldn't happen. Since the Corolla Hatchbacks were recalled that year, why weren't ALL of the corollas recalled. Reading on-line, I see I am not alone. This is wrong. And I still have about $2K owed on it.
Vehicle has a bank to lean 1 engine code and when at idle, fluctuates from 700 rpm down below 500 RPM and shakes the car. The vehicle has stalled twice on me while stopped at a stop light. I understand the vehicle has had two recalls for the same issue and it has not fixed the problem yet.
On August 28, 2023, I purchased two Yokohama Avid Ascend LX BW tires, size 205/55R16. I was charged $209.19 for each tire, plus another $129.95 for a 4-wheel alignment. The total for the two tires and alignment was $549.16. I had these tires for a little over one month before this incident. On October 4, 2023, after driving about eight miles on the freeway at around 60 to 65 mph, I pulled off the freeway to buy gas. When I started to leave the gas station, I noticed my tire warning light was on. I got out of the car and noticed the left rear tire was low and going flat. I drove home (less than one mile) and called a towing service. The towing service did not arrive. So I sprayed canned air in the tire and drove to the tire shop. The tire shop person said the tire was not repairable and showed me a large hole in the tire tread with what looked like fraying around the hole. The person said he could not tell what caused the flat but suggested it may have been aggravated by heat. It was about 95 degrees outside. They put the spare on my car. I called the dealership where I bought the tire, and they said to take it to an affiliated dealership, which I did the following day. That dealership person took pictures of the tire but did not know what caused the flat. They said they would have to order a replacement tire, which did not arrive until October 6, 2023. They charged me another $36.16 to install the replacement. For the large price charged, these tires should have been durable,
Bought this vehicle with 30k one week after the transmission went off and the dealer have to replace completely the transmission, almost two years later the transmission went bad again, now I don’t have any guarantee but two transmission in two year?
Phone charging cord is prone to getting pulled into the steering column and extremely difficult to remove. When I was able to remove the cord, I discovered a wire or spring the steering wheel assembly must have come undone, because the airbag light is on, and my cruise control no longer works, and neither do the steering wheel controls for the radio
The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was later towed a local service center who diagnosed that the fuel pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Toyota didn't install new fuel pump in my car. I set it up to be done when I had the air bags done. They did the air bags but never did the fuel pump recall. I've been fighting with them ever since. Now my fuel pump is going out. My car stalls when I put any amount of gas in it. I'm afraid it will stall while I'm driving which is why there is a recall on the part.
I had a head on Collison and the air bags did not deploy and should have.
I was at a red light. When the light turned green and I pressed the accelerator the car wouldn’t move. The check engine, charging system malfunction and electronic power steering system warning light appeared on dash. Car locked up. I moved car into neutral and then drive and car was able to move. Took it to dealer next day. Cars almost ran into the back of me! I had just turned on the street from I-85! So far it hasn’t been reproduced at dealer.
My car went into Limp mode at high way speeds. the transmission is faulty. it feels like a misfire. the transmission does not shit out of 1st.
Dirivjg when all of a sudden the vehicle slows down and a light turns on, pressure solinoid Wher out aswell as the sensor. Had to replace the transmisson, not the only one with this issue
Clutch failed suddenly while driving (has a manual transmission), nearly causing an accident. there was no waring. no warning lights. car had been serviced 2 weeks earlier. I returned it to dealer and they could not tell me why it failed. It will require total replacement of system.
Car jerks to the left on left curves above 30 mph and when going over bumps, this happens with drive assist features both enabled and disabled. On braking the car stutters. Oscillating sound heard from right front side.
Motor mounts failed on a 2019 Toyota Corolla. Replaced for an exorbitant amount of money. Never had this happen on any of my cars. Engine was rocking back and forth when acceleration and when I stopped. This could have damaged other components in the car resulting in my safety.
The contact owned a 2019 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH and making a left turn, another vehicle crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle spun, hit a pothole, and landed on the grass on the side of the road. The front driver's side bag failed to deploy. The front passenger's side air bag was deployed through the front passenger seat was not occupied. The contact did not seek medical assistance immediately. The contact drove the vehicle to the side of the road. The contact sustained neck pain, bruises on the left knee and buttocks, and pain on the back of the head. The contact later sought medical assistance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was totaled. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
