NHTSA campaign 99V042000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Spartan Motors, Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Cooling System › Hoses/Lines/Piping/Fittings

Spartan Motors, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 3, 1999 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 133. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRANSIT BUSES. DUE TO THE ROUTING OF THE HIGH PRESSURE HYDRAULIC HOSE CONNECTING THE DISTRIBUTION MANIFOLD TO THE COOLING FAN, HYDRAULIC MOTOR OR THE HIGHER OPERATIONAL SPEED OF CNG ENGINES COULD, IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, PUSH THE PRESSURE DEVELOPED BY THE HYDRAULIC PUMP BEYOND THE NOMINAL WORKING PRESSURE OF THE INSTALLED HOSE. THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF STRESSING THE HOSE BEYOND ITS MINIMUM BEND RADIUS AND/OR BEYOND ITS NOMINAL WORKING TEMPERATURE/PRESSURE RATINGS.

The risk

A HOSE FAILURE COULD OCCUR ALLOWING HYDRAULIC FLUID STEAM TO IMPINGE ONTO HOT EXHAUST COMPONENTS AND INITIATE AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.

The remedy

SPARTAN IS DEVELOPING A FIELD RETROFIT KIT WHICH WILL CONSIST OF A NEW HYDRAULIC FLUID HOSE THAT WILL BE 3 INCHES LONGER THAN THE ORIGINAL AND HAVE A HIGHER WORKING PRESSURE RATING; A 45 DEGREE HOSE CONNECTION FITTING WILL BE ADDED AT THE FAN MOTOR INLET PORT; THE HOSE WILL BE RE-ROUTED AND ALSO CLIPPED OR CLAMPED; AND THE MANIFOLD BLOCK/PRIORITY VALVE WILL BE RELOCATED.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 99V042000.
