NHTSA campaign 98V330000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Les Enterprises M.corbeil: Structure › Body

Les Enterprises M.corbeil reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 23, 1998 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,545. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL BUSES BUILT ON FORD AND GENERAL MOTORS CHASSIS. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 217, "BUS WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THE REAR DOOR MUST PROVIDE AN OPENING LARGE ENOUGH TO PERMIT UNOBSTRUCTED PASSAGE OF A RECTANGULAR PARRELEPIPED.

The risk

IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE REAR EMERGENCY DOOR IS NARROW, WHICH COULD MAKE EVACUATION OF THE VEHICLE MORE DIFFICULT.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT BACKS ON THE REAR SEATS WITH STRAIGHTER AND THINNER SEAT BACKS, ALLOWING FOR FULL ACCESS TO THE REAR EMERGENCY DOOR.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 98V330000.
