NHTSA campaign 97V041000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ford Motor Company: Fuel System, Gasoline › Delivery › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

Ford Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 20, 1997 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FD1060 AND FD1460 DIESEL ENGINES AND OPTIONAL MANUAL FUEL SHUTOFF SYSTEMS. THE HAND CONTROL OF THE MANUAL FUEL SHUTOFF SYSTEM, MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE'S INSTRUMENT PANEL, IS LABELED WITH THE WORDS "SHUTOFF FUEL LOCK", AND THESE WORDS ARE NOT ILLUMINATED OTHER THAN BY THE CAB'S INTERIOR LIGHTS. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 101, "CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS."

The risk

DUE TO THE LACK OF ILLUMINATION AND INCOMPLETE LABELING OF THE MANUAL FUEL SHUTOFF SYSTEM, A DRIVER MAY NOT IDENTIFY THE HAND CONTROL TO SHUT OFF FUEL SUPPLY TO THE ENGINE.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE MANUAL FUEL SHUTOFF SYSTEM WITH THE STANDARD AUTOMATIC KEY-OFF FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 97V041000.
