NHTSA campaign 21V971000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Motor Coach Industries: Fuel System, Diesel › Fuel Injection System › Fuel Rail

Motor Coach Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 15, 2021 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,125. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2019-2022 D4000 ISTV, D4500, 2021 D4000, D4520, 2020-2021 D4505, D4005, 2020-2022 D45CRTLE, and 2019-2021 J4500 vehicles equipped with certain Cummins X12 diesel engines. The fuel tubes between the fuel rail and the injectors for cylinders four, five, and six may fatigue and crack, which can result in a high pressure fuel leak.

The risk

A high pressure fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

The remedy

On engines with 75 miles or less, Cummins dealers will install vibration isolators to the fuel tubes. Engines with more than 75 miles will receive new fuel tubes with vibration isolators. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 11, 2022. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. MCI's number for this recall is R21-028.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 21V971000.
