Daimler Trucks North America, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 25, 2021 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 159. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 school buses equipped with Cummins B6.7N engines. The engine control module software may be calibrated incorrectly, causing the engine to not limit engine speed or torque as intended for certain safety-related functions such as vehicle braking, traction and stability control, speed control, or collision avoidance.

The risk

If safety-related functions such as vehicle braking, stability, speed, and collision avoidance do not function properly, it can increase the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DTNA will work with the engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. to notify owners, and Cummins dealers will recalibrate the engine control module, free of charge. Owner notifications were mailed on March 29, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA number for this recall is FL-879.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 21V120000.
