NHTSA campaign 20V627000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.: Power Train › Driveline › Driveshaft

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 9, 2020 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Mercedes-Benz USA LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLE 350 vehicles. The connection of the locking ring between the front and rear part of the drive shaft might not have been installed correctly, possibly resulting in a loss of power transfer between the transfer case and the rear axle differential.

The risk

If the transfer case disconnects from the rear axle differential the vehicle could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

The affected vehicles are still in dealer inventory, therefore no owners will be notified. Dealers will replace the drive shaft, free of charge. Both vehicles were repaired in December 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020100020.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 20V627000.
