NHTSA campaign 20V394000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Coaches North America: Structure › Body › Hood › Hinge and Attachments

Daimler Coaches North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 3, 2020 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 58. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Coaches North America (DCNA) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Setra S407 and 2019-2020 S417 passenger coaches. The engine compartment flap may not have sufficient welding seams on the hinges, allowing the hinge connection to fail and the engine compartment flap to detach from the coach.

The risk

If the engine compartment flap detaches from the coach while it is in motion, it can become a projectile, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DCNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine compartment flap seam welds and, if necessary, re-weld or replace the engine compartment flap, free of charge. The recall began August 28, 2020. Owners may contact DCNA customer service at 1-905-403-7807. DCNA's number for this recall is 75.00U20104A. Recall 21V469 supersedes this recall.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 20V394000.
