NHTSA campaign 18V858000 · Part 573 safety recall report

McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Inc.: Fuel System, Other

McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 3, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 199. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Inc. (McNeilus) is recalling certain 2016-2018 McNeilus Meridian Front Loader, Atlantic Front Loader, XE Rear Loader, Bridgemaster Mixer, Standard Mixer, and Oshkosh S-Series vehicles, equipped with certain MPVE-250 One-Turn Valves (OTV) on the CNG fuel tanks. If the valve knob is turned more than one turn, the valve's snap ring may fail and the valve stem may forcibly eject from the valve body.

The risk

The forcible ejection of the stem may increase the risk of injury to those nearby. Additionally, the unintended release of CNG can increase the risk of a fire.

The remedy

McNeilus will notify owners, and dealers will replace the valve with a valve from another brand, free of charge. The recall began January 7, 2019 . Owners may contact McNeilus customer service at 1-888-686-7278.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V858000.
