NHTSA campaign 17V661000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Navistar, Inc.: Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

Navistar, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 18, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 105. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2015-2018 IC Bus RE commercial buses. The drop hose fittings for the air brakes may not be oriented correctly, and, as a result, the brake hoses may contact the tire when the wheels are turned to the limit.

The risk

Contact with the tires may damage the service brake air hose, causing the brakes to become inoperative or lengthening the distance needed to stop the bus, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will reposition the drop hose fittings and replace any damaged drop hose or wheel speed sensor harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 21, 2017. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-331-332-4331. Navistar's number for this recall is 17511.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V661000.
