NHTSA campaign 17V519000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Gillig LLC: Seat Belts › Front › Buckle Assembly

Gillig LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 23, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3,432. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Gillig LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Low Floor transit buses, equipped with Recaro Commercial Bus Driver Seats. In the affected seats, the seat belt buckle may be stuck in the locked position, preventing the seat belt tongue from being able to be inserted and locked.

The risk

If the seat belt cannot be latched, the bus may be operated without the seat belt being used, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The remedy

Gillig will notify owners and work with the supplier to replace the buckles, free of charge. The recall began on October 4, 2017. Owners may contact Adient-Recaro at 1-248-484-3250 or Gillig Service at 1-800-735-1500.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V519000.
