Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 23, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,815. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Hino Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. (Hino) is recalling certain 2013-2017 XFC710L, XFC720L, XFC730L, and XFC740L vehicles. The clutch drum spline of the front module of the Hybrid Vehicle (HV) motor may wear out.

The risk

If the clutch drum spline wears out, the vehicle will lose the ability to move under its own power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Hino will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clutch drum spline with one that has increased wear resistance, free of charge. An interim notice was mailed to owners on May 22, 2017. The recall began on November 9, 2017. Owners may contact Hino customer service at 1-248-699-9390.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V201000.
