NHTSA campaign 16V893000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Thor Motor Coach: Structure › Body › Door › Hinge and Attachments

Thor Motor Coach reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 13, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 209. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Outlaw motorhomes, models 37BG, 37LS, 37RB, 38RE and 38RF, manufactured January 13, 2016, to December 8, 2016. The affected vehicles have rear cargo door hinges with welds that may be inadequate for securing the hinge pin to the hinge plate.

The risk

If the welds are insufficient, the hinge may fail and the door could open with more force than normal, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy

TMC will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the hinge weld thickness, replacing the hinge as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on February 6, 2017. Owners may contact TMC customer service at 1-877-500-1020.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V893000.
