NHTSA campaign 15V820000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Polaris Industries, Inc.: Seat Belts

Polaris Industries, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 7, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,364. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Polaris Industries, Inc. (Polaris) is recalling certain model year 2015 GEM EL, ES, E4, E4S, ELXD, E6, E6S, and E2 vehicles manufactured December 15, 2014, to August 25, 2015. The seat belts in the affected vehicles have retractor mechanisms that may fail, causing the seat belt to be stuck in one position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

The risk

If the seat belt does not retract or extend, the seat occupant may not be properly secured in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

The remedy

GEM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt assemblies, free of charge. The recall began on December 31, 2015. Owners may contact GEM Consumer Service Department at 1-855-743-3436. Polaris' number for this recall is L-15-02.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V820000.
