NHTSA campaign 15V388000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Spartan Motors, Inc.: Power Train › Axle Assembly

Spartan Motors, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 19, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 144. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Spartan Motors, Inc. (Spartan) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 K2, K3 and MM chassis manufactured October 2, 2013, to April 2, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the fasteners that attach the stay rod (v-rod) to the rear drive axle may not have been installed with thread locker or tightened in the correct sequence.

The risk

If the fasteners come loose, the stay rod may disconnect from the rear axle, resulting in a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fasteners using thread lock, tightening them in the proper sequence and with the required torque values, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2015. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-582-3454. Spartan's number for this recall is 15010.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V388000.
