NHTSA campaign 15V055000 · Part 573 safety recall report

KTM North America, Inc.: Suspension › Front

KTM North America, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 2, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 249. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

KTM North America, Inc. (KTM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Husqvarna FE 350 S and FE 501 S motorcycles manufactured from July 23, 2014, to October 17, 2014. In the forks of the affected motorcycles, the threaded connection between the piston rod and fork cap may not have been sufficiently tightened and therefore the piston rod could become stuck within the fork leg.

The risk

If the piston rod detaches within the fork leg, the front suspension could malfunction and destabilize the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

KTM will notify owners, and Husqvarna motorcycle dealers will inspect the torque of the fork piston rod to the fork cap, correcting it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 21, 2015. Owners may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090. KTM's number for this recall is TB 1503. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V-772 in its entirety.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V055000.
