Mack Trucks, Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Engine › Diesel
Mack Trucks, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 20, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 35. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain model year 2014 CXU tractor trailers manufactured June 21, 2013, through October 4, 2013 and equipped with an automatic over-speed protection system. In the affected vehicles, the protection system, designed to monitor diesel engine speed and shutdown the engine should it rev excessively, may be wired incorrectly and may not operate as designed.
The risk
Without a system to control the engine speed, if airborne hydrocarbons (combustible vapors) enter through the air intake, excessive engine speed may result in a catastrophic engine failure and/or engine fire.
The remedy
Mack will notify owners, and dealers will correct the system wiring, free of charge. The recall began on February 20, 2014. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-336-393-2000. Mack's number for this recall is SC0374.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V641000.
