NHTSA campaign 12V519000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mack Trucks, Inc: Electrical System

Mack Trucks, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 18, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 260. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Mack Trucks is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 GU, LEU, and MRU trucks, manufactured from December 12, 2007, through May 8, 2008 and equipped with a certain focal mounted retarder control box. The control box may lose its electrical ground.

The risk

If the control box loses ground, it may have localized overheating. This could lead to a vehicle fire.

The remedy

All affected vehicles were sold to one customer that has already been notified. An official owner notification letter will be mailed to the one customer in early November 2012. Mack will replace the suspect control box on the affected vehicles, free of charge. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-800-866-1177.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V519000.
