NHTSA campaign 05V351000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Pierce Manufacturing: Seats

Pierce Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 10, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 90. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN FIRE TRUCKS WITH COMMAND CABS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 207,"SEATING SYSTEMS." THE RESCUE BODY OFFERINGS DO NOT MEET THE PULL TEST REQUIREMENTS. THE PEDESTAL SEAT WAS MOUNTED BY DRILLING AND TAPPING THE CAB OR BODY FLOOR.

The risk

IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE PEDESTAL SEAT FASTENERS COULD FAIL TO RESTRAIN THE SEAT, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SEAT PEDESTALS. IF THE SEAT WAS MOUNTED WITH TAPPED FASTENERS, THE FASTENERS WILL BE REMOVED AND A HOLE WILL BE DRILLED TO REPLACE THE MOUNTING FASTENERS WITH 7/16" BOLTS AND NUTS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 19, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIERCE AT 920-832-3249.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V351000.
