Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc.: Equipment › Other › Labels

Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 27, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,435. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN DIESEL CLASS A MOTOR HOMES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF PART 567, "CERTIFICATION." THE MANUFACTURERS' TOW HITCH RECEIVER INFORMATION LABEL WAS PRINTED WITH THE INCORRECT WEIGHT CARRYING CAPACITY VALUE AND THE INCORRECT TONGUE WEIGHT VALUE.

The risk

THE WEIGHT LABEL ON THE HITCH RECEIVER PROVIDES THE MAXIMUM TRAILER WEIGHT RATING AND THE MAXIMUM TONGUE WEIGHT RATING. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THESE RATINGS NOT BE EXCEEDED. FAILURE TO COMPLY COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE MOTOR HOME FRAME, BODY, OR HITCH RECEIVER AND COULD CAUSE UNSTABLE DRIVING AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTRICS WHICH MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

The remedy

FLEETWOOD WILL MAIL OWNERS THE CORRECT TOW HITCH RECEIVER WEIGHT INFORMATION LABEL. IF OWNERS DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE INSTALLING THE LABEL, DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE LABEL FOR THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 4, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FLEETWOOD AT 800-509-3418.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V333000.
