NHTSA campaign 04V563000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Veritrans Specialty Vehicles, Inc.: Structure

Veritrans Specialty Vehicles, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 23, 2004 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 43. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CERTAIN TRANSIT BUSES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THE HIGH-BACK SEATING PARTIALLY BLOCKS THE REAR EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW.

The risk

A WINDOW MAY NOT OPEN AFTER APPLYING THE REQUIRED FORCES ALLOWING A PERSON TO ESCAPE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJUURIES.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL HAVE THE REAR EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW REPLACED WITH A SOLID REAR WINDOW, AND WILL HAVE AN EMERGENCY EXIT ROOF HATCH INSTALLED IN THE ROOF OF THE BUS TO MEET SAFETY STANDARD. THE RECALL BEGAN JANUARY 24, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT VSV GOSHEN AT 574-206-7025.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 04V563000.
