NHTSA campaign 03E040000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Detroit Diesel Corp.: Fuel System, Diesel

Detroit Diesel Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 9, 2003 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 52,830. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN FREIGHTLINER FLD, CENTURY, COLUMBIA, AND ARGOSY TRUCK EQUIPPED WITH SERIES 60 ENGINES, A PRESSURIZED FUEL LINE ON THE LEFT REAR SIDE OF THE ENGINE CONNECTED TO THE REAR OF THE CYLINDERHEAD CAN RUB AGAINST THE CYLINDER BLOCK, POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN A DIESEL FUEL LEAK.

The risk

A FUEL LEAK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAN RESULT IN FUEL SPILLED ONTO THE GROUND,LEAVING A SLIPPERY ROAD SURFACE, WHICH INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DETROIT DIESEL WILL REPLACE THE FUEL LINES, AND RE-ROUTE THEM AWAY FROM THE CYLINDER BLOCK OR OTHER POTENTIAL RUB POINTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 30, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DETROIT DIESEL AT 313-592-3708.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 03E040000.
