North American Bus Industries: Suspension › Rear
North American Bus Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 12, 2002 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,474. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH DIESEL OR LIQUID NATURAL GAS (LNG) FUEL SYSTEMS ONLY, IN THE AREA OF THE REAR AXLE LOWER RADIUS ROD ATTACHMENT TO THE SUSPENSION SUPPORT (OR "C" FRAME), A WELDING PROBLEM EXISTS.
The risk
IF A CRACK WERE TO DEVELOP AND PROPAGATE AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE BUSHING, THE RADIUS ROD ATTACHMENT COULD BECOME LOOSE AND ALLOW MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE LOWER RADIUS ROD AND THE REAR AXLE. SHOULD THIS HAPPEN, THE REAR AXLE POSITION COULD SHIFT DURING ACCELERATION, DECELERATION, OR IN TURNS, AND COULD AFFECT THE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLE.
The remedy
OWNERS ARE BEING REQUESTED TO INSPECT THEIR BUSES FOR CRACKS AND TO REMOVE THE BUSES FROM SERVICE THAT HAVE CRACKS EXCEEDING SPECIFIC CRITERIA. NABI WILL ARRANGE TO REPAIR ALL THE VEHICLES. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 31, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NABI AT 1-888-424-5844, EXTENSION 7900.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 02V332000.
