NHTSA campaign 01V304001 · Part 573 safety recall report

Country Coach Inc: Steering › Gear Box (other Than Rack and Pinion)

Country Coach Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 12, 2002 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 172. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOMES. THE STEERING GEAR BOX IS MOUNTED ON A SUPPORT LOCATED UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT FLOOR. ON MOTOR HOME MODELS, THIS SUPPORT VARIES IN HEIGHT WITH THE OPTIONAL INTERIOR HEIGHT. WITH 83 AND 86 INCH HEIGHT OPTIONS, THE SUPPORT MAY BE OVERLOADED IN CERTAIN OPERATION CONDITIONS.

The risk

A CONTINUOUSLY FULLY LOADED VEHICLE THAT HAS TO MANEUVER IN TIGHT SPACE FREQUENTLY CAN DEVELOP STRESS CRACKS AT THE STEERING GEAR BOX SUPPORT. A LOSS OF CONTROL COULD OCCUR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL ADD A REINFORCEMENT TO THE STEERING SUPPORT. PREVOST IS HANDLING THE OWNER NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT PREVOST AT 418-831-5432 OR COUNTRY COACH AT 1-800-547-8015.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 01V304001.
