NHTSA campaign 00V096001 · Part 573 safety recall report

Hyundai Caribbean-Puerto Rico: Visibility › Windshield Wiper/Washer › Linkages

Hyundai Caribbean-Puerto Rico reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 7, 2000 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 400. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE PROTECTIVE RUBBER BOOT WHICH COVERS THE BALL JOINT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR DRIVE ARM AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPER DRAG LINK CAN STICK TO THE SURFACE OF THE DRIVE ARM. IF THE RUBBER BOOT STICKS AND THE WIPER MOTOR IS TURNED ON, BINDING OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE DRIVE ARM AND DRAG LINK RESULTS, CAUSING THE BALL JOINT CONNECTION TO DISENGAGE.

The risk

IF THE CONNECTION DISENGAGES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE INOPERATIVE. INOPERATIVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PROTECTIVE RUBBER BOOT AND WILL LUBRICATE THE NEW PROTECTIVE RUBBER BOOT WHERE IT CONTACTS THE DRIVE ARM.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 00V096001.
