NHTSA campaign 00V054000 · Part 573 safety recall report

General Motors Corp.: Steering › Linkages › Drag › Link › Connection

General Motors Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 28, 2000 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,462. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CHASSIS CABS. THE TAPERED HOLE IN THE DRAG LINK END THAT ATTACHES TO THE PITMAN ARM TAPERED BALL STUD MAY BE MACHINED TOO DEEP CAUSING THE HOLE TO BE OVERSIZED. A DRAG LINK WITH AN OVERSIZED HOLE MAY NOT "SEAT" THE PITMAN ARM TAPERED BALL WHEN ASSEMBLED. THIS COULD CAUSE HIGHER THAN NORMAL FRICTION BETWEEN COMPONENTS DURING OPERATION, AND POSSIBLY RESULT IN JOINT SEPARATION OR A BROKEN BALL STUD.

The risk

IF THE JOINT SEPARATED OR THE BALL STUD BRAKE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING, STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE LOST.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING LINKAGE ASSEMBLY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE DRAG LINK AND THE PITMAN ARM.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 00V054000.
