2017 Ram 1500 complaints

The electronic power steering completely failed. After we had been driving and it had been raining we were going about 55 mph down the state highway when the electronic power steering completely failed and we lost control of the steering. The dashboard warning light came on and on the notification screen stated to “service power steering“. Even though it shows absolutely no recalls just a simple search online shows that we are not the only ones with a 2017 ram 1500 with electronic power steering with the same issue. I have called around to many auto parts stores and even dealers and nobody has the part in stock. And of course our vehicle having been outside of the five years and mileage it is not under warranty. The steering is 100% locked up and will not move whatsoever. It has been inspected by a authorized ram service mechanic who has verify that it has seized up and needs replaced.

RACK & PINION FAILED, UNABLE TO STEER VEHICLE, REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE BY INDEPENDENT SERVICE CENTER - RECEIPT IS ATTACHED, NO LAMPS OR WARNING I AM SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS. RACK AND PINION SHOULD NOT FAIL WITH ONLY 51,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE.

Brake clip failed. Clip to brake pad on driver side front came loose and caused the brake pad to slip and caliper drop down onto the top of the rotor. Upon braking NO PRESSURE was being applied to the side of the rotor. All the pressure was only on the TOP OF THE ROTOR. There was no wear or etching on the side of the rotor at all, however the top of the rotor had a great deal of pitted and gouged metal. This created a very dangerous situation!

There is a known issue called the hemi tick that is the result of broken bolts on the exhaust manifold. https://www.vehiclehistory.com/articles/dodge-ram-1500-hemi-tick-recalls-worth-worrying This is a dangerous exhaust leaks that happens on almost every Ram and nothing has been recalled. To make a safe vehicle people are paying thousands to fix this and Dodge knows it is an issue! Exhaust fumes in the engine compartment flow in to the air intake and into the truck. This issue has been reproduced thousands of times.

After filling up the gas tank one morning, I was driving along the highway when suddenly there was a ding on the dashboard message saying there was a fuel sensor fail the fuel gauge indicated that I had absolutely no fuel and the miles remaining said zero it did this several times resetting itself and doing it again and it's still doing it 3 months later

Power Steering went out,looked for recall 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn.Light came on and once it cooled down worked fine again.Five months down the road done it again and NO POWER STEERING AT ALL,no warranty nothing pay out of pocket.Called dealer to order part been almost 4 months and still no part,fixing to call Dodge themselfs and find out what the deal is.Making payments on a truck with 66,000 miles on it and no part to fix it it’s asham.Dodge needs to get it together,instead of making new fast cars to sell,need to keep the customers safe first.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while reversing she felt the vehicle jerk with a loud sound coming from the vehicle causing the vehicle to come to a complete stop. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was set to diagnose the vehicle. On another occasion, the vehicle was getting detailed and it was noticed that the rear window was leaking and had white mold. The vehicle was taking to the dealer who stated that no failure was found. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 5,000.

I was driving on interstate and my vehicle was running fine. Without any warning, my check engine light came on and "Service ETC" flashed. Vehicle went into limp mode and would not go over 10 miles an hour. Had it towed to dealer, a gasket on the EGR was bad, had been leaking oil into my turbo for "quite some time" according to the dodge dealership. My turbo was blown and manifold melted. This is a diesel and I only had 108,000 miles on it. Always have done the maintenance. The cost of the repair was $11,971.62. There is no reason why this vehicle should have been fine one second and have a catastrophic failure the next. I am aware of the class action lawsuit for models up to 2016 and my truck is a 2017. I believe that this is the same problem. It was 10:00 pm when this happened on the highway. I am very fortunate that I was able to get off of the highway and not be involved in a serious accident at night.

POWER STEERING FAILS COMPLEATLY

My Engine light turned on and vehicle kept overheating. Coolant levels we’re getting very high. Coolant was not cycling through the engine properly & needs new head gasket. The dealership I took it too said they have 5 other trucks with the same issue

The contact stated that the service electronic throttle control warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park at a nearby parking lot. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the fuel injector to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but continued to experience the failure. The VIN was associated with 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

On Saturday, July 16th, I was passing a vehicle at approximately 65mph on a two lane road with no shoulder when my engine stalled. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch of the road and was able to coast to a safe location to attempt to restart my engine. After I stopped, I attempted numerous times to restart my engine without success. This stall caused me to be on the side of the road with no shoulder partially sticking out into the roadway. I eventually had to be towed to my mechanic. Once at my mechanic, he found two recalls that had similar symptoms concerning Dodge RAM Ecodiesels- recall W58 and W68 along with TSB 14-007-21. I contacted RAM and was informed that my VIN number was not included in this recall and that they would not fix my vehicle under this recall without me paying in full and their mechanic verifying what was wrong. They were also backlogged and could not even diagnose the issue for 5-8 business days. I elected to have my mechanic perform the work. Once my mechanic opened the transmission assembly, he found that the tone wheel in fact had lost a piece of the magnetic material just like the photo in the service bulletin. He had to repair all the components of the tone wheel and crank sensor assembly just as the service bulleton said to get the vehicle to run again. I have contacted RAM and they stated there is nothing they can do since there is not an open recall on my VIN number even though my truck matches the model and engine type along with affected

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while her granddaughter was driving at slower speeds, the steering wheel seized with the wheels turned to the left. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

POWER STEERING GOES OUT WITH NO WARNING LAMPS OR MESSAGES

On start up makes a ticking noise. Upon further investigation noticed broken studs on exhaust manifold bolts. This causes an exhaust leak which may lead to possible fire.

Was in an accident on 7/8/2022. A vehicle pulled out in front of us and the speed we was traveling at was 45 mph at the time of the impact and airbag’s did not deploy.

We driving down the highway in state of Idaho. When all of a sudden steering wheel when out of control. My mom could not control it. The steering wheel was go super fast side to side . When ended up going on the side of the highway.

On 26 June 2022 while driving home the truck doors stated locking and the lights flashed every time I came to a stop. On 28 June 2022 the truck self started while inside the garage. The key fob was inside the home on a shelf with no one around and nobody was touching the truck. This is very unsafe since we have an attached garage and we sleep about 12 feet away from the tail pipe. On 29 June 2022 I took it to Dishman Dodge in Spokane WA where I was told that this has never happened. I am the original owner and this truck has had many previous electrical issues (Back up camera, cruise control, fail to start due to security chip pickup, wiper control, power window). It now has 62,000 miles.

On June 23rd, 2022, just arrived at a campground with a travel trailer. Noticed something hanging from under the truck. The 32-gallon fuel tank was just filled less than a mile prior to arrival. Upon further observation, the fuel tank hanging with only the rear fuel tank strap intact. The front fuel tank strap was still attached to the mounting bolt, however, the frame end was pulled through. The strap appears to be completely intact. The frame area that holds the strap was severely corroded and rusted out. There is very little rust anywhere on this truck. The front strap was then bent into the vehicles driveshaft by the hanging fuel tank, a cut a groove into the aluminum driveshaft. The damage may have compromised the integrity of the driveshaft as well. My vehicle is well maintained and cared for. I am a mechanic, however, I have it scheduled to be inspected at the Ram dealership. I will upload pictures as soon as possible. Prior research shows Ram truck model years 2009-2012 had the same issues. I reside in Wisconsin. If I did not notice this, the fuel tank would have fallen out, beyond any doubt, on our return trip and 30 plus gallons of fuel with it. It would have been hit first by our rear axle, and the then travel trailer.

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system went out while turning. Making the turn hazardous as the wheels were impossible to rotate. This has happened multiple times and without warning. Happens both turning left and turning right and will occur when tires are straight as well. My safety and the safety of others were put as risk and continue to be at risk with this vehicle and others like it on the roads. The problem has been stored in the trucks CPM and pulled by the dealer to verify the accident occurred. I was informed nothing can be done since no recalls pull up with my particular VIN number. It has not yet been inspected by police or insurance. The "EPS!" message occurred as the steering was out.

The electric power steering failed. I was not able to safely turn my vehicle. It is a safety issue because I could have easily injure or killed myself or anyone that I crashed into. The issue is known to happen in this vehicle. There was a warning light that came on saying to service the power steering. The manufacture is not making the part to fix this issue.

My Tailgate Came Open Unexpectedly, while my trailer was hooked up. I was in a development going around a turn very shortly after pulling off from my starting point. The tailgate crushed on the jack, causing significant tailgate damage. I have been In contacts with Turnersville Dodge, and they directed me to Maple Shade NJ Alfa Romeo/ Fiat. I have been on the phone with Them numerous times, as well as sent emails. This has been going on for over a year now. There is an open recall on the tailgate latch for my particular truck. This is the reason that my tailgate came open unexpectedly and caused significant damage. I have mentioned this recall, and I get alerts weekly about the open recall on the tailgate. Nothing is being done. I run a business , and have already had the inconvenience and unsafe operations, ongoing for over a year now. I am extremely busy, and it is extremely frustrating calling and emailing, with no fix in site. It’s insanity.

Her son then jumped in the vehicle and accidentally depressed the accelerator pedal in his efforts to depress the brake pedal causing him to crash into a tree. The front of the vehicle was severely damaged and the air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries sustained by her son. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced a manufacturer's Recall under U05 associated with the failure. The failure mileage was 71,094.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was not able to restart. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle previously had the throttle position sensor, fuel system, water pump, and engine replaced at the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.

Exhaust manifolds warp leading to broken mounting bolts/ studs resulting in exhaust leak/ ticking

The air suspension system has failed completely. Without warning the driverside suspension deflated at 65mph. This causes the steering to pull to the left very quickly and could easily cause loss of control of the truck. The problem occurred with out warning. The dealers response is to not drive the truck and wait 3 weeks for a diagnostic test and then a month or longer to get parts.

My rear axle is at a ram dealership have the complete rear axle replaced. It has 90,000 mi and a few thousand miles ago it started to emit a whining noise that just continued to get louder the more I drove it. I took it in one week ago and after a tech checked it out I was told that the entire rear axle had to be replaced at a cost to me of over $5600. I opted to have a used axle installed for half the cost. This problem if left could have led to the rear axle locking up and loss of control. In searching the internet I have found that face has had some recalls on different year trucks for loose pinion nuts and low fluid from the factory and lack of proper heat treating of axle and gears leading to failure. Consumer stated old axle will be available for inspection.

The contact stated that the power steering warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the electronic power steering (EPS) module needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

Engine blew up with no warning indicators on the dash. Engine oil was full and from what the dealer found it was a bearing either the crankshaft or rod. I've been without my truck for over 2 months and fiat chrysler doesn't know when a motor will be available.

2017 RAM 1500. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO MOLD AND MILDEW IN VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VENTS LEAKED CAUSING A BUILD UP OF MOLD AND MILDEW. THE CARPET, FLOORBOARDS AND PADDING WERE ALL WET AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.

On Sunday March 27, 2022 my daughter and I were in my 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn 5.7 liter Hemi, driving east bound on a major road leading from my neighborhood. We were going about 50 mph when the entire dash board lit up like a Christmas tree, windshield wipers, radio volume going up and down, all sensors going off, and the entire speedometer went black, all of this happened going full speed, oh, and the gear shift knob turned off!!!! I couldn’t control my vehicle at all. All of this happened and then it just went black, no speedometer, no gear shifter, and no steering control!! I want to remind you that I was driving with my child in the truck!! It is now at my local mechanic with the truck completely bricked. No power whatsoever, gear is stuck, and the key fob is stuck in ACC and they cannot get it out. This needs to be investigated asap. If I was in the highway we would have killed ourselves and possibly someone else. I lost all control over my vehicle due to some freak electrical issue Chrysler refuses to fix. Maybe a fat lawsuit will help. If you research the complaints on this vehicle, you will see this is not the first time this has happened. Does someone, or a family, have to die first before you will respond?!! This is on you Chrysler to do the right thing. Recall these trucks ASAP. Two right rear exhaust manifold bolts broke causing a potential exhaust leak into the cabin.

There is a known problem with the 5.7l hemi engines having the exhaust manifold bolts break. This happened to me where the manifold separated from the engine and caused untreated exhaust gases to escape into the engine bay. These gases were then being sucked into the cabin through hvac system due to the close proximity of the cabin air intake vent and the gases escaping in the engine bay and seeping from underneath the hood when at low speed or idling with the hvac system on.

While in gear the throttle has accelerated uncontrollably without a foot on the pedal. It has happened twice now and both times resulted in significant damage. Applying the brake made no difference they were just overpowered by the motor. The vehicle is going to be towed to a body shop to get a repair estimate. Last time the damage was about $14,000. The vehicle is not safe if you cannot control the speed. They thought last time my foot slipped of the brake onto the throttle but I said no it had not. I was to busy trying to control the truck to notice if any warning lights went on. However earlier in the day the cruise control would not turn on.

The contact took the vehicle to local dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer informed that the two air vents on the cab have leakage, and the floorboards were soaked and needed replacement. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

Air ride suspension drops to bump stops when it rains. Causing the truck to have no suspension give that can cause severe damage. Truck has been at the dealers over this problem multiple times, they do not know what is causing the system to fail now. They have replaced the main components and the truck is still sitting on all 4 bump stops unable to drive.

Electronic power steering stopped working while traveling at highway speeds. No warnings, no issues with steering previously. Manual steering when eps fails is still possibly, but extremely difficult. Vehicle will operate normally after turning off and back on.

While making a left turn at low speed, I suddenly lost power steering, there was no warning message or notice and steering was very hard, I pulled over, shut the vehicle off and restarted, the power steering returned and I resumed my trip. The second incident, the vehicle was parked in my driveway, I started it up and immediately got a message on the dash that said, Service Power Steering, the power steering was not available, maneuvering was next to impossible. I have just purchased this vehicle on 2/28/22, used as is, with no warranty and I feel I have purchased a dangerous vehicle with no options available. This vehicle is a 2017 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Limited with 128,00 miles on it. I understand there are some issues with the EPS system on several of the Ram 1500 Model years, and there has even been a recall on some models. I feel it necessary to report this incident as I am afraid to drive the vehicle, which makes this purchase useless, even after researching this vehicles history before buying, I had no way of knowing of the current EPS problems as there are no current recalls for my particular truck. If there is a problem with the EPS system, at the time of manufacturing, then why haven't the 2017 models been recalled as well. Also my local dealer cannot effectively make any repairs unless he has a code or the power steering is not available at the time he inspects it, and ironically it works fine intermittently.

Fuel sensor fails

It’s the oil filter housing it’s made out of plastic and the heat of the engine cause the seals to leak oil mechanic said to upgrade it with an aluminum housing instead

My electronic power steering failed. Makes it next to impossible to steer. Thankfully low speed, so no crash. No warning prior to failure.

2017 Ram Quad cab truck leaking water into cabin ? 3 rd rear brake light gasket replaced and still finding water on front windshield and dash and also under back fold up seat storage compartments filled with water ??? There are numerous complaints re: Ram trucks of different years experiencing same problems why is this not a issue for a recall when this will rot out floor n cause mold on interior carpets and headliners ? My truck has 12,169 miles on it and I feel like it is worthless !!! I didn’t buy a fish tank I purchased a very expensive truck that Ram knows has this problem many many times ?

Power steering becomes inoperable

When the engine was started a ticking sound is heard, this has been happening for approximately 6 months. The ticking would go away after the engine was run for approximately 10 minutes. The truck now has 82639 miles on it and the ticking had gotten worse. I took the truck to the dealer, Dallas Dodge they reported that several of the exhaust bolts/studs have broken (confirmed 6) and the gaskets and the bolts needed to be replaced. My concern with this issue is with an exhaust leak I am worried that this could allow carbon monoxide into the vehicle.

Chrysler (RAM) truck 2017 3.6 pentstar enjine 3.6L Oil Filter Housing Leak - vehicle has 50 k miles on it. vehicle oil has pumped out of the engine due to this faulty oil filter housing.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer and it was confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact was added to the waiting list. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

While traveling on a paved state maintained road at approximately 45-50 miles per hour, the driver side front tire on my 2017 RAM 1500 exploded. The condition of the road at the time was clear and there were no foreign objects laying in the lane of travel. Upon the tire exploding, I was immediately pulled left into the opposing lane of traffic. No injuries or crash were reported during this incident, however had my rate of speed been higher, lack of driving skills, or oncoming traffic, the results could have proved to be fatal. After finding a safe location off of the travelled roadway, I replaced the faulty tire with a spare. I observed damage to my inner fender liner as a result of the explosion. The tire has not been inspected by the police, insurance company, or the manufacturer. No warning lamps or other indicators provided notification of any problems prior to the incident. The faulty tire in question is Identified as a Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, P275/60R20. This tire is an original installation from the vehicle manufacturer and has been in service for 20,300 miles. This particular tire blew out in a straight line fashion across the tread section of the tire from sidewall to the opposite sidewall. This is the first time that I have ever reported a safety matter, however due to the unique circumstances of the failure of this tire, I feel that this matter should be investigated and this tire removed from service. My truck has been parked at a Dodge Service Center for three days. I've been told the suspension has failed and needs to be replaced. The cost will be approximately $4,000. I've never been in an accident. I've never used the truck to tow anything. I don't drive off-road. I DO perform regular maintenance before the recommended time/mileage. I use quality products (oils, filters, brakes, etc.). No 5 year old vehicle should have a failed suspension from regular commuter/family driving. The suspension has been finicky for over two years mainly occurs in the colder months. My friend owns the same model truck (can provide VIN if needed) and his truck's suspension failed after year one. Luckily, it was still under warranty but took multiple trips to the dealership and much hassle to fully repair/replace his truck's suspension. Prior to my truck's suspension completely failing rendering it not drivable, there were many times I was driving on the highway alone and sometimes with my family when the truck would drop lower than entry mode with no warning - a huge safety risk to passengers and cars around me. The truck would be moving at highway speeds with essentially no suspension causing it to bounce and wobble within the lane and over the line. My children are now afraid to drive in the truck. Please hold Ram-Dodge-Chrysler accountable. Please make them do what is right. Please issue a recall for the air suspension. They should fix the air suspension supplying a lifetime warranty OR r

Air bag light comes on from time to time wiggle some wires under the seat and light goes away,so I think it disables the airbags cause it says they need to be serviced, also engine knocks when start up the. Goes into a little knock after warm up, continues through driving all day some days worst then ever , weather it be fresh oil or 509 mike's down the rd , to 2000 miles down the rd, I think it's a manufacturer error
