Complete sudden unwarned engine failure nearly causing an accident. Necessitating an engine replacement. Subsequent issues with transmission programming and alternator necessitating alternator replacement.
2022 Nissan Rogue complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2022 record →
There is an ongoing problem with a fuel (gasoline) odor in the cabin. This most commonly occurs in a warm start situation, ie the car has sat for 15 minutes to an hour after driving. When the car starts there is a strong gas smell which does not dissipate for anywhere from 10 minutes up to 45 minutes. Strangely this seems worse when the vehicle has backed up prior to shutting down. This does not seem to be a problem when cold (sitting overnight or for 4 or more hours) at this point. I am concerned that this may result in a fire and the obvious issues regarding health concerns related to breathing gas vapor. The dealer says they are aware of the problem but they are unable to resolve it at this point.
My son and I were driving home and my 2022 Nissan rogue SV suddenly began making extremely loud banging and knocking sounds in the engine bay. We were traveling approximately 40 mph and did not hit any bumps. The following morning the vehicle was towed to the dealership for inspection and we were told that day that the engine would need to be replaced. While we did not get too many specifics from the dealership regarding the exact cause, it was related to some bearings of some sort and causing what is called rod knock. The vehicle remain at the dealership until a new engine , or new engine parts, could be delivered. Nissan's warranty covered the cost of the repairs since the vehicle only had roughly 15,000 miles on it when the incident occurred. I have not had the vehicle inspected by a third party to confirm that the entire engine was replaced or if only certain parts were. One of the technicians at the dealership mentioned that they had seen or heard whispers about several reports of this particular issue, which is part of why they were able to diagnose it so quickly, but couldn't confirm the exact cause of that engines failure. Prior to the engine failing, there were no warning lights or indicators present in the vehicle. The vehicle has received regularly scheduled maintenance at this dealership since it's purchase. This incident occurred on December 2nd, 2023. I took a video the night of the incident of the vehicle and the knocking sounds it was making , but I can't uplo
Strong odor of fuel when parked in the garage and vehicle is off. Nissan dealer can not find issue. VERY STRONG SMELL OF GAS.
On 3/25/2023 with less than 800 miles on the vehicle, the throttle got stuck. The cruise control was on but NOT activated. After passing a vehicle on a 3 lane interstate, the vehicle accelerated on its own to over 100mph. I hit the cruise control button to turn it off, but the car continued to accelerate on its own. I hit the brake to slow down and try to get it to shut off (thinking if was a cruise control issue), but every time I lifted my foot off the brake pedal, it would accelerate to speeds of 90-110mph. I continued to brake about 7-8 times, then I heard a loud "kurplunk" in the engine, and it stopped. It continued to drive normally for the rest of the trip. The Rogue was taken to the dealership and checked out. I was told the "floor mats got stuck on the gas pedal and not to drive with both the carpeted mats and the rubber mats in the vehicle." I told the service manager this obviously was not the problem and there was a bigger issue, and that did not explain the loud sound coming from the engine. Upon leaving the dealership that same day on 3/30/2023, I accelerated to get on an onramp to Interstate I35, and the RPM stuck at 3200 and would not go down. The engine roared. It was in Sport Mode, so I switched the vehicle to Standard and the RPMs dropped to 2000-2100. I circled back around and went back to the dealership and had the female servie manager ride with me. The engine continued to roar at high RPMs, and the service manager said this was "normal." We returned to
235/60R18 tire size I bought a new 2022 Rogue March 2022 which only now has 14,000 miles.During regular maintenance on 1/13/24 , I was told I needed new tires because of tread wear.Nissan said they do not give tire warranty and Hankook would be responsible. After looking at BBB reports, there are quite a few others with similar or same issues. Blow outs, knots or baldness on tires. If these tires don’t last even 2 years or past 14,000 miles,I consider them defective in some way and certainly a safety issue. If Nissan has complaints and still continues to use this tire they are to blame as well.
I was caught in a snowstorm, driving about 5 MPH. Suddenly, the vehicle swerved to the left and I lost complete control; the brakes locked up. The vehicle spun about 145° degrees before coming to a stop perpendicular to the road; subsequently rear-ended from behind. The moment was surreal; I’ve never felt closer to a life-threatening incident because I had ZERO CONTROL over the car: I was spared ONLY because there was no oncoming traffic. My biggest concern is why the safety systems failed to intervene. During the incident, the ABS did NOTHING. Traction Control, NOTHING. NO warning lights came on. It’s mind blowing that the car skidded about 145° degrees without any intervention from the ABS and Traction Control systems. With modern 4-channel ABS and advanced Traction Control (Vehicle Dynamic Control) safety systems, the car should have attempted to correct itself. Because I was at a standstill, I was braking the entire time; I didn’t jam the brakes or steer the vehicle. To make matters worse, the car was in Snow Mode AWD. One hypothesis is a glitch where Vehicle Dynamic Control won’t operate in snow mode to give maximum engine performance. But at the cost of reduced safety and traction. Or perhaps the safety systems are not working as intended. The emergency brake malfunction light occasionally comes on when idling and several malfunction messages once during a long trip. However, these were sporadic and did not appear before this incident. Moreover, the maintenance person a
Have been smelling gasoline inside the vehicle. Everytime the heat is turned on it smells terribly like gas.
I have had my car in the service center 5 times for the same reason they tell me it is fixed but the problem keeps happening. I have tried to be cooperative . the car has been in the shop on and off since the 18 of July at one point they had it almost a month. This last time they gave it back to me said it was fixed. This is why i'm writing to you I had the car a week and I was driving on interstate 65 I was in the middle lane doing 70 MPH with a tractortrailer on each side of me starting up a long hill with another truck coming up behind me, when my car dropped down to 40 MPH since I knew what was happening I put on my emergency flashers, thank God the truck driver behind me was paying attention because he was coming up behind me pretty fast because of the hill He slowed down and moved over to block the slow lane so I could get over I had my 2 granddaughters in the car with me, and things could have been very bad if the trucker behind me had not been paying attention My Granddaughters and I could have been killed. Now I am afraid to drive the car the dealership told me to Call Nissan hot line and tell them what happened Nissan said they had something else to fix and my car would be fine, well now I'm afraid to drive the car and Nissan said they didn't have to do anything else to help me. I put 20,000.00 down on this car so I could keep my payments down. and now I'm stuck with a car I'm afraid to drive. am a [XXX] Grandmother trying to take care of my 3 Grandchildren on a fix
I uploaded the same letter I sent to the Nissan Manufacturer. Please view letter on Uploade files. Thank you
Jiffy Lube reported PLASTIC oil pan and plug broke when removing plug for draining. Manager at shop reported he had seen this before in another Nissan and he believes it is a common problem with the plastic oil pan. Internet search of forums describes similar problem and that replacements are the mid-$400s, just for parts, not labor. Sounds like a recall is needed.
On 6/27/22 we were driving roughly 35 mph and all of the sudden the warning light Engine Malfunction Power reduced Service now warning light came on and the car immediately slowed to 20 mph with no warning. It was a Sunday so we couldn’t take it to the dealership that day. We turned the car off and in about 20 minutes turned it back on and the warning light had cleared. We took it to the dealership the next day. Since the car only had 14,912 miles assumed the warranty would cover. They didn’t find anything but still charged us $168.53. Then on 8/30 it happened again while backing up. Called Nissan and they instructed me to turn it off and back on. I did but it still had the warning light and reduced speed. I was roughly 30 miles from the dealership and they wanted me to drive it in. I told them that wasn’t safe. They said at my expense have it towed. After the car was turned off awhile it cleared and went back to normal. I took the car in the next day. Again they said they couldn’t recreate the issue and had no solution. They indicated Nissan knew there was an issue but didn’t have a fix yet. They said it might mean a new engine. I filed a complaint with Nissan asking for them to buyback the car because I felt it wasn’t safe. They denied it. If at some point you are driving 70 mph on a 4 lane interstate in busy traffic and it happens and the speed reduces from 70 to 20 with no brake light coming on or warning to the driver. It could be catastrophic. On various complaint sites
On 8/9/2023 I went to my mechanic for a routine oil change. The prior oil change was done by the dealership where I purchased the car, Hgregg Nissan in Delray Beach, FL. When the mechanic opened the drain plug, the threads and assembly all came out, rendering the oil pan useless. If this happened on the highway, the results could be catastrophic. The dealership said whoever did the prior oil change may have over tightened the plug. The dealership had done the prior oil change. The oil plan is plastic, and problems with it are cited on internet forums. Nissan USA will not even cover the cost to replace the damaged oil plan under its warranty. My car was under warranty with about 16,000 miles when the incident occurred.
The front sunroof on a 2022 Nissan Rogue Platinum blew out while traveling on highway at normal speed. There were no warnings. The car dealership has ordered replacement parts to repair the sunroof glass. They said they had not heard of this and tried to blame it on a rock but the remaining glass is at an upward tilt. It was taped that day.
There is a constant fuel smell around the car when parked (and with the car off) which is present for several hours (and sometimes overnight) after operating and shutting off the vehicle. In addition, there is a gasoline or fuel odor observed inside the vehicle when running in stop and go traffic or sitting at a stoplight for an extended period of time. I have had the Nissan dealer review the problem on two separate occasions, they claim that Nissan is aware but that there is no fix available to them. Also had a fuel system issue (indicator light came on) that was addressed by the dealership.
After owning the car for about four months, the car smells like gasoline. The smell of gasoline fills the cabin and if parked in the home, the whole house smells of gasoline. My children get sick if they have to be in the car for more than 45 minutes. Nissan of Boulder claims that the fuel system is working fine, but it is not. Other owners of 2022 Nissan Rogue are experiencing the same problem without any remedy or recall from Nissan corporation.
I am joining the many others in reporting a very strong fuel order (raw gasoline) that enters the cabin and when parked in the garage, spews tons of raw gasoline fume, which I believe could eventually cause fire/explosion. This makes the SUV very difficult to be inside and drive. We do have the 3cyl turbo engine. Current mileage is approximately 3200. Dealer reports unable to verify and cannot proceed due to the SUV being in "engineering status".
While driving in traffic I proceeded to give the car gas to move 2 car lengths forward but the car jerked back and then accelerated on its own. I applied pressure to the brake and as the came up off it the car accelerated again. I swerved off the highway and once in park the car continued to have high rpm of 3.5 while in park. Keep in mind i had been driving the car for over an hour so it wasn’t cold. After the vehicle was towed to the dealer, the tow truck driver experienced the same thing with high RPM.
I have leased this vehicle since May 13, 2022. Soon after taking delivery, I started to notice a faint smell of gasoline every day when it is enclosed in my garage. The smell has been getting stronger and I am very concerned. There have been times when I can now smell the gasoline when I enter my car when it has been parked outside. I did take it back to my dealer and informed them of my concern. They told me there was no viable leaks and said Nissan is aware of the problem but there is no fix at this time. My dealership has tried to assure me that the vehicle is safe. I have gone on Nissan Rogue owner forums and many owners have the same complaint but no resolution. This morning the smell of gasoline in my garage was very strong. How can this be safe for my health and for the risk of fire?
After driving the vehicle, we’ll notice a gas smell coming from the car when parked in the garage. There is no leak or any issues with the vehicle running. Sometimes the odor is minimal and sometimes very strong. Nissan has reported awareness of this and is looking for a fix.
Smell of gasoline inside my car while driving and when parked inside my garage .Brought to the dealer and said to me that the are many car owners of the same model who are complaining of the same problem but they cannot fixed it at this time and will just call me if they will find solution of the problem but until now the dealer haven't call me back. The problem is getting worse and it is a significant fire hazard in my car and also in my garage.
3/21/2023 Rear crash warning went off and car would not move leaving me in the middle of the road blocking both lanes of traffic. Car eventually permitted me to go forward however crash warning continued to blink. It’s recorded on Video the flashing warnings. Had the car at dealer for recall of Head unit on 11/16 and has been back 3 times since and Has not been repaired. On Approx2/62024 I had a critical Error appear on my screen and the ABS took the car from 70 MPH to under 40 on the highway for no reason. On 2/7 I was called to Bring the car back to dealer and was given a rental car for over a month, there was a firewall repair and fuel line repair. Still no head unit with no ETA! From my understanding head unit will hopefully fix sensors from randomly going off. Dispite having video of it happening, Nissan can’t duplicate so warning issues are not repaired. The car is dangerous but have no other means of transportation and it can’t seem to get repaired because they don’t have the parts yet still have the parts to continue to produce them.
Vehicle smells of strong gas smell in the cab and around the vehicle. Smell is so strong it makes you feel light headed and gives you a headache. This is a huge health concern for me. When parking in the garage it smells so strong that you have to then park it outside for a couple hours after driving so you do not have a fire hazard in the garage. Took it to the dealership to have diagnosed and was told that they can't find a problem however now I'm see reports that Nissan is aware of the issue and it is under engineering review but there is nothing they can do at this time. I then reached out to Nissan consumer affairs which was absolutely no help at all. This is a huge safety and health concern for me.
I smell gas inside my car. I take the car to the dealer they check everything but they say they can’t fix it. They know about the leak and they say it’s hopping on the Nissan’s 2022 and 2023 . They know about the problem with those cars but they still sell sold them to the people.
I was driving and no one was driving near me and the sunroof exploded with a loud bang! I pulled over and it was shattered .
Gas fumes leaking into cabin. Garage smells like gas when vehicle is parked there. Nissan has no idea what causes this.
The vehicle has a very strong raw gasoline smell after driving. The smell is very noticeable both outside and inside of the cabin. This condition is becoming more frequent the more it’s driven. The odor is strong enough to make the driver lightheaded and nauseous. The vehicle was purchased new. Dealership is unable to diagnose and Nissan corporate continuously refers this issue back to the dealership.
I currently drive a 2022 Nissan Rogue SV, purchased in New Braunfels, Texas. When traveling downhill, when applying the brakes the engine studders. I brought it to the dealership to have it checked out, after inspecting multiple points on the vehicle including the brakes, transmission, alignment no such issue was identified as the cause. The technician test drove the vehicle, able to recreate the issue. The technician called Nissan to describe the problem and was informed that this is a known issue when braking downhill.
There is a very strong gas smell in the cabin coming through the vents. Opening windows doesn't help as it is outside the vehicle as well. It smells like gasoline is actually covering the vehicle. Causes nausea & ightheadedness. Worried for health from breathing in the fumes and fire risk. Nissan service changed evap canister and problem persists. I bought the vehicle brand new and is an unresolved issue.
I purchased my new 2022 Nissan Rogue a few months ago. I do not drive a whole lot seeing as I am working from home. Yet I have noticed on many occasions that after going out and running my errands, I come home and park in my garage and my garage smells of very strong gas fumes. Yesterday I brought my car in to the Nissan Dealership for its first oil change and the service attendant asked me how I was liking it. So, I brought it up to him about the strong gas smell in my garage after driving car. He informed me that this is not the first time that they have heard this. He said they are researching at this time but have not been able to locate the issue. He stated that they were thinking it was the winter gas and I said no way. If gas was the issue, why is it only the 2022 Nissan Rogue having an issue with the gas. Makes no sense. He stated there is no recall on it yet seeing as they cannot figure out the issue, but I will most likely be seeing a recall once they figure it out. They noted on receipt that "they were unable to duplicate concern, no fuel leak at fuel lines or tank. Nissan is aware of issue and seeking a remedy, customer will be notified." This is very scary to me, it is a strong smell, like there is raw gas leaking. I am afraid of it catching fire or just the fact of inhaling these fumes are not safe. This is a huge safety hazard and Nissan does not seem to care. Are they waiting for something horrible to happen before they take this seriously?
Unknown Very strong gas smell inside the vehicle and outside the vehicle and under hood. This started with less the 4000 miles on it and it is just over 6200 miles at this time. I brought it to local nissan dealer lia nissan of Saratoga and was advised they can not find anything wrong with it and they can not do anything without a recall. So I am driving a vehicle around with excessive gas smell inside and out. This seems dangerous to me. I did express my concern to both the dealership and nissan themselves and they still refuse to do anything. I asked what happens if I am in an accident and my car starts on fore or if I am driving and my car starts on fire. The service recep. Said well it looks like you will have a law suit. So don't think they realize this is not good. Breathing in gas is a health issue and this should be addressed and should not be ignored. These vehicles had gas issues the year prior so why isn't this a concern for nissan. This is a new vehicle smelling gas is a hazard and puts myself, my family and people driving around me at risk. Please consider reviewing this further. Thank you Jill Tracy
There is a strong smell of gasoline in the garage after I park my Rogue in it. We can smell it in the house. There is also the strong smell of gasoline in the cab when the car is idling, like when waiting in line or at a stop sign. This is not exhaust, it’s fuel. I’ve had it checked once already during an oil change and am taking it back again tomorrow. This can’t be safe to my health. Am also afraid it will set my house down on fire. Please help.
Radio control system which includes backup camera, stopped working. Manufacturer isn't providing replacement though they admit the part needs to be replaced.
We bought our 2022 Rogue in September 2022, it now has around 5300 miles on it. In December, we noticed that every time we drive it, the inside of the car fills with gas fumes. The fumes are so strong that it gives us extreme headaches, dizziness and nausea. When we park the Rogue in our garage, it creates a strong gas smell. We are concerned that it could explode or cause a fire. The vehicle was taken to Ron Sayer Nissan in Idaho Falls, Idaho on February 4, 2023 for diagnosis. The service manager, [XXX], informed us after examining the vehicle that he did not know what is causing the strong gasoline odor. The dealership did nothing to repair the vehicle and the problem continues. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Gas fumes from engine compartment – after the car has been driven 20-30 mins enough to heat up the engine and then parked (turned off) for 10-15 minutes a strong smell of gasoline is detected, you can smell it either by sniffing in the front grill or if you start it and use the outdoor air circulation in the cabin it will come through the vents. There are enough fumes to fill a 1 car garage in 30 mins with a thick odor of gasoline. The fumes are nauseating and cause headaches. My salesman at Hawk Nissan suggested changing gas to a top tier brand so I starting using Mobile but no help with the fume issue. After speaking with a service manager at Woodfield Nissan, he said that he’s had a few cars come in recently with the same problem. Nothing is showing up mechanically so they chalked it up to a “break-in period” and/or possibly a coating used in manufacturing. Brought it back to Woodfield Nissan a couple weeks later stating the oil dipstick has a strong smell of gasoline same smell I get in the cabin and around the car. He found nothing unusual with the oil smell. I took it into Hawk Nissan Oct 2022 with 800 miles now with 2943 miles still having the issue. Not sure if this is affecting my MPG but I'm only getting 18-20 MPG mix of city & highway driving. Recently I'm seeing a lot of the same complaints with the 2023 models.
Gas smell after driving. Dealer replaced EVAP canister valve but still fills my garage with smell
My Vehicle has 3,700 miles on it and i have smelled a very intense fuel smell in the cabin of the vehicle at least 6 times mostly when the interior fan is not set to recirculate the air, i took the vehicle to my local nissan service center and they could find no issues but said this is a complaint that others have also made. I am concerned that there could be a fire from the fumes that are being released.
After 9 months of owning this car. When I drive for 20 or so miles and turn the vehicle off for a short period then restart I smell gas and fumes make me sick and my eyes water at times. The dealer found nothing wrong. Nissan corporate got involved after I emailed them. Their engineering tech confirmed it was happening.
There is a strong unburied fuel smell on occasion. The dealer says that they are waiting for Nissan engineering to provide a repair and that it would be ok to drive.
The gas pedal in my new 2022 Nissan Rogue has stuck open full throttle twice. Both times I managed to avoid a major car accident, but I was in the middle of a highway with traffic... I was in the left hand turn lane and pushed the gas pedal to the floor - the vehicle immediately seemed to be full-throttle in LOW gear - this is a problem with this vehicle. It slips into low gear about 20 percent of the time when you put it in D. the engined raced but the vehicle moved slowly. I took my foot completely off the gas pedal but the gas pedal stayed fully engaged. I pushed on the brake and managed to stop the vehicle with the engine still racing and the vehicle still trying to lunge forward. I tried to put the vehicle into neutral but it bypassed neutral - even the dotted indicator transmission light bypassed neutral and jumped into reverse. the car lurched but i still had the brakes fully engaged... this continued with me again tryying for neutral - then I gave up and concentrated on taking one of my 2 feet off the brake and reaching under the throttle. I had to slip my seat belt off and slide down to accomplish this. I did manage to do it and the gas pedal did disengage. I estimate the pedal was stuck and the engine revved full throttle for four minutes or a little longer. My son was outside the vehicle (waiting for me to pick him up) and he witnessed this from outside the vehicle. This is obviously very dangerous and could be deadly. In my case it could have caused a major multi-
For roughly the last three months, several times I have smelled fuel or gas in the interior cabin. Mostly at startup for first time during morning. But also when starting car after use earlier in the day. The smell dissipates after 10 minutes or so. Especially if I roll down windows to let in fresh air. Please let me know how address because dealer will not see issue as it does not occur with a defined pattern that I recognize. I did notice that when the gas tank was near empty the smell was very strong - and I was driving car for several minutes before the odor started. This issue is not healthy for breathing and I’m worried about it getting worse and becoming a safety issue.
There is a strong smell of gasoline a few minutes after parking the vehicle in my enclosed garage. The smell is strongest on the drivers side, near base of the windshield and along the left side of the hood. This problem occurs every time I drive the vehicle more than 20 mins and then park it in an enclosed garage. 10 mins after parking it, the garage smells like spilled gasoline. I took the vehicle at 2,200 miles to a dealer and they stated that they were unable to duplicate the problem. They asked me to return the vehicle at 5,000 miles if I still had the problem.
Vehicle has raw fuel smell, both outside and inside. Smell intensity varies, sometimes it is faint, sometimes it smells up the whole garage for days. When restarting the vehicle after having driven it, fuel smell comes into the cabin from the air vents. Took to dealer multiple times. The first time, the Service Advisor noted the strong fuel smell. Subsequant visits to the dealer had faint fuel smell that was hard to detect over the typical odors in a repair shop. Opened a case with Nissan, and they sent a tech, but no resolution. Requested a re-purchase, and Nissan denied it. Nissan states this 1.5L engine is under Engineering Review, but they do not know if or when they will figure out a repair. This vehicle is an extreme health hazard with the exposure to hydrocarbon vapors, and is not safe to drive as an engine fire could result from the gas vapors. Issue started a month ago at 1100 miles.
For several weeks I have noticed strong smell of gasoline when my car is parked in my garage. Today, I called my Nissan dealer because I am very concerned. The service advisor informed me that they have received many similar complaints and Nissan is supposedly trying to identify and remedy the problem. He said my car is safe, but I am terribly concerned.
My car smells gasoline inside and outside.I brought the car to the service dealer but the service manager said that they cannot figure out where gas odor coming from.I am using my car in bringing my 2 kids to school and going to work.My kids are getting sick and I am afraid my car will cause fire.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
