2022 Mitsubishi Outlander complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2022 record →
There is currently a service bulletin out for the hood to be replaced because it flutters on the highway, I purchased the vehicle pre owned at 61,000 miles, Mitsubishi won’t cover the repair because it’s over 60,000 miles, I feel like this is a safety concern as the hood flutters on the highway and I have 2 small children in the car most of the time one is an infant , they are trying to charge me $3,045 for the repair when it was the fault of Mitsubishi. I purchased the car preowned from Chrysler dodge jeep ram at 61,000 miles and there service department told me several times it’s normal and it’s fine, I finally brought it to a Mitsubishi service center and they told me about the issue. This should not have a warranty to be covered for repair it should be a recall , I’m worries the hood will pop open on the highway .
While driving down the highway at 70 mph, my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL suddenly shut off without warning, causing the entire dashboard and instrument cluster to go dark. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle unexpectedly braked on its own, decelerating from 70 to 0 mph in an extremely short distance. This abrupt stop nearly caused an 18-wheeler behind me to rear-end my vehicle. Thankfully, the truck driver was able to swerve just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. The situation could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. During the incident, all power to the vehicle was lost. The brakes became unresponsive and impossible to press, and the steering became extremely difficult to control, making it nearly impossible to maneuver the vehicle safely. This is the fifth time my vehicle has experienced this issue, with the past three instances almost ending in serious accidents due to the car’s complete failure to respond. After a few seconds of total power loss, the vehicle inexplicably starts back up on its own and operates as if nothing had happened. Despite this recurring and life-threatening malfunction, the dealership has been unable to identify or fix the problem after four repair attempts. Each time, they’ve tried different fixes: 1. Initially, a software update was performed. 2. Next, the ADAS controller was replaced. 3. Then, the body computer was swapped out. 4. Now, they are attempting to replace a power distribution system. Even after these n
As far as the engine, I received two different dashboard notification icons about engine issues. However, they both disappeared suddenly. Now, my car is starting to stall at random times. I looked to see if my car had a recall and it says my vehicle was not effected. But I'm wondering if it as. Also, my front collision warning is malfunctioning. There is a malfunction warning label on the dashboard.
I only had my car 6 months, this is second set of tires I have put on it and it the back ones right off. Also the hood shakes and wobbles while driving the vehicle down the road. I have consulted a lawyer because the rear suspension was fixed once with only 19,000 miles on the car.
When parking error messge comes up on my vehicle took it to dearlship and stated because of a scratch on my front bumper is causeing my rear parking error code this happen after the software upgrade they did
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander that I financed through your bank. Since purchasing the vehicle brand new in 2022, I have encountered numerous issues that have caused significant inconvenience and concern for my safety. In the past two years, my vehicle has experienced multiple problems, including: 1.Randomly Shutting Off: Last year, my car began randomly shutting off. The dealership attributed this to sensor issues and claimed it was due to me pumping gas while the car was on. Despite this explanation, the problem persisted, and the mechanic only reset the computer system without fixing the underlying issue. 2.Fuel Pump Issues: Recently, on August 11, 2024, my car stopped working for several hours while I was with my daughter. I replaced the battery at a cost of $300, but the problem recurred the next day in traffic. After extensive delays and towing, the dealership identified a fuel pump issue, which is covered under the powertrain warranty but not the connecting parts, costing $1500 each. 3.Safety Recalls: I discovered that the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has several recalls related to faulty fuel pump wiring. Although I was initially told my model was not affected, the dealership later confirmed the fuel pump issue. Additionally, the hood of my vehicle was not welded correctly, causing it to flutter and posing a safety hazard. Despite bringing my car to the dealership last year under the original warranty, no effective repairs w
The issue with the car involves a problem with the steering gear box. The grease between the rack and support yoke seat has thinned, leading to increased friction during steering. This causes the support yoke to drag along with the motion of the rack, resulting in contact with the rack housing. As a result, a clunk sound and vibration are felt when turning the steering wheel, especially after the car has been stationary for a while. This issue is causing a loss of power and control while driving, making the vehicle unsafe. The recommended fix involves replacing the steering gear box assembly and recalibrating the steering system. The service report ID is: TSB-24-37-001
There is very loud squealing noise coming from front tires when backing and driving forward. It gets extremely loud when turn the wheel in motion. Dealership claimed they couldn't fix it.
The battery in the key fob died. Upon attempting to turn the car on, the car completely shut off. Nothing works and is completely blacked out as if the battery is dead. Jumping the car with jumper cables rebooted the system but the same thing will happen ONLY when the battery in the key fob dies.
The warning light starts flashing to alert me it is not active, this happened periodically but the dealer was unable to see it happen. Saw it happening so I went to take it to the dealer but didn’t notice the car in front of me due to the flashing light taking my attention and hit the car in front of me.
Persistent issue where the vehicle will loose all power to brakes, engine, instrument cluster and infotainment. This issue has almost caused 2 crashes out of the 3 occasions in which it has occurred. When the issue happens all power is lost as if the car were rolling in neutral while off, no indication of what is wrong or anything of the sort. It happened on the highway going about 65 mph, was able to steer (without power steering support) into the emergency lane as the car dramatically dropped speed. The brakes were also not being supported by the booster so it was extremely difficult to push the pedal, thankfully it was on a bit of an uphill. Put the car manually into park after it stopped, and by itself the car restarted, although some of the cluster components and infotainment components were very slow to restart. The next time this happened was in slow traffic, once again the car shut off with no warning of any kind. Once I managed to get the brake pedal pushed far enough for the brakes to engage, I managed to stop the car within a foot or so of the person in front of me. Once again, I put the car in park and it was able to restart on its own. Both times it has been to the dealer, Don Herring of Plano, and as helpful as the service advisor is, there is still no solution in sight as they keep changing electrical components left and right. I am worried about the car becoming a rolling ball of metal that I cannot stop one day. I hope Mitsubishi figures this problem out, oth
I was driving with shade closed and AC on for around 4hours since 6am from Alexandria - Lousiana. When I arrive in Dallas - TX I decided to open the shade from my sunroof glass and less than 1 minute as I open i heard and noise like a small explosion and saw a hole in my sunroof glass. The glass start to crack. Same moment I closed my shade and reduce my speed. I was 6 minutes from my Hotel. When I stop the car I saw that sunroof glass was in direction from inside to outside the car. Looks clearly that the explosion happened from inside to outside the car. I called to Mitsubishi Road Service and they sent a tow truck to send my car to Don Herring Dealer. After 3 days Mitsubishi called me and told by according pictures it was a rock that hit my glass and broken and they dont have nothing to do. Don Herring Dealer in Texas and Sport Mitsubishi in Orlando both of them assume that dont have any real evidence that was a rock because the glass exploded direction it was to up - showing that happened from inside to outside. I went to Safelite Glass company too and they told the same. As it is tempered glass must be broken in small pieces completely or total fallen inside the car. This looks like when I open the shade and because inside the car was too cold and outside was too hot had some thermical shock and sunroof glass not hold this situation.
As I was parking the parking sensors didn’t engage to say I was too close to another vehicle causing me to side swipe the other vehicle! I thought it was just me but still 4 days later anytime I park the sensors don’t alert me as being too close! The forward and reverse emergency brake system is not engaging as it used to do!
While driving or coming to a stop, the engine will shut off, the infotainment system will reboot and the car needs to be stopped, put into park if it hadn't done so and turned back on. It does this randomly and because the dealer cannot recreate it, it constantly gets ignored. We are not sure why this happens but it is extremely unsafe.
I was driving and my car brakes suddenly then all of the lights came on and the vehicle shut down. Once I got the vehicle back started the malfunction light stayed on and is still on and it says to contact your nearest dealer in which I did and was told I would receive a callback and I am still waiting on the call. It has been over 5 hours.
I had a bent right control arm, this was replaced in the dealership with out of pocket payment on February 12th 2024, same issue above reoccurred and the dealership is asking for the same sum to be paid out of pocket. Mitsubishi motors customer complain refused to assist that I had an accident with the car. I believe this is a defect because, I never had any accident, As of now, the right control arm got broke on the street without any impact… kindly look into this. Thank you
On a windy day or a regular day once the car get to about 45 mph or higher the hood begins to flap, bounce, vibrant as if it is going to fly open. As if the wind is getting under and getting ready to take it away.
The car has a rapid war of rotors and break pads. The car inspected authorized dealer ship and they mentioned this is a very common issue on outlanders as the rotors, calipers, and breaks did not properly design for the wight of the car. It seems the manufactures and authorized dealer aware internally form the defect but do not take necessarily actions which may cause safety issue to owner of this make and model. After the dealer inspected the car i asked for the report but the dealership made all the report unavailable online and said they cannot provide any document
Radio is goin off and on
Rack and pinion broke in half. Several people on forums complain about this problem. Had it happened on the highway it would have caused a serious accident. Thank goodness it happened backing out of my driveway.
My left front passenger wheel low tire warning keeps going on and off saying the tire has low air. I have been to the cherry hill Mitsubishi dealer had it check they stated the tire was fine. I am putting air in this one tire every three to four days. Now the air will stay in the tire for 3 to 4 days then it goes back to saying low air pressure. If the dealership tells me the tire is fine nothing is wrong clearly something is wrong with this ONE tire.
Driving minimum speed of 65mph and upwards the hood is flexing and fluttering. It appears as if the hood will become unlatched at any moment. Windy conditions make it worse. It is incredibly scary to drive not knowing if the hood will suddenly become unlatched
While driving, my moonroof window exploded. It was not struck by debris. I stopped to observe the damage and the glass was bubbled up and appeared as if it were pushed up. I took photos of the damage.
The contact owns a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle was unstable and drifting to the left and right. The contact stated that the failure was more evident at faster speeds and during inclement weather. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.
Mechanics said when they replaced the engine coolant an air bubble entered the line and caused the module to fail. The car overheated when I got on the interstate 5 minutes after leaving the dealership.
Hood flutters
The hood has fluttered since I bought the car on 7/29/21. I brought the issue to the dealership's attention, but they denied hearing any other complaints. While I was waiting at the dealership for an oil change, I was talking to other outlander owners, and they expressed the same concern. I also have an issue with the front Collison senor. Since day one, the sensor will disengage in direct sunlight, fog, and rain, making the feature useless. Once again, when brought up to the dealership, I was informed the case this was a one-off and they had not heard or seen any issues reported to Mitsubishi. And as of today, it appears my alternator has gone out.
Since May 2023, I've been to two different dealerships with the same issue. It started with a whistling sound form air vents, buring smell, increased has consumption, loss of power going up hill, gas smell inside cabin, no air, loud noise from right side of car under hood, and engine malfunction warning. Finally, 12/12/23 the car, without warning, instantly stalled, shut-off in traffic. Several vehicles behind me had to swerve to avoid rear end collision at it was it happened in front of a school with heavy traffic! The car would not restart and had to be towed to dealership. I contacted Mitsubishi corporate office in Aug/Sept, and was assigned Bernedette, who, constantly confused and incoherent, dismissed my complaints as dealerships wouldn't fix bc Mitsubishi wouldn't reimburse. She stated if there was no code, the car could NOT be fixed! In total, both dealerships have had my car for 30 days or more. Currently, Edwards Mitsubishi, has had my car since 12/11 as back ordered part was hard to obtain. I want to go to mediation for Lemon Law in IA, as this car poses a serious threat to myself and other drivers. Mitsubishi is negligent and duplicitous by issuing erroneous and loose guidelines regarding repairs/recalls when vehicles owners present with problems known to Mitsubishi, especially 2022 Outlanders having fuel pump issues. I still can not get any assistance on the shaking hood!!!!
I had a wreck 12/05/2023 the rear ended a commercial truck it didn’t give me any indication ahead it didn’t not slow my vehicle down or brake I just slammed right into the vehicle 23 feet in front with no warning so now the truck is saying crash malfunction it just abs and lane change in dictation nothing
I have a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander that I purchased July 26, 2023, from Ciocca Subaru of Philadelphia with a 100,000 mile/24-Month Dealership Warranty, an Extended Warranty in addition to the Manufacturer's Warranty, Ciocca Dealership Promise Warranty, Tire Warranty , Service, and Collision Care Program Warranties. The control arm broke as I was coasting in the parking lot of the supermarket on Wednesday, November 22nd, right before Thanksgiving. I was told on Friday by the Ciocca Subaru Dealer of purchase that the repairs had to be completed at a Mitsubishi Dealer, and told that it would not be covered in any of the warranties. Previous Mitsubishi Outlander's have had faulty/recalled control arms also. The vehicle was towed to Montgomeryville Mitsubishi at 1011 Bethlehem Pike, Montgomeryville, PA18936. To date, no one has looked at or egun repair and they refuse to provide a loaner vehicle. In the 4 months that I have had the vehicle, it seems that the fuel system is faulty also. The car will cut off when the vehicle shows 60 miles of gas remaining in the vehicle, which the vehicle is not on E (Empty).
I purchased a brand new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander on March 3rd 2022, and 25k miles in I am experiencing rear braking issues. I took my Outlander in to the local dealership at 247 El Cajon, CA 92020 on 9/6/22 for an inspection, because my vehicle was making very loud screeching noise every time the vehicle went into reverse (without even touching on the brakes). Initially I thought something was wrong with the wheels, because the noise was happening without having to press on the brakes. Upon inspection, I was told that my rear brakes were at 2mm and needed to be replaced, along with resurfaced rotors. My front brakes are good, but my rear brakes have worn down, and causing a screeching noise. According to the service manager at the dealership, the noise is not exactly the brakes itself, it is a sensor pin that begins to scratch along the rotors once the brake pads start to ware down and needing to be replaced. This vehicle has never been driven out of state! This vehicle is driven in town taking my kids to and from school, and for pleasure and errands. I am not a heavy driver or braker. There is absolutely no reason why a brand new vehicle is already needing rear brakes at only 25k miles. I have done some research both online and by calling around to a few different Mitsubishi dealerships, and I spoke to Joseph in the service department at Victorville Mitsubishi; I told him my issue, he asked how many miles I had and he quote on quote told me, "You are one of the lucky ones,
Ok button on steering wheel got stuck in while driving and it turns off all anti collision systems.
The dealer and corporation will not do repair/service to make the key-fob starter functional so the vehicle can be unlocked and the engine started. The vehicle is unusable making it a safety hazard The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. The component has been inspected and worked on by the dealer. No warning lamps or messages, the problem appeared when starting the engine.
While driving the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander at highway speeds the front hood flutters very badly. Causing myself stress that the hood will fly open causing a very concerning safety problem or accident.
This letter is about a recent use car purchase, the car is a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. I purchase the car on 19 April 2023 at Mitsubishi Dealer located in Commerce California, I paid cash. The sale went OK until I ask for a second key-fob as my wife will be the second driver. I was told they didn't have a second key-fob and one would not be supplied because the vehicle is sold as is. I was not pleased about this as I paid more than $38609.00 cash for the vehicle. I pushed back, the dealer would not relent. I purchased a key-fob at Mitsubishi Redondo Beach California, I was told that the key-fob would have to be paired to the vehicle and that would be billable. I was really angry when told this, but had it be done anyway. My feeling was I paid a lot of money cash and I was being treated like my money didn't mean anything now that they have it. I spend four hours at Mitsubishi Redondo, I was told that that could not pair the key-fob because they didn't have the updated software. I was told to go back to Mitsubishi Commerce and have it done there. I return Mitsubishi Dealer located in Commerce California to have the key-fob paired. I spent more than four hours waiting for the repair. I was told that the newly purchase key-fob was defective, and to return the original dealer for replacement. I went back to Mitsubishi Redondo Beach California for replacement key. I was told that it would take about a week. I waited two weeks and never got a response, I called the dealer to get an
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander under 34000 miles. Front wheel bearings gave out. Mitsubishi services stated they are defective and Nissan parts. They replaced them under warranty. All 4 manufacture tires are worn out at 34000 miles. Had another computer issue. ABS Warning came on while driving. Took took Mitsubishi service, they stated a module had to be exchanged. Again car is fairly new. Under 34000 miles.
The gas meter to read how much gas you have isn’t reading properly. When the car gets down to 60 miles to e the entire car shuts off.
Upon idling this vehicle reeks of fresh fuel. It has been reported to the dealer and they have re-produced the problem. However, they do not know what is causing it. I am worried about the smell of gasoline in my car. I am worried about the car combusting and I am worried about respiratory problems or health issues that may result from the constant exposure of fuel or gasoline fumes . The dealer is reporting to me that corporate office has been notified and is working on a solution however, they do not tell me what the solution is or if they can even identify the problem. I am only told that I am on a waiting list for a repair, and that many people are complaining of this problem. Where I live in Yuma Arizona, the summers get to 114°, and while this may exacerbate the issue it is not the cause and the smell of raw gas can be noted Even in the winter months. I first had the vehicle into the dealership on July 2022 for this problem. This is an ongoing, unresolved problem, and I am worried about my safety as well as the safety of others . When I first noticed the problem and brought the vehicle in, I received paperwork documenting the problem and the service report. The service department will no longer provide me paperwork proving I was there for a repair. They understand that this could be applicable to the lemon law.

The hood flutters and bounces up and down the entire time I'm driving making me too anxious to drive the car at all. I just bought the car used with 21,000 miles yesterday and noticed it after leaving the dealership to drive home. I have an appt for weatherstripping on 7/24.
The contact owns a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated that when the vehicle was purchased, the contact received one key fob and the contact was informed that a second key fob had to be purchased. The contact purchased a new key fob however, the key fob could not be programmed because the software was a manufacturer-only software. The contact was concerned when the software update would be available. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 14,300.
The contact owns a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal clonking sound was coming from the vehicle while turning the steering wheel. The contact stated that the sound was heard while steering to the right while in drive. Additionally, the sound was heard while steering to the left with the vehicle in reverse. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
While backing out of my driveway, the rearview camera did not function properly and there was a collision with a dumpster in the neighbor's driveway. This resulted in the shattering of the back glass and the reordering of the entire back lift gate of the vehicle.
Purchase 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander fall of 2021. Took first trip of over 200 miles on Highway. Noticed that speeds of 60 MPH or over, the hood vibrates(badly). Took to local dealership was told Mitsubishi aware of issue, and in the works to correct, and most likely recall to replace hoods. Just took in this week June 2023 to local dealership. Asked again about Hood issue. This time was told Mitsubishi not aware and no fix available or in the works. My concern is I travel a lot on major highways at over 60 MPH. What happens if hood flys up when driving 60 MPH. The hood would fly back break windshield, cause Death or serious accident. And that worries my wife and me. Dealership hasn't done anytime to ease my concerns

P255/45R20 These tires from the date of purchase hydroplane at 45mph or more in mere light rain or a standing small puddle causing me to leave the road until it catches and then sends me the other way. it is very dangerous. I called Bridgestone they said no known issue and there is nothing they can do ref 1398758 spoke to mark. I contacted the salesperson several times he also agrees this is a known issue with other cars with these same tires, and stated he himself bought one and had to buy a new set of tires right away. This was a brand new car. This should not be happening. I am terrified to drive my car in the rain. Not to mention I can't and never have been able to leave the driveway in any snow or ice. But the rain? I have almost had it towed home several times on the highway during light rain due to being petrified. There is something wrong with the tread or something here

The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,892.
Hood flutters badly when passing oncoming traffic. Specifically trucks. Sometimes it blows up about an inch or more and I fear it will come loose and open eventually.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
