This is the second time this year one of the doors refused to open. In May the front passenger door would only open if outside handle was jiggled a few times. Two weeks ago rear door behind driver refuses to open at all - from inside or out! I have small children and this is a safety issue!! I’m terrified either the kids or I will become trapped in an emergency or other unsafe situation. In additional to the emotional impact of this is the financial. The interior door panel - which is plastic - most likely will break and need replacement. Vehicle needs to be in shop for nearly 2 weeks. I can’t trust this vehicle and will never buy this brand again. In the interim a safety recall needs to be initiated. I would not want to dump this unsafe vehicle on someone else with children or elderly people they transport. PLEASE DO something soon!

My car has been having engine problems causing it to stall while driving. It won’t go past 20miles per hour even if I press on the gas FULLY. This has been happening on and off for a couple of months now. It also burns thru my oil change in less than a week. I took my Hyundai into the dealer multiple times because of the way it drove since 2019 and they always sent me away saying that it was normal. But this car has been a constant stress in my life. Driving it has felt dangerous. Something is definitely WRONG with it and I’m not sure why this recall on the engine now powering up hasn’t hit yet. Death trap of a car.

Hello, I have a serious problem with my Hyundai Tucson 2017 which is excessively burning oil. An oil change has been done on December 26 2023 (125.600) and a service was due 3 month later (3.000 miles) to perform an oil change but when I went for the oil change on March 26, 2024 at Jiffy Lube, they noticed that there was no oil in the engine and no leaks and suspected that the vehicle might burn oil and the performed a full synthetic oil change (service due after 7500 miles) and after 2800 miles on May 17, 2024 when I checked the oil level, I couldn't see any mark on the stick. I brought them the car and they checked if there was any leak then they filled up the engine. I was monitoring and on June 15, 2024 after 780 miles the level was below the minimum level. I bought a Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil 5W-30 and filled up the engine up to the maximum level mark on the stick. 2 weeks later, on June 28 I noticed that the oil level was close to the minimum level again. I booked an appointment at Hyundai dealership at Gaithersburg, MD and they refused to check the vehicle without a payment. I paid for the diagnosis and 2 day after they ended up saying that the vehicle is burning 1 quart every 2660 miles (which is below what we observed) and they asked me to pay $1235 for a combustion chamber cleaning to which they added it might not work. I am submitting this request for you to solve this safety problem on my car. Thank you

There are two issues. Acceleration failure while driving and excessive oil leaks that require continually adding oil to the engine. Yes, it is available for inspection on request. The acceleration failure is a safety risk and does put others in danger when I cannot accelerate when needed. For example, entering a freeway. The car has stalled and cut out going only 15 mph. This never happened while stopped, just as I was accelerating from a stopped position. I cannot get on roads where the speed limit is above 50 mph because the car will not go over 50 mph. The manufacturer has inspected these problems. Charged me to correct them, and a month later the problems returned. NO warning lights, or anything, at any time.

On [XXX] my 2017 Hyundai Tucson check engine light came on on [XXX] in Atlanta. Just moments afterward my car began to reduce its speed. It was not driving nearly like it should. My exit was approximately 4 miles from when the check engine light came on. At my exit car started vibrating, I did not think I was going to make it through the light. Even though my car was not driving right and the check engine light being on I did not want to stop and be stuck on the side of the road. I was headed to my daughters house about 2 and half miles off the interstate. With my emergency flashers on I made to her subdivision. As I proceeded up the hill it would not go, it started going in reverse. Needless to say I was starting to panic. My son in law was the first car to come, he told me to turn the engine off and restart. That didnt help. So he got in my car and put in Neutral. We were a few yards from their house. Tucson currently has 98,000 miles on the engine and is burning extreme amounts of oil. Oil consumption issues became known as early as 75,000. Per 1,000 miles of driving, the Hyundai dealership notes the car is losing over 2 quarts of oil. I have been having to return to the dealership every 1,000 miles to be monitored. I have already had to pay replace my catalytic converter, which I believe was a result of the excess rate of oil burn from the engine. I have also had to pay to replace the oil gaskets in the oil pan even though there was no noticeable sign that the engine was leaking oil. I am now being told I am going to need to have an engine head cleaning repair that will take several days. Once that is complete, I will have to undergo continued oil consumption testing to determine the results. They are requesting I produce my service records or Hyundai will not cover the repairs. Almost all of the service on this vehicle was done at the dealership and I was never notified of any issue with oil consumption. A separate mechanic, while performing a quote, did an oil change and noted the car was completely out of oil. This engine is well known for its oil consumption issues and Hyundai does not seem to want to take responsibility for their defective engine.

6 June 2024 - Sudden severe loss of engine power while driving, presenting potentially serious safety hazard in traffic situations. Check engine light illuminated during incident (not blinking). Driver was able to pull to side of road and shut off car, then after 2 attempts car re-cranked. Driver was able to crank and drive 5 miles home. Check engine code P1233 stored & retrieved by scanner, indicating fuel pump issue -- (potentially a low pressure fuel pump leak similar to Hyundai TSB 23-FL-004H?), which may present fire hazard from leaking fuel. Visual inspection of high pressure pump in engine bay - no noticed problems. Visual / olfactory inspection of area around gas tank - no noticed problems or smell of fuel, no indication of leaking. Briefly cranked engine, no noticeable leaks or sounds. No check engine light (though P1233 stored).

The car would hesitate to accelerate causing the engine to rev high and then take off. It had gotten progressively worse with no error codes detected. With a lack of code, nothing could be done. My daughter was not comfortable driving the car due to the fact it had gotten so bad so I was driving her to school. While going 50 mph the engine started to rev high then completely died with no error or warning. I was able to coast off safely, however an inexperienced driver may not have been able to do the same. A recall needs to be issued ASAP before there are more serious consequences.

Engine has been burning through oil fast, requiring me to add oil every couple of weeks. 2 difference service places have told me this and also told me to contact Hyundai to file a complaint, as many other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons have recalls out for the same reason. This could cause an engine to fail if oil burns all the way out without my knowledge - safety hazard for me and others on the road. Car also sputters and struggles to accelerate at times, which has been an issue since getting the car in 2020. Please consider recalling to fix said issues.

Had had the vehicle approximately four months (purchased at Irwin Dealership in Laconia, NH) when the vehicle would not start. It was rendered non-functional. It was “repaired” in February 2023. When picked up in Feb after Irwin dealership in Laconia, NH had had it for almost 3 wks, they told me it had carbon buildup. It had only been driven about 4,000 miles since it had been purchased on [XXX], 2022. They changed the oil (oil changes are recommended every 5,000 miles). It died again on [XXX], 2023; again it had been driven less than 4,000 miles and was not yet due for an oil change. It has been there since. They (Irwin) wanted service records, I told them all I had from prior to purchase was the carfax, and that they had performed the only service because I hadn't driven it long enough to have even had a second oil change. When Irwin submitted documents to Hyundai, they indicated the issues with the car were due to neglect and poor maintenance. Hyundai refused to replace the engine citing that I had failed to provide service records. The car remains at the dealership, despite payments being made on a vehicle that can not be used. I religiously come into a auto repair shop for oil changes. Well before my next scheduled change, my engine started to make thumping noises. I filled up the engine with oil before taking it in to the auto body shop. The shop informed me that the engine needs to be replaced. They also informed me that this seems to be a recurring issue with Hyundai's and that a lot of owners are experiencing high oil needs for their engines. Neither my check oil light or check engine light notified me that there was low oil before the damage occured on my engine. I have filed a report with Hyundai as well and am still waiting to hear back from them.

The engine sustained a crack and oil was leaking out of a cylinder. Initially thought to have been an oil problem since the check oil light would come on. Vehicle was taken to a dealer where they determined it was a bad cylinder. They did not have the correct tools to get into the block so they kept the vehicle for over a month. They returned the vehicle back and shortly after the issue started to happen again. The engine was knocking really loud and cannot accelerate over 40 miles an hour. We took it back to the dealer where they determined that it was a faulty engine and had requested all of the oil change and maintenance records. This vehicle had been taken back to the dealership on multiple occasions for routine maintenance. Talking to the maintenance technicians they could not find any record of us taking the vehicle there mentioning that the dealership had changed hands. We had records from oil changes at one other location but the dealership deemed negligence for the engine failure. This is about a three-year-old case and car was ay 109,00 miles

There's a known leak with oil in the engine, this was brought to the dealers attention and they said it was a known issue however no fixes were avaliable. While driving on the highway without warning I lost accelerator access. The car wouldn't go. The engine started knocking and would not propel forward. It was advised after diagnostics were done that two of my cylinders lost compression and therefore the engine was blown. They said this is a highly known issue with Hyundai Tucson 1.6T engines. I've lost money, time and work behind this ordeal.

I am writing to report a serious issue with our 2017 Hyundai Tucson. As the first and only owners of this vehicle, we have diligently maintained it through authorized dealerships. However, in May 2023, while driving on the highway, the car suddenly lost power and would not accelerate beyond 30 mph. There were no warning lights or indications prior to this incident. My wife managed to pull the car to the side of the road and slowly drove it to the dealership. Despite having only 30,000 miles on the odometer from personal use, we were shocked to learn that the engine had suffered significant damage due to low engine oil. Notably, we had recently serviced the vehicle at the same dealership just a few months earlier. The dealership informed us that the engine needed replacement, but the process took nearly a year. During this time, we were left without our vehicle, causing considerable inconvenience and financial hardship due to renting replacement vechile . We find it concerning that an engine failure occurred despite our regular maintenance and adherence to authorized service centers. We kindly request an investigation into this matter and hope that steps can be taken to prevent similar incidents for other Hyundai Tucson owners. Additionally, we urge Hyundai to address this issue promptly and transparently.

We purchased a 2017 Hyundai Tuscon in April 2023 with 79 k miles. Realized after a short time that it was consuming too much oil. Started doing some research and found that this has been a problem for many Hyundai/Kia engines. We were checking the oil often and topping it off as needed plus, oil changes at 3000 miles. There were no check engine lights on and no leaks of fluids on the ground, no loss of power. Fast forward to March 2024. Driving down the interstate on a trip the engine just shuts off. Luckily my daughter was able to make it to the shoulder without getting hit by another car. The vehicle would not restart. I started looking for someone to tow the vehicle a State Trooper stopped to assist her and her passengers. Vehicle was towed. Mechanic charged the battery, checked the terminals, tested the alternator, and the belt. All were good. No idea why it just shut off. After charging battery for an hour, she was able to limp the Tuscon to the nearest dealership. The vehicle started losing power going uphill and regained speed on the flat areas on the way to dealership. The Hyundai dealer diagnosed the issue as leaking valve seal, oil soaked ignition coil causing the misfire which then started to plug up catalytic converter and fouling the spark plugs. I told the service person I will be contacting Hyundai and she said that the diagnosis did not qualify for the engine replacement and the estimate to repair was $5600. While we were there we checked into trading in. We p

On March 9, 2024, I was driving when suddenly a warning light sounded from the dashboard that the engine "overheated" and there's a loss of power. I was very scared driving for the first time in my life. Before I pulled over to a safe place, a driver nearest to my car pulled his window down and shouted that my car was smoking. I was terrified. This incident triggered my husband's mental health conditions. I called my niece who is a registered nurse to help us. I called my car insurance for towing to the next dealership that I called about what happened. After I rented a car, I went to the dealership. However, the Service Department was closed after 4:00 pm. The next day (Monday), I received text messages that they're working on my car and the only communication was "text messages." I was stunned! The next message was transmission problem, the cost of repairing it, and authorization to fix at $1,581.40. Because my rental car was not cheap and needed a car to doctors and other appointments made on that week, I agreed to proceed. After I signed the authorization from text messages, I got a call from a service advisor to acknowledge the cost of the repair. I asked about the engine and he said it's okay. By Wednesday afternoon, I received a call that my car was done. Before this incident (2 weeks?), I called the same dealership when it's time for an oil change, but was told at 72,000 miles. Campaign 209. Hyundai is refusing to provide assistance under recall campaign 209 for our VIN. Our vehicle has premature rod bearing failure causing engine failure. Rod knock noise. My wife drives the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. This year in June 2023 our vehicle check engine light came on for knock sensor. Soon after the vehicle started having acceleration issues, then the oil pressure warning light would come on and off. The vehicle oil level was checked, and we learned the vehicle oil level was low. The vehicle was through burning oil. The vehicle had burned through a quart of oil with no explanation. Our VIN # for our vehicle indicates there is an active recall Campaign #209 for Rod bearing issues with our specific model and VIN. Our specific vehicle and VIN when entered into Hyundai’s website reflects active recall. We took the vehicle into Red Mccombs Hyundai Northwest to have our vehicle evaluated. Red Mccombs submitted a PA to Hyundai for engine replacement. They denied coverage stalling vehicle is no longer under warranty but made no mention of active recall. We got Hyundai Consumer Affairs involved and had same result with denial stalling vehicle is no longer under warranty. We then brought up recall #209 explaining we are having all the same issues they list on their website for this active recall. Dealer refused to look at rod bearings stalling we would have to pay for them to inspect rod bearings. Hyundai consumer affairs had us take it to another Hyundai service dept.

Bought this one (~80K miles) ~Oct/Nov 2022 from a local dealer as a used car (I was the 2nd owner). The oil light was on when I drove it ~1500 miles. I was surprised and went to shop to do my first oil change. I thought probably that the last oil change they just did not top it up. Unfortunately, after it, I noticed that the oil consumption was much quicker than it's supposed to be and required me for oil change more frequently. On 10Feb24 (it had ~97K miles), the car started to vibrate when I started the car. I noticed a "green/blue" fume came out when I stopped/started from a traffic light. On 12Feb24 morning, I drove it to a local dealer, the ~3 miles ride became a horrible experience in my life. The car is shaking and making a terrible noise, the "green/blue" fume busted out, felt no power and could barely maintain ~30MPH speed. It's like you were driving something that going to be exploded. You pictured it. It finally reached the dealer site and I felt the car has delivered its last breath. Thanks GOD that nobody got hurt. Dealer took a look and told me that it would cost $4000 to fix it. I googled this problem and found that many people experienced the similar problem (excessive oil consumption/engine failure). Therefore, I strongly urge that Hyundai and NHTSA take proper measurement to identify the cause and prevent future disaster it may have. For Hyundai, I strongly urge you to read all the complaints on this type of vehicle (2017 Tucson AWD) through NHTSA platform.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
