The contact's wife owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. During frequent oil checks, the oil on the dipstick was low soon after an oil change. The vehicle was taken to the dealer approximately 15 times for oil consumption issues. Several oil consumption tests were performed on the vehicle for every 1,000 miles driven; however, the results varied from normal to low oil consumption. The engine had been partially disassembled twice, and pictures were taken and sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer approved a combustion chamber cleaning to be performed on the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The contact had spoken with the manufacturer several times and was provided a case number. The manufacturer ultimately denied the request for an engine replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 63,547.

While driving on the interstate at highway speed, my 2017 Hyundai Tucson lost power without any warning lights or prior symptoms. The vehicle experienced an immediate loss of propulsion while I was traveling in traffic, creating a dangerous situation because surrounding vehicles were also moving at highway speed & I had to quicky maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder with no power. The vehicle had approximately 73,861 miles at the time of the failure. After the incident, the vehicle was taken to a Hyundai dealership and diagnosed with a burned exhaust valve requiring replacement of the cylinder head & valve. The estimated cost of repair provided by the dealership was approximately 7550. The vehicle had no prior warning lights or symptoms before the sudden loss of power. A sudden engine failure resulting in loss of propulsion at highway speed presents a serious safety risk to both the driver and surrounding traffic. This was an extremely dangerous failure.

I purchased this car from drive time, and when told about a possible recall on the engine i asked about it. We were told that the issue had been resolved. Not even 10 minutes after driving it off the lot the engine started misfiring, we had done a test drive prior to purchasing this vehicle and nothing had popped up on the dash about any problems. We have been unable to get it looked at. I was not sure if a report should have been filed until now. i am unable to produce photos at this time

Car engine seized and lost ALL power going 60mph down the highway at night with my child in the back seat. I have poured quarts and quarts of oil in this vehicle because it burns oil at an alarming rate until it eventually runs dry and the engine seizes. This is extremely dangerous and luckily my child and I were able to drift to the side of the road without harm and injury. Very discouraging that there are thousands of these cars and engines on the road that can literally seize up at any minute. Maintenance was performed and kept up with. The Oil pressure light had been flashing when the vehicle turned but was flashing even when oil had just been changed. These engines are dangerous and have people in a financial hard spot. I still owe $16k on a car I can no longer drive and that Hyundai is saying due to owner maintenance will not get an engine replacement. The Facebook group Hyundai Oil Consumption test has thousands of people dealing with the same exact issue on these cars and engines.

Purchased used via Carvana in Sept 2025, check engine light came on while driving it home indicating a pre-existing mechanical defect. We submitted the claim through Silver Rock (Carvana's warranty company) and brought to their approved mechanic. The recommended the following repairs, several that were denied by Carvana/SilverRock: spark plugs, alternator, serpentine belt, fuel injection service, electrical ignition coil. A month later check engine light illuminated again and through further diagnostics the mechanic found that 2 of the faulty spark plugs were an incorrect model/fit for our vehicle and reported that information which resulted in replacement being approved (a month after initial request). Fast forward to January 2026 we experienced the widely reported knocking noise while driving coming from the engine and had it towed. The damage is a thrown rod and damaged bearing, which is consistent with the current oil consumption litigation, requiring engine replacement. Our 2017 Tucson 1.6 L turbocharge is not included in the recall. Furthermore, Carfax report shows last oil change reported was 2023. Carvana confirms an oil change is part of their 150 point inspection before a sale, however unable to provide me with documentation and failed to report a record of the work to Carfax. There are many instances of negligence on Carvana's part from failure to provide record of maintenance, which is also failure to adhere to their standard policy, and declining recommended serv

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle lost power, decelerated, and the check engine warning light started flashing on and off. The vehicle was parked on the left shoulder of the highway and later driven to the right shoulder with the assistance of a State Trooper. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer, who diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (ENGINE). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 66,000.

Wheel stiffened up and was scary and difficult to lane change to a slower lane or attempt to pull over at 11:00PM due too safety and could not pull over for over an 1 hour until I was home safely. Had to hold the wheel tightly for an hour. It was very difficult to turn and enter my double wide driveway and took 3 times to get car straight enough and pull in without Power Steering. Turned vehicle off and I had looked into possible issues with the (EPS) Electric Power Steering and read possible loss of Power Steering check MDPS Fuse in vehicle Interior Fuse Panel for blown fuse and all was Fine with that Fuse.. Then checked MDPS Fuse Panel in engine compartment near battery and found no issue on the long circuit fuse for the MDPS. After researching 2017 Tucson EPS issues I ran a test by Turning Key on and turn Wheel all the way too Right and leave it there for a minute then turn wheel all the way too the Left and leave there for a minute ,then turn steering wheel till wheels are straight and turn key off. Then start car and see if Power Steering comes back when turning steering wheel in which it did but I'm still skeptical if that was the Fix. Following the knock sensor detection system update, this car has a P1326 code that forces it into limp mode. Occurs during moderate-hard acceleration, e.g. getting on a highway. The car is limited to ≤2000 RPM and ≤ 45 mph, and rapidly decelerates to that speed if necessary. Acceleration is very limited. This occurs roughly every two weeks, despite having a brand new sensor installed by Hyundai. Hyundai has also allegedly performed cleaning on the sensor and related parts. This has been going on since November, when the recall that installed this update was performed.

The vehicle has a transmission (powertrain) malfunction that first appeared in July 2025, a few weeks after I purchased the vehicle and after the warranty had expired. At the time the issue began, the vehicle had well under 80,000 miles. The transmission slips, fails to properly engage, and cannot provide sufficient power, particularly when accelerating or driving uphill. The vehicle struggles to move forward and behaves unpredictably during normal driving conditions. This defect has put my safety and the safety of others at risk. On one occasion, the transmission failed while I was driving and I became stuck in the middle of an intersection, unable to accelerate, creating a serious traffic hazard. The issue has been reproduced consistently and has persisted despite repeated transmission fluid services. Multiple mechanics have inspected the vehicle and have indicated that the problem is not due to lack of maintenance, but instead is likely caused by the transmission not being properly filled with transmission fluid at the time of manufacture. Despite servicing, the problem continues, indicating an internal or manufacturing-related defect. I have also been in contact with multiple owners of the same make and model vehicle who report the same transmission failure, suggesting this is a widespread issue rather than an isolated incident.

Am submitting a safety complaint regarding my Hyundai vehicle due to repeated engine power loss (limp mode), excessive oil loss, and a denied engine recall replacement. I initially brought my vehicle to the dealership after experiencing engine power loss/limp mode, engine oil loss, and illuminated check engine warning lights. The dealership confirmed that my vehicle was covered under an engine recall and stated that the recall procedure was completed. As part of this process, the dealership performed an engine combustion-related service and charged me approximately $1,600. After this repair, I drove the vehicle for approximately 1,000 miles. When I returned the vehicle to the dealership, the vehicle entered limp mode on the same day it was brought in, and the check engine light was illuminated again. The dealership advised me that the vehicle had lost an excessive amount of engine oil during the 1,000-mile period. Due to the continued engine issues and oil loss, the dealership requested a full engine replacement under the recall. However, Hyundai denied the engine recall replacement request. The vehicle’s repeated loss of power, excessive oil consumption, and limp mode create a serious safety concern, especially while driving at normal road speeds. I am concerned that the recall remedy was ineffective and that the denial of an engine replacement places drivers at risk. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter for potential safety defects and improper handling of a known

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds or accelerating from idle, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine. While accelerating from idle, the vehicle failed to exceed 30 MPH, requiring that the driver slowly accelerate and gradually increase the speed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with transmission failure. The mechanic replaced the brakes and tires. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the muffler assembly and catalytic converter related to the failure to accelerate. The failure persisted, and the vehicle was returned to the dealer, who confirmed the noises coming from the engine while the accelerator pedal was depressed, with a burning odor, and oil issues. After five visits to the dealer, an oil leak from the drain plug was determined. The drain plug and oil pan were replaced a year and six months later. The vehicle continued to fail to accelerate properly, making it difficult to drive uphill. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, Niagara Hyundai of Grand Island (1910 Alvin Rd, Grand Island, NY 14072), who confirmed that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The catalytic converter was replaced again but the failure persisted, and there was no engine oil in the vehicle. While driving 65 MPH, the vehicle started shaking. Issue was first noticed in October 2025 - there are roughly 70k miles on the vehicle. It is a 2017 vehicle, and has regular service (oil, inspection). There was a class action lawsuit for this issue (wylie v hyundai), which was settled prior to the purchase of the vehicle. Vehicle stutters when shifting into and out of first gear. A local mechanic and hyundai both confirmed that it was a transmission defect. The Hyundai dealership initially thought it was an actuator issue, but has since said that it is a faulty gear assembly. it has a DCT (dual clutch transmission). Vehicle suddenly stops and is erratic when driving. Coming out of a stop risks the vehicle shuddering; going through an intersection or turning cross traffic is extremely dangerous as the vehicle could stop momentarily and cause a collision. Vehicle is unable to maintain flow of traffic. The problem appears to be widespread - there are various forums we found where others have this same issue. There were no warnings on the dashboard prior to the issue. When issue appeared a check engine light was displayed.

I purchased a CPO 2017 Hyundai Tucson in June'22 and brought it in for engine stuttering, the car stalling in intersections and was told they couldn't duplicate the problem. I emailed and brought the car in again and still noting was rectified. I've made the oil changes, changed spark plugs, flushed the engine in July and got new oil and everything looked at and in October the engine seized while my husband was driving to work: no oil lights on no engine lights on. Neither Hyundai or the extended warranty will help. My VIN didn't come up in a recall but there's too many problems with other 2017 I would hope they'd look again and help their customers.

I’m submitting this complaint to report what appears to be a serious safety-related engine issue in my 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport 2WD with the 1.6L DI Turbo engine [T-GDI GAMMA]. I’m aware of NHTSA Recall 21V-727, which covers 2017 Hyundai Tucson models with the 2.0L engine for premature engine bearing wear. The symptoms covered by that recall are nearly identical to the symptoms my vehicle is now showing. My VIN shows no open recalls or service campaigns on Hyundai’s website, but the problems I’m experiencing match those found in many other consumer reports for this same year, make, and model. My vehicle has only 80,000 miles and has had regular maintenance. Examples include loud knocking from the engine that rises and falls with RPM, and metal shavings in the oil. One complaint that reflects the same pattern can be found in NHTSA ID 11680114, which describes engine knocking and metal debris with no warning lights or alerts. My vehicle has also shown no warning indicators. These issues pose a safety risk because they can lead to sudden engine failure while driving. Based on the volume of similar complaints and the overlap with the existing recall, I’m concerned that the defect may affect more than the engines currently covered under 21V-727. I’m requesting that NHTSA review this matter and determine whether Hyundai should extend or expand the recall to include vehicles equipped with the 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport 2WD 1.6L DI Turbo DOHC 4cyl. Please investigate this issue and h

The 2017 Hyundai Tucson I owned had the engine FAIL (internal bearing failure) rendering the car basically worthless. Hyundai has multiple recalls on this type of engine. My car had 120,000 miles when the engine failed. Hyundai REFUSED to offer ANY assistance on this, fully knowing that these engines have had thousands of problems in Australia and the US. This is a problem they KNOW exist and they are doing nothing!!!! They need to admit the problems and help consumers when this happens instead of trying to WEASEL out of any responsibility. Thanks.

I am writing regarding a serious incident involving negligent automotive service performed by Jiffy Lube Store #687. On October 24, 2025, I took my 2017 Hyundai Tucson to this location for a standard oil change. I trusted that the service would be completed properly and safely. However, on November 21, my vehicle’s oil lamp unexpectedly illuminated. Concerned, I returned to Jiffy Lube on November 22, where employees informed me that they had “sealed the small leak and topped [my] oil,” adding that I was entitled to two top-offs between oil changes and “should be good for two weeks.” Tragically, the very next day, November 23, the oil lamp flashed again. My vehicle then shut off while I was driving, with my children in the back seat. This was a frightening and dangerous situation for all of us. I am now left confused, stressed, and unsure of the full extent of the damage.

Component/system: Engine / powertrain – excessive engine oil consumption. The original engine is still in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. On 11/7/2025 my dealer (Ourisman Hyundai in [XXX] ) added 2 quarts of oil at 90,999 miles after the dipstick showed a very low level. After that visit, we drove approximately 713 miles (mostly highway, including a college visit trip), and the oil level again dropped close to the same low point on the dipstick. On 11/22/2025 at 2:10 PM, with mileage at 91,815, the dipstick again showed a significantly low oil level. I am concerned that this abnormal oil consumption could lead to sudden engine failure or loss of power while driving at highway speeds, putting my family and others on the road at risk. This vehicle is used regularly for my daughter’s college visits and everyday transportation. The dealer has acknowledged the concern, previously performed a combustion chamber cleaning on 8/11/2025 (Invoice #XXX), and has submitted a request to Hyundai for assistance. However, a formal oil consumption test or official diagnosis has NOT yet been completed, so the exact cause is UNKNOWN. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, and Hyundai Motor America has opened a case, but there has been no final decision or repair yet. There have been no warning lamps or messages on the dashboard; the only symptom has been repeated, excessive oil loss between visits, verified by multiple dipstick and odometer photos. My 2017 Hyundai Tucson is experiencing severe oil consumption, which appears to be related to a known manufacturing defect affecting Hyundai engines from this period. My vehicle is burning through oil rapidly between normal oil change intervals, and it has begun showing signs of low oil levels despite no external leaks. This creates a serious safety concern because the engine can fail without warning. The dealership has acknowledged that excessive oil consumption is a known issue for this engine but refuses to provide assistance because I do not have “enough oil change documentation” over the years. However, this issue is not caused by lack of maintenance — it is a widespread internal defect that Hyundai has issued multiple technical service bulletins for. My car has been maintained, and oil changes were performed at regular intervals, even if I do not have complete paperwork. The rapid oil burning is ongoing and dangerous. I am concerned about the engine seizing, stalling, or failing while driving, which could lead to a crash. This is a safety hazard that should be investigated and included with other Hyundai engine cases. Requested Action: I am asking NHTSA to investigate this oil consumption defect affecting the 2017 Hyundai Tucson and require Hyundai to provide a remedy, including repair or engine replacement, regardless of perfect maintenance documentation, since this problem stems from a manufacturing flaw.

My Hyundai’s replacement engine, installed under a recall a little over a year ago, is now failing again. Hyundai’s service department was the only shop to ever work on the engine. There is visible silicone drooping from the area where the head and block were torqued down — a defect hidden beneath the engine cover that isn’t removed during normal maintenance. Hyundai Corporate acknowledged silicone use would be “shoddy work,” yet refuses further review, stating they’ve “never had a customer dispute something within 18 months later.” If Hyundai engines arrive sealed and shops don’t handle insulation, silicone should not be present. This may indicate poor workmanship or improper installation on recalled engines. I request NHTSA review this as a recurring safety and workmanship issue on Hyundai recall replacements.

Had an oil change on September 29th. The mechanic brought to my attention metal shavings in the oil and advised that I should get rid of the car because it won’t last much longer. It drove fine for a day until the next afternoon I was driving on the highway with my children and the engine started knocking loudly. The car stopped accelerating past 45 mph. I was close to my house fortunately but barely made it as it sounded like the engine would blow. It is now sitting in my driveway still knocking when I start it and don’t feel safe driving it anywhere. There were 0 warning lights. I was not aware of the engine issues these cars had until I did some research and looks like it’s very common. Seeing some people had luck getting replacement engines in the past and many others not. This needs to be addressed and Hyundai needs to be held responsible for the awful oil consumption issue resulting in failing engines. We should not have to provide proof of maintenance when clearly this is an issue regardless.

NHTSA Complaint – 2017 Hyundai Tucson Oil Consumption, Engine Defect, and Branded Title I am filing this complaint regarding my 2017 Hyundai Tucson, which suffers from abnormal oil consumption and engine problems. In addition, Hyundai Motor Company internally “branded” the title without disclosure, which voided my eligibility for warranty coverage. It only activates once oil levels are already dangerously low, leaving no safe margin to protect the engine. •On multiple occasions, I was unaware the engine oil had dropped to unsafe levels until the vehicle was already at risk of engine damage. •The engine makes knocking/tapping noises, hesitates under acceleration, and has rough idling when oil levels drop — all signs of internal engine damage that could lead to sudden failure while driving. 2.Hyundai’s Branded Title Practice •Roughly one year after purchasing from CarMax, I learned that Hyundai had internally branded the title in their own system due to oil consumption reported by the first owner. •This branding was never disclosed to me or to Ca

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson has been chonking out and having acceleration problems. I thought it was because of AC running. When I took it in for inspection my mechanic stated it was misfiring. I am meticulous about routine maintenance (I.e. tire rotation and/or replacement, oil change, inspection, etc), as well as whatever if any repairs are needed. I immediately reached out to my local Hyundai dealer but they never responded. It should be corrected by Hyundai and a recall issued. After researching the issue I see I’m not the only one with a problem. The 1.6 L engine should have been recalled because apparently the same turbo engine in the GDI model was. I have all my maintenance records to support my claim. Come Hyundai!!! I thought you stood behind your vehicles?????

My engine has been burning oil. The engine light has been on for just over the past year because an O2 sensor in the catalytic converter needs replacing, however, this is unrelated to the issue. The oil light started flickering earlier this year (approx 8 months ago) but would never stay on. I called my mechanic and they recommended I check the oil. Sure enough it needed oil. Since then I have had to continuously add oil in between oil changes, however, the oil light rarely comes on or flickers to indicate this need, I just need to check. The engine has been making a ticking sound and that gets louder or worse I have noticed as the engine burns the oil. I have read up on other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons having the same engine failures and that some are covered under recall but mine does not seem to be. My mechanic has informed me that the engine needs to be rebuilt in order to fix the problem. I am worried about the car dying on me or causing an accident because of the failing engine. Yes, this problem has been confirmed by my mechanic.

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6L Turbo (with 7-speed EcoShift DCT) has ongoing transmission problems. The vehicle hesitates, jolts, and sometimes fails to accelerate from a stop, which creates a serious safety risk when entering traffic or crossing intersections. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the Hyundai dealership in Fairfield, CT. They diagnosed the transmission and recommended a complete replacement at a cost of over $7,000. This issue matches the defect described in NHTSA Recall 16V628000 and Hyundai Service Campaign T1B, which involved the same 7-speed EcoShift DCT in 2016–2017 Tucson models. However, my VIN was not included even though I am experiencing the exact same safety defect. No warning lamps appeared before the hesitation/judder began. The safety risk is significant because the vehicle can fail to accelerate as expected in traffic, increasing the chance of a crash.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the hood independently unlatched, raised up, and shattered the front windshield. No warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was contacted; however, there was no recall associated with the VIN. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
