The car has intermittent hard upshift from 1st to 2nd gear. It feels as if the transmission seems to slip for a moment then jolts the car, making a hard bang noise and jerking forward, and at times spinning the rear wheels. If I stop the car, turn off the engine and restart it clears the issue. It does not throw off any codes. I have taken it to the Hyundai Dealer several times and they have verified it with me while in the car but since it does not give a code or warning lights they tell me they cannot fix it. Hyundai corporate has also been made aware. This started at 77K miles and has been occurring for the last 3 years. I have brought it into hyundai over a dozen times for the concern. I have several videos of the issue

My 2017 Sante Fe has recently started consuming oil at a very alarming rate. From doing research, there is ALOTA of hyundai owners having the same issue. There is no oil level indication light on the vehicle. Hyundai is aware of these problems. From what I have researched, this has been an issue since 2012. Every 500 miles, the car is short 2 quarts of oil. Did an oil consumption test with the crappy hyundai of metairie dealership. Hyundai immediately denied any work to be done before a physical inspection was even conplete. Now having to fight with the extended warranty people to try and fix the issue. Running an engine low on oil is dangerous! Not only because it puts us customers in danger of going bankrupt trying to pay the car off while having to pay for new engine that I'm sure will have the same issue, but also can cause break downs which puts the drivers and kids at risk for injury or death due to an accident happening while being broke down onside of the road. Serious thought needs to be put in about recalling these cars or engines or before hyundai continues to manufacture cars with this issue.

The vehicle suddenly shut down while driving and the wheels locked up. There were no warning indicators at all. The failure happened to occur on a residential street, but if at speed on a highway this likely would have resulted an an accident. Upon inspection at the dealership it was determined that a connecting rod bearing failed and the rod had created a nearly 3 inch split in the engine block.

Leaks no Lights on dash indicating check engine There are thousands and thousands of consumers online stating the Same happened to them. The majority state Hyundai will not replace or fix repairs because of numerious reasons. The biggest is that a recall was issued to reset a code. Since purchased new in 2017 original owner , I have not received any recal notices. So if a owner does not receive notice. How is it our fault further damages aren’t covered? Oil consumption issue. the car was eating 2-2.5 qts per 1,000 miles of oil. Over numerous 1,000 mile tests, it was confirmed my care was eating oil. The dealership did a combustion chamber cleaning, but the car still eats almost 1qt of oil per 1,000. I was actually told by a service advisor not to refill the oil and let the engine blow while I was driving it which is a safety issue. In my research there is a known oil consumption issue and I want Hyundai to replace my engine. I've been trying to get this rectified for almost 8k miles and am at 85K. I feel like Hyundai is trying to get me limp to 100K so my warranty is over.

My car's VIN has not been listed on the recall list for the engine, but the recall description is exactly what happened to me and my family while driving our vehicle. We have been going back-and-forth with Hyundai USA and BBBAuto for two years trying to get approval without any progress or success. We purchased our vehicle used with approximately 68k miles September of 2021, and the engine seized around 75k miles in February of 2022. Attached is the initial diagnosis reflecting the exact recall problem that happened with our engine. Hyundai confirmed the diagnosis when our car was towed there once they opened for business, but we did not receive approval for the engine replacement under the warranty. The car has been undriveable since as we await our VIN on the recall list as no one will give us approval that we've talked with about it. There is a Class Action in progress, but it has not been approved - meanwhile, our family has been without our car for years now. Any / all assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Something in the engine failed while driving 55mph on a state highway my vehicle started knocking. I have also noticed metal shavings when I checked the oil. I have had a local mechanic look at my vehicle and told me that I need an engine replacement. There were no warnings or clues prior to this happening. While highway driving a few hours from home, the car started shaking so I pulled over, turned the car off & called AAA. Prior to that, there were no warning lights or messages, until it died & the Check Engine light turned on. The car was towed to a Hyundai dealer in Wilmington, NC for diagnostics. They determined that the cause was a burned valve in cylinder 4 so it had no compression & the engine would not run. Their only repair option was to REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE. Given that the car was inoperable, we had no choice but to do that. After further investigation, we discovered that this company has a widespread issue with their engines & also has a class-action lawsuit for similar problems. Hyundai mechanics have told us that they know their engines are problematic & they replace multiple ones every day of the week. A Facebook Group with discussions about Hyundai engine failures was formed & currently has over 26,000 members! Many of their experiences are similar to ours & it puts drivers at great risk as their car randomly dies on the road during normal driving. Our engine failure did not specifically meet the criteria of their lawsuit terms (naming rod bearings as the cause of engines failure) so Hyundai will not assist with any replacement costs. As a 2017 model with only 103,000 miles, the car is relatively young, compared to other better manufactured brands, especially for entire engine failure. Hyundai Mechanics and Service Personnel have told us that is typical life

Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to Bell Road Mitsubishi (1901 E Bell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85022) where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were both notified of the failure and instructed the contact to tow the vehicle to the dealer. Our car started making noises and hesitating while revving engine to increase speed. Two days later we took the car to our mechanic. No warning lights. They test drove the car but apparently couldn't replicate the issue. Tried again and couldn't start engine. They thought it may be the starter. A new starter did not solve issue. They called us back and said the engine has locked up. It wasn't a safety issue as the car was parked but I assume it could have been an issue if we were driving it when engine locked up. We regularly change the oil. We have approx. 109k miles on the car. An engine should last longer than that.

I just bought this car with only 58,000 miles on it back in October. The dealership I went to pressured me into buying this car for $5,000 more than the Toyota I went in for. I had a bad feeling from the start, but I’m young and easily taken advantage of. While driving a couple weeks ago, taking my [XXX] son home from the park, a check engine light came on. (First light to ever come on since getting the car) I was worried and took it easy trying to get home. The car didn’t make it home , it stalled, then wouldn’t start again. I got it towed to Hyundai and found out the engine has seized. I’m devastated. I’m a single mother and couldn’t afford this car very easily to begin with. Now I’m stuck with a car that I won’t be able to afford to fix and a payment. Why is Hyundai allowed to make & sell unsafe vehicles? In December 2023 while getting a routine oil change, the mechanic told me there was no oil in the car but it was common for these vehicles. They told me to start getting it checked at 3,000 miles and having it topped off. When I went again in March 2024, there was again no oil. (I barely drive the car as I work remotely from home and rarely leave my house.) I called a mobile mechanic who came out and checked out the vehicle and told me it was probably the turbo out. I paid to replace the turbo. While driving in April 2024 the car suddenly lost all power and I coasted into a gas station. It refused to start. When the mechanic came, there was again no oil. After towing it 20 miles home, I spent the next few weeks replacing fuel injectors, spark plugs, and everything I could think of with no luck. Finally took it in to Hyundai and was told there was no compression in the 4th cylinder and a new engine was going to cost me $8650. The engine barely has 117k miles on it and everything else is in excellent shape. There were no warning signs ever that my car was low on oil, never any indication anything was wrong in the 5 years I have owned it until suddenly it breaks on me out of nowhere. Now I find out, after buying a $40,000 vehicle, that this is common for these vehicles and Hyundai is doing nothing about it.

The engine has an oil consumption problem. In early April, the oil crankcase was empty between oil changes. I change the oil religiously every 5k miles. In early April, the engine had zero oil and examination showed no leaks. The key safety issue is that no engine warning lights came on. The only reason I discovered the issue was because I noticed it was not running properly and took it to my local Goodyear Service Center who confirmed. The engine could have very easily seized up while I or a family member was driving putting us in real danger of an accident. The issue has been confirmed by the dealer - they are WELL aware of this engine oil consumption issue. One Hyundai dealer inspected the car and tried to tell I had two leaks - valve cover and oil pan gaskets. Both my Goodyear Service Center and a SECOND Hyundai dealer confirmed I do not have leaks (and I pics to prove it). The second Hyundai dealer acknowledged the oil consumption issue and told me to bring the vehicle back if it does it again. They want to charge me $700 for a "compression chamber cleaning" that works 20% of the time! No warning lights - nothing. I only found out because of the way the car was running. It would go into limp mode and not accelerate. That's how I knew something was wrong. There is a Facebook group for this issue and multiple class action law suits. Hyundai refuses to accept responsibility for this engine defect. I asked the service manager at the dealership and he said Hyundai has not add

While traveling to work about 1 mile before my exit, my 2017 Santa Fe Sport Ultimate 2.0T started sputtering and losing speed. I was scared to death traveling on a major highway (Rt 1). Terrified of tractor trailers and cars flying off the exit, I called the State Police to come as my protection from getting hit .While waiting, two Good Samaritans were concerned for my safety and stopped to help move the car partially out of the road (no steering). The state police arrived and waited while I got a tow truck seeing I was visibly upset. I later received a call from the auto shop telling me the engine was gone, The performed a compression test the next day, found no compression in cylinder 3. 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2.0 purchased brand new on July 2016. A month ago with 73322km mileage, engine failure occurred on the highway. First, I heard a rattling sound, then car started to shake, engine light blinking, oil change light went off (which never) happens, and the car started to decelerate on the highway. Upon finding the next exit, as I was turning right at the lights, car shut off completely. Went to the nearest Hyundai dealership which was within 2kms. The car was moderately drivable up to the dealership, and was advised that it is unsafe for continuous use. The dealership's diagnostics were: piston or 2nd cylinder was not compressing and spark plug burned. Hyundai Streetsville, Mississauga advised me to pay $8000 for a new engine or sell them the car. Had the car towed from this dealership to my local dealership Schlueter Hyundai in Waterloo. Their diagnostics were: Vehicle has dead miss, cylinder #2 pulled plug and bore scoped cylinder found piston melted around the edge causing no compression. The car started making a very loud knocking noise while driving and became un-drivable due to the engine knocking and sputtering. Safety was compromised due to not being able to safely drive the vehicle the appropriate speed as this began suddenly. The car was taken to the dealership where the determined that it had rod bearing failure and the engine needed replaced. There is a recall for the same make, model, and year of the car, but the VIN number is different. The recall that is out for other VIN of the same car and engine states that there is rod bearing failure due to a faulty crankshaft. This has been confirmed by the dealership. There were no warning lights or indications that the car was not in proper mechanical shape prior to the issue. The dealership and corporate are unwilling to work with us to have this issue repaired under the recall, even though it is the same issue, since it is 17,000 miles over the warranty and that the recall “does not affect our VIN number.” The engine that the car needs is not available unless it is a used engine as there are so many issues with said engine, which then makes the engine extremely expensive and difficult to locate.

I was driving down a busy road when engine seized, no warnings on dash prior to failure. Luckily, I was able to catch a break in traffic and safely cruised into an open parking lot. Otherwise, it could have easily resulted in a collision. The incident occurred on Wednesday 11/22/2023. The 2017 Santa Fe had regular oil services and did not show or indicate any signs it required attention. No check engine light, no oil pressure, light, absolutely nothing. The car simply cut out while driving at around 35-40mph. Santa Fe was towed and the dealership mentioned rod bearing failure and engine knock. The estimate to fix it was 18k which was not feasible for me at the time. Additionally, the dealership claimed it was a common problem with the make, stating they had received multiple cars that Thanksgiving weekend. I worked with the dealership, but they did not seem to want to do the replacement, so I purchased a used rebuilt engine and paid the labor to change it for approximately 8,500 dollars. I opened a claim with Hyundai and it was denied because I was the a second owner and the warranty expired at 60k and I was at 66k. We have changed the oil every 3k miles and took really well care of this vehicle as we only had it for 3mo before we were forced to park it due to the engine failure.

On Friday March 22 2024 I was attempting to merge onto the highway but an individual wouldn't let me in which forced me to have to slam on my breaks. After I was able merge, roughly 2 miles down the highway I started hearing what sounded like a belt flapping under the front of my car, the noise increased into a banging I noticed I was losing speed so I pressed on the gas petal and received no exeleration. I immediately pulled to the side of the highway. No lights came on to alert that there was an issue prior. I pressed on my brake and it was rock hard and my wheel seized. I turned off my vehicle to attempt to restart it when I turned the key there once one click sound and all the alerts lights came on. I was unable to turn the wheel or press down on the brake as it was locked up. I had my vehicle towed to a mechanic. I explained what happened the mechanic said it sounded like my engine. He checked the oil and said the stick was dry and when he drained the oil it was black and had a strong odor. I'm pondering of how that can be due to I had gotten an oil change 4 monthly ago and very rarely do I drive my vehicle. I then read the recalls and reviews on my vehicle. I found the same year and style just last month a similar occurrence like mine regarding the engine. This could have caused a horrible accident which could have been fatal. Being that I am not the only one who had this experience; I think is a necessity to pull this particular vehicle to perform an investigation befo

Engine stalled back in January. Car has been at dealership ever since. I'm waiting on backordered parts to arrive to my 3rd party because so many engines are being replaced. Hyundai flat out told me that a used or remanufactured engine would eventually do the same thing. I've been told it was "catastrophic Engine failure" with shavings in my oil pan. My oil changes and upkeep were up to date which is why my 3rd party warranty company is agreeing to putting a reman Engine in. Hyundai should be made to provide new engines not remanufactured junk of the same problem. Too many people are going through what I'm going through. I have 3 more years of payments but only a year left for my warranty and still no car to drive. Here is a link to an entire group of people experiencing the same issues. My coworker also has the same year and make and was stranded on the highway last week. Her car is now at the same dealership (Hyundai of Kennesaw). I had to pay part out of pocket to get it to Kennesaw because they had a shorter wait time of 2 months vs 6 months at my local dealership. I don't have paperwork yet as I don't have my car yet. On [XXX] (a Sunday, 9 pm), my 19 year old daughter was driving our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited when a solid yellow check engine light came on. No other warning lights were on. She called us, but since a solid check engine light should not indicate an emergent issue, we advised her to carefully drive the car back to school and we'd get it checked out the next day (since it was after 9 pm on a Sunday). The vehicle didn't make it that far. While driving, the car suddenly lost power and stalled. It started up again but made a terrible sound. We were able to call roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to a nearby Hyundai dealership. The dealership tells us the car needs a new engine and that our VIN it is not covered under any of the other current engine recalls (even though this is the exact same issue as those recalls) and also said they will not repair under the 100,000 mile warranty, since we are the 2nd owners. We are awaiting a report from the dealership on exactly what happened to kill the engine, but we can infer, through the discussion with the service manage, that this is exactly the same issue happening with other versions of the Santa Fe engine -- including complete engine seizure without any accompanying warning lights or indications. This poses an imminent risk to the safety of drivers and passengers. My daughter was 20 minutes from her college dorm, late at night, and we can only be thankful she was not driving at high speed on the highway when the engine s

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
