2016 Honda HR-V complaints

Paint recall expired. I have owned my vehicle since new, production date is 12/2015 with about 82,000 miles. It has been serviced regularly at the Honda dealership since new, my information has never changed. I have never been notified personally, phone call, text, email or regular mail that my vehicle had a recall for paint. The pictures on the NHTSA web site matches mine exactly. Honda America says that the recall covers my vehicle but it has expired. Is this fair when I have never been notified?

The contact owns a 2016 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The driver was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 21-046. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 107,000.

I had the push start button replaced approximately 2 years ago due to the part failing and the car being extremely hard to start. This was covered by Honda (not sure if it was an actual recall). Now I am having the exact same issue again. This is extremely dangerous as I leave work late at night and alone. I am tired of constantly being stranded and it taking several minutes to get my car started. Their replacement part has failed just like the original part did.

Whenever it is cold, 45 degrees or colder, the right front display goes black. This is the display that gives fuel in fuel tank amount, mileage, and rpm. The display stays black until the car heats up, and this can be as long a 20-30 minutes. This is a dangerous situation, because you do not know how much fuel is in your tank. Additionally, if it turns out that you have low fuel, you risk running out of gas and being stuck in cold weather. Other issues can occur as well. This problem is widely reported online, and Honda has apparently done nothing. I went to my local Honda dealer and spoke to two people. The first one brushed me off and treated me as if it was "too bad." The second person was nicer, acknowledged that she had heard of the problem. Further, this apparently affects latter HRV's as well. Please do something and make Honda fix this known problem.

Push start/stop button was noting working properly (this had a recall and was replaced). However after it was repaired, I noticed the right-sided gas gauge with service repair numbers, milage etc is not working properly; the gas guage and service repair codes disappear and/or are scrambled. I took this to the Honda dealership in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and was told by the service advisor (Drew Mechley) that their mechanic said he doesn't think it is related to the start/stop button repair but this is a common probelm seen with HR-Vs. I also found multiple forums with people experiencing the same issue. Here is one of the forums [XXX] . I am concerned this is a safety issue as I cannot see when my gas is out and cannot see when a service code displays for needed maintenance that could damage the vehicle if it is not completed. Was told over the that it is likely an electrical panel issue in the dashboard display (they did not put this in the service report as they wanted additional money for further diagnostic which I did not complete). I worry that the electrical issue could eventually affect the speed gauge on the dashboard. Due to this being a common issue seen in the HR-V with both consumers and Honda mechanics, I feel a recall should be issued. After a rain storm, I noticed that the trunk door of my Honda HRV was filled with water. I could tell that it had a large amount of water in it because I could hear the water sloshing when driving. I also saw water slowly dripping from the trunk door when I opened it. I could tell that there was a lot more water in the door, but there was no way for me to drain it. In addition to having water in my trunk door, I found that the water had also filled in the spare tire well. Upon researching the issue, I have found that this is a common issue with my make and model as many people on a forum reported the same issue. I believe this is a safety issue because it can cause mold problems which is a health hazard. It can also cause damage to the trunk door and electrical components. In addition, water filling in the spare tire well could cause issues with the spare tire and potentially make it unusable. I took my car to the Honda service center and was told that this is a known problem for my make and model, and that the rubber around the tail light deteriorated. Their solution was to replace the tail lights, which would cost over a thousand dollars. Although I understand that rubber can deteriorate, this issue is not found on most cars and is specific to my model. The car should be designed to drain water and not have its parts fill up with water if the rubber has deteriorated.

I was driving to work on the freeway when my CVT belt failed. It was very scary. My vehicle lost power and did not want to continue driving. This was scary on the freeway going approximately 65-70mph. At the time this occurred the check engine light came on, the brake light came on, the brake system light came on, and it was flashing “park”. This was really scary because none of these lights were on when I started my vehicle that morning and up until this issue occurred my vehicle was driving fine, no issues, no warning lights and no other symptoms indicating a problem. Losing power on the busy freeway where all other vehicles were traveling just as fast if not faster than me could have been very dangerous and this should be considered a safety concern by Honda. The vehicle was diagnosed by Honda and confirmed CVT belt failure within the transmission. There is an active recall for this issue but my VIN is not included. I’ve been told by Honda that they recommend replacing the transmission.

On two separate occasions during February this has occurred. While at a stop sign with the brake floored the engine revved and the car started to slowly inch forward. Later in the month, at a convenience store, before shifting into park the brake was thoroughly depressed and the engine once again revved and the car started to inch forward. It only stopped when I pushed on the brake with all my might. The car had had its yearly inspection in January.

Our 2016 Honda HR-V experienced a significant issue when the fuel pump unexpectedly failed, causing the car to stall while driving uphill over an overpass. Thankfully, this incident occurred in town. It could have happened while driving on the interstate, which would have posed a severe safety risk to our family. We promptly had the Honda HR-V towed to our local Honda dealership for diagnosis and repair, where we were presented with a bill totaling over $900, including sales tax, for replacing the fuel pump. Upon further reflection, I am concerned as to why this fuel pump failure was not included in any recalls or notifications. I am aware that certain fuel pumps in other Honda HR-Vs and models have been subject to recalls due to similar issues, and I am concerned as to why the fuel pump in this 2016 HR-V was not addressed proactively. There were no warning signs, no warning signals, and no warning symptoms before the fuel pump failure.

Incident happened one time. Starting car in cold weather (around 25 degrees) after it hadn't been driven in 2 days. The odometer/gas display was black at start up. After a few minutes the gauge lights came on but the digital display was gibberish. I started to drive and once the car warmed up after several minutes the digital display was working as it should and recording milage and acceleration/deceleration speed. My mechanic hooked up the car and no codes were showing a malfunction. Many other folks in the Honda forums have this exact issue. I'm driving this car on a road trip and am concerned something dangerous could occur. For now I will manually/mentally record mileage to ensure I dont run out of gas and praying this isnt a large electrical short issue

I was driving on the interstate in cruise, the car engine started revving hard. My speed jumped up to 85mph. Then all of a sudden the vehicle jerked hard and I lost all acceleration. The car rapidly decelerated. Then, the power steering, check engine, vehicle stability assist, electric parking brake, and low tire pressure lights all came on. As well as the gear indicator was unable to show if I was in drive, park, or neutral. The vehicle became very sluggish and started stuttering I had to carefully navigate between other cars flying past me until I was able to get to the side of the road, I was almost hit 3 times, once by a semi-truck. Once I got it to the side of the road I was unable to get the car to move at all. The engine would rev but the car would not move. The car was towed to the local Honda dealer in Evansville, IN. The dealership said that the CVT transmission belt had shattered and that the transmission needed to be replaced. I asked them about the TSB Number: [XXX]. They stated that I am out of the 7-year / 150k mile extended warranty so it is going to cost $7,662 to replace it. The vehicle has only 72,000 on it. While driving, the car engine started revving hard. Then, the power steering, vehicle stability assist, electric parking brake, check engine, and low tire pressure lights all came on. The vehicle became very sluggish and would start stuttering around 3k rpm or 40mph. The dealership said that the transmission needs to be replaced and that I am out of the 7-year / 150k mile extended warranty so it is going to cost $8,300. The vehicle has 100k miles on the odometer. This is very disappointing.

I was driving the car home from work and all of the warning lights on the dashboard came on- the check engine light, tire pressure light, traction control light, brake warning light, and the park emergency brake light. The "park" sign and p/r/d light lights were flashing. The car would not accelerate past 35 miles without it kicking back. I was terrified to drive the car on the interstate due to the acceleration kick back. I had to take a longer route home. I prayed the entire way. I keep up with my car maintenance with oil changes, etc. I even had the transmission fluid changed one year prior to this event. I had no prior issues, messages, symptoms, or other problems with this car prior to this event. It happened suddenly. I took the car to the dealership who initially told me the issue was a p0793 sensor and then a week later informed me that I needed a new transmission. I bought this car brand new, and it currently has 90,000 miles on it. Honda posted a bulletin in April 2021 they are aware that this make, and model has transmission issues, but because I am one year outside of the extended warranty, they are not willing to work with me.

Driving slowly to garage, sudden unintended acceleration and brakes stopped working. My car crashed into the rear wall of the garage. The front end of my car was damaged. The wall of my garage was damaged as well. I went to the doctor due to pain in my chest and arms.

The parking brake engages on and off when the car is turned off. There are 3 lights flashing -check engine light -the word “park” - the parking brake light I have had the code read and it says it is the evap canister purge valve which has already been replaced, the light went off temporarily and it’s back on again. The transmission is noisy when accelerating. The purge valve keeps going bad for no apparent reason and the parking brake randomly engaging and disengaging when the car is turned off leads me to believe there is an issue overall with the build of the car. I am worried the emergency brake will engage when driving.

The screen that presents the odometer, temperature, and other travel metrics for the HR-V becomes scrambled and flashes in and out. This is a distraction while driving and appears to reflect a malfunctioning electrical issue. I am concerned that my vehicle may be a danger to drive and not properly record mileage and/or pass inspection. My understanding that this is a very common issue with HR-Vs but that Honda will not acknowledge or correct this issue.

Check engine light came on, gear selector light was flashing and all dash board lights came on at 150,189 miles. The dealer attempted to repair the transmission by replacing the valve body. The car was driven 29 miles before all dash warning lights came back on. Dealer said the only repair was to replace the entire transmission, which includes a new valve body. Dealer said the codes recommended the replacement. The transmission was replaced at 114,193 miles under a recall. The transmission failure was after the 150,000 warranty extension. Honda is replacing transmissions in the HRV with rebuilt transmissions that will fail again.

Driving 80 mph on the freeway and the car entered limp mode, decelerated to 40 mph with all lights illuminated on the dash. All signs pointed to the CVT belt deterioration that is plaguing this make and model vehicle. Towed 100 miles to the same Honda Service department that performed the recall earlier this year and they were supposed to have inspected for metal fragments in the engine. I informed the mechanic of the service bulletin and warranty extension, as they were entirely oblivious to it. Told them to check for metal shavings. They run diagnostics, and recommend a transmission flush. I say, ok, but send me a picture if you find the metal shavings in the plug. They perform flush- reboots the computer and yet again, all the lights come back on the dash. Finally they pull the transmission oil plug to find…….metal shavings. Car is at 112,000 miles and nearing the end of the 7 year extended warranty. Not at all what I was expecting from a Honda.

There is a short circuit of some type in the dash gauge that houses the odometer and gas gauge. It slowly started several years ago, mainly when the weather is cold/humid. The gauge will sometimes flash garbage codes Or sometimes not work at all. This can interfere with knowing how much fuel is in the car or mileage for annual inspections. My personal mechanic is aware of this problem but hasn’t inspected this particular issue. I have reported it to Honda America, and through a specific forum, I’m aware that there’s many people who are also having this same issue. This problem can be reproduced only in cooler/humid weather. Sometimes it can be triggered by pushing/knocking lightly on the face of the gauge.

The CVT transmission was replaced under a recall at 114k miles. The replacement transmission failed at 150,180 miles, which is 180 miles outside of the extended warranty. Honda declined to repair/replace the transmission a second time. I took it in because the dashboard lights were flashing. The dealer replaced the valve body at my cost and the lights came back on just 29 miles into driving it. When stopped at a red light, the car gets stuck in neutral. A new transmission is now needed per the dealer’s diagnosis. The car is unsafe to drive and the replacement transmission was obviously not a reliable upgrade from the recalled transmission.

The white pearl paint is coming off the hRV 2016 car. It is past 7 yrs warranty so Honda of America is telling me they are not responsible. I spoke to a supervisor named Leonard, who was at extension 7042 at the 1-800-999-1009 number. They repainted the car at the five year point which was the roof in the hood where the paint was bubbling, but would only paint the part of the car that had issues at that point they would not repaint the whole car. They tell me that the warranty ended in June even though I did not take ownership of the car until July due to delivery, the car had to be ordered and it had to be shipped to me which meant I received the car in July. They are telling me now they’re sorry, but there’s nothing they can do about the paint. This is going to rust. Sheets of the paint and underneath coating is coming off in big pieces on the door on the driver side and passenger side. My family has owned 8 cars with Honda Of America and I have been so happy until this point. Also when I had to take the car due to roof paint before due to recalls, they never give you loaners, or even transportation home from any recalls.

My car was in idle and suddenly all of these lights come on the dash board. The traction control light, brake system light, power steering light, the brake light, and the abs light. I was told that this was a abs module issue and the dealership haven't figured out how to remedy those that come in for this same issue.

Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that he continued driving; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 30 MPH. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to respond as needed while attempting to drive from a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to TSB Number: 21-047. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle had exceeded the 7-year warranty period. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

10-10-2023 car went into limp mode on intersate - took to shop - they thought it was alternator - happened a second time - on interstate. Took to the honda dealer and after a few days they diagnosed with CVT Transmission Failure. the car is a 2016 with 95,000 miles on it. I purchased a Honda for longevity, and this is unacceptable. I'm hoping the extension of warranty will include mine since i'm barely beyond the 7 year extension.

I pulled on to the road and heard an awful gravely grating noise coming from the vehicle. No dash warning lights/indicators were illuminated at this time, which led me to think it was potentially a tire/suspension type issue. I let off of the accelerator and the noise stopped. There were still no dash warning indicators on, and I was in the lane of travel with vehicles approaching from behind, so I gently pressed the accelerator to attempt to get off the road to investigate and the noise returned. The vehicle seemed to not be accelerating as expected and it appeared that the speedometer needle kind of floated, at which point everything locked up immediately. All dash light warning indicators came on, and the gear indicator was unreadable (almost like it was displaying P and N at the same time) despite the vehicle gear shift still being in drive. I attempted again to gently accelerate to get out of the lane of travel but the vehicle did not move, however the speedometer needle did. I shut off the car and turned it back on, all dash indicator warnings returned and remained illuminated, and I was able to get the vehicle to move a very short distance so that I was mostly out of the lane of travel. I attempted to put the vehicle in reverse so that I could get completely out of the lane of travel which was unsuccessful. Transmission issue

I was never notified of the CVT Belt Software Update and now I have to replace my whole transmission. Very frustrating how I was not informed so I can try to update before it goes out and I'm stuck. How did this happen?

Transmission failure. Took 3 Visits for them to locate problem. Yes it is available for inspection until Aug.14,2023. Honda cannot fix it any earlier for they have no loaner cars for me. The car jerks when doing 20/25 mph. Excelerates slowly.I was driving on hwy when the car just slowed down with trucks behind me. No safe at all. I informed Metro Honda I need to go to work, they told me I can drive it but not too far. That’s a terrible answer! So I’m still at risk for my safety! Yes the problem has been confirmed by the dealer I have an appointment Aug.14, 2023. Yes there were warnings when the cat first started failing I brought it to Honda service 2x first they said my mat was in the way of the pedals.then they said the trans fluid needed changing, noon finally they admit there’s a problem. The mechanic does not know what he’s doing.

CVT transmission failure. It’s important and unsafe when your vehicles stops in the middle of the road without any sign of warning. No power to move just completely stops running. This puts many lives in danger if it were to have happened in the middle of the highway, especially in contruction block off zones. I am sure Dealerships are aware of this issue. The dealership were the ones to inform me that my vehicle’s CVT transmission belt deteriorated. No warning signs at all just complete stop and loss of power to run. Vehicle turns on without a problem but does not drive or move forward. I even did my oil transmission change and was not told some debris of metal was present at the moment of service. Not until two years later that the vehicle finally stopped moving foward and me taking it to the dealership to find out it was the CVT belt which is the whole transmission inside that broke and needs replacement. I find it strange that the warranty was extended two more years on it without me being informed on it. My warranty expired and the dealership did not honor to have my vehicle fixed due to warranty being expired by 3 months past due the 7 year warranty. Had I known the first time it had issues it would have fallen in time of warranty, I would have asked for a new transmission. I hope this does not happen to others in the highway as this is a hazardous safety concern.

Driving smoothly 67 mph on 210 freeway in Azusa California car suddenly lost acceleration in heavy traffic..steered car 4 lanes over than exited off ramp. Car had some low acceleration all warning lights flashing on my dash..none made any indication what's wrong..had car towed to honda..said it was the transmission! Honda had recall before this..took it in..they adjusted it but when i got it back it was reving too high rpm at 65 mph took it back again and they said it was fine..i don't think so than this happened!

July 11, 2023, 2016 HR-V stalled in the middle of the freeway at night, upon every restart the HRV will only engage Drive into 1st gear and disengage when it is attempting to switch to higher, most if not all dash warning lights turned on - only at this point, no prior notices/warnings when this happened, then almost got rammed by oncoming traffic multiple times. We had to have the car crawl forward 5 seconds at a time to reach a safe area out the next exit. We had the 2016 HR-V towed to the nearest Honda Center. Need HELP getting this fixed, and inform the public about the danger it can cause, I called (7/12/23) American Honda, and they said over the phone that they took care of it during a 2021 CVT reprogramming, American Honda have data that software reprogramming was applied per my conversation with an agent, Honda service tech reports of metal shavings present inside transmission and it needs get a new transmission. The reprogramming was not enough, I really doubt that the recall diagnosis and intervention was applied correctly. It is the second day in the Honda Center and the service tech requested for another day to research the matter, they were leaning to the idea that we are out of warranty and wants to have us pay for a replacement transmission. The CVT recall was supposed to cover 7 years/150000 miles, which ever comes first. we just reached 7 years/120000 and they are leaning towards denying us of the warranty service, clearly the transmission was faulty and Hond

Without warning, my transmission imploded yesterday while driving on the freeway. Car was on for less than 15 minutes

Went to put car seat in rear drivers side seat to find the seat belt doesn't latch. Seems to be similar to current Honda recall

Door lock actuators fail in quick succession (at only 60K miles). Vehicle can not be opened quickly from outside as, except for the driver's door, there is no physical keyhole. Replaced remote batteries, no change. Took it to Honda service. They diagnosed and replaced two actuators ($700+). A third one failed a month later. US Honda says the vehicle is off warranty. As far as I can tell, the replacement actuators are the same as the failing ones so I expect they will fail again.

Transmission completely failed while driving. Was able to complete the extended warranty update for known transmission issues prior to exceeding the 150K mileage. I am not convinced the dealer looked for signs of wear at the time of updating the software.

Bad BCM in the HRV cause the vehicle to stall out. Also the vehicle ignition process would turn on while the vehicle was off in the garage posing a fire risk

Transmission failed. Left in heavy traffic with no way to move car. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by Honda. No warnings before the failed transmission occurred. Sitting at stop light, when gas pedal depressed, no forward or backward movement.

Original tires, breaks & shocks were on the vehicle. The dealership told me they were new. I had this car for a year. The car was sold 19,000.00 overpriced and now it's worth 13,000.00.

Dashboard went blank and it was determined that the Gauge Control Unit malfunctioned. Brought it to Honda - the cost to repair was $2098.62. This should not happen to a 2016 HRV with only 24000 miles!

The front dash with electronic optometry, mileage, and gas gage will flicker and delay coming up clearly it is more noticeable in cooler climates.

My push to start and key fobs have both stopped working intermittently. I have had my battery replaced. There are times when I cannot start my car.

Cars on/off push button doesn't always turn on with key fob! Turns on then shuts off sometimes! Key indicator light on dash turned on! Notified dealership. Ohio Valley Honda brought it down to shop. They give me run around even though there is a bulletin out. It might stop as I'm driving.

Dashboard light goes dark when driving, I’m told by Honda it is a cluster malfunction not under warranty or recall, my vehicle has under 14,000 miles original owner.also the tire light indicator stays on

My push start button isn't working properly. It takes several times pushing the button for it to start my vehicle. Very frustrating!!

I was driving on a Nevada highway and getting into an off ramp with mild traffic. I attempted to break so I could stop behind another driver and realized my breaks weren't working. I then put my entire body weight on the breaks and they failed to stop or slow down my vehicle. I ended up colliding into the vehicle ahead at 50 mph. Even with an impact of 50mph not a single airbag went off. I sustained head injuries. This could have been lethal. Myself and my passenger could have died. The breaks failed resulting in a collision and the air bags did NOT go off. My vehicle was totaled on the spot and i spent over 7 hours in the hospital due to my vehicles failing to keep me safe. I did reasrch and almost every other 2016 Honda HRV has a recall for the breaks and somehow mine did not when the breaks failure could have killed me.

The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
