2016 Ford Fusion complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2016 record →
In the last 4 years the battery has had to be replaced 3 times. Each time the car runs great then is shut off and the next day won't start, no lights and can't even get into the car without the key. The vehicle can't be jumped or battery charged, everything is dead. Upon replacing the battery everything works fine for about 2 years.

THE TRUNK WILL OPEN BY ITSELF. THIS HAPPENS AT RANDOM TIME TO INCLUDE WHILE DRIVING. I AM SEEING LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE ONLINE BUT NOW ONE HAS FOUND A FIX AT THIS TIME.
I was told by the dealer that my car has an engine block defect. It leaks coolant into the cylinder head and can cause the engine to overheat and can cause a fire or the engine to blow up.

My brakes failed. Pedal went to the floor. Brake fluid leaked out. Extremely terrifying.
Coolant intrusion in the second cylinder causing engine failure. This is a known design flaw and ford will not fix it because its out of warrenty.

The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 79,400.
The front driver's side door latch failed. The latch would not secure to keep the door closed. The vehicle is at a dealership and could be inspected on request. My safety was put at risk because the latch could have failed while I was driving it. The dealership said they "didn't know why" my vehicle did not have a recall on the door latch as many 2016 Ford Fusions do have that recall. The vehicle is being inspected today by the dealership. There were no warnings for the door latch malfunction.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front driver’s side door inadvertently opened without warning. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.
I bought my car new at AutoNation st the end of 2015. I serviced it there the whole time I had it. The check engine light came on back in may. They said it was a spark plug. The car ran for a few weeks and the check engine light came back on. I tried getting it back into AutoNation. They wouldn't return my phone call for over a week. So I decided to take it to Spritzer in Hartville. They diagnosed it as coolant leaking into the engine cylinders due to a defective engine block. That they've known was a problem for years. Spritzer told me that they get a few in every month with the same problem. I feel Ford has sold these Echoboost engines knowingly to the public. I was told my car was out of warranty and I have to trade it in or pay $11,000 to replace the long block. My car only has 72,000 miles on it and was well taken care of. I feel Ford needs to recall these engines because if it blows up on the highway you'd lose control of the vehicle possibly.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the ABS warning light and the StabiliTrak warning lights were illuminated. The contact then stated that he received a recall notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V162000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and notified the dealer of the recall and the failure. The contact was then informed by the technician that once the recall was completed, they should eliminate and turn off the warning lights. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where the recall was completed however, the contact stated that after the vehicle was retained, the ABS warning light and the StabiliTrak warning light illuminated. The contact then stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he had to apply pressure to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was then diagnosed that the ABS sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 172,182.
Coolant reservoir was empty. Filled it and was low in a few days. Also started getting P302 check engine error for Cylinder 2 Misfire. That in combination with coolant leaks shows that coolant is intruding into cylinder 2. Most likely through the design grooves in Engine. This defect should be covered under a recall.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the rear passenger’s side door latch had failed, and the door would not remain closed securely. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. My vehicle is a 2016 Ford Fusion SE VIN3FA6P0H79GR130351. There is currently a recall (20V177000) on 2016 Ford Fusions, however it appears that the recall does not cover my specific vehicle per Ford. In 2021 we had an incident where the driver side door latch broke/stopped functioning causing the door to swing open and the door not securing properly. Upon that incident occurring, I took the vehicle to the dealership (Duval Ford, Jacksonville Florida) for repair, at which time I was told my vehicle was not covered under the recall nor was the issue covered under warranty. Thus I paid approximately $400 to have the repair complete. Yesterday the door latch failed again, this time while driving in traffic as I was coming to a stop at an intersection. The door violently flew open as the vehicle was still moving. Had there been someone standing or walking in the median, the door would have hit them. Upon stopping I attempted to secure the door but it will not secure and just stays open. It will be required to again pay to repair this major safety issue. I believe this safety issue should be covered under the current recall for the same model vehicles in this year. I am concerned that after repair this issue will occur again and could cause a major accident or great bodily harm.

The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,714.
Power steering fault
Vehicle won’t start so I called my roadside/towing assistant number got someone out to do battery jump service because I been through this before twice come to find out that wasn’t the issue might needed more gas still wasn’t the issue so I got the vehicle towed to a shop it came back I needed the dealership to reprogram the vehicle they couldn’t because it wasn’t drivable so I got it towed to another shop just for them to tell me I need a new engine they didn’t know what cause the problem but just off what they seen while doing a diagnostic was low compression on all cylinders oil full and normal color (not brunt) coolant is full and clean warranty doesn’t want to cover parts that’s needed for the vehicle like cylinder head gasket check engine light always came on after repairs was fixed
2 car door latches unresponsive and wont lock. Known issue with ford this VIN isnt covered by recall but same issue
I was driving to a friends house when my car start to make a dinging sound, and on the dashboard it said that power steering was lost, and to pull over safely. When i tried to turn the car on and off again to see if it might have been a glitch, the wheel locked up and I couldn’t turn it, without almost breaking it. If i want going to my friends house when it happened, my car would have been in an accident on a highway going towards my house, possibly causing multiple injuries and accidents since it happened late in the afternoon almost night time. I went to have it looked at by a mechanic and they said it could possibly be the rack and pinion when they ran the codes. The only warning i got was that my car was saying that the hill assist parking was turned off, even though i never turned it off.
My back-up camera only half works. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. My car also doesn’t alert me to when I’m getting too close to another vehicle when I backing into a parking spot. Also, the Bluetooth in my car has not worked or even connect to my phone since I first bought that car, and for this car to not even be 10 years old yet, this is ridiculous. Everyone I know has been having very similar issues. Y’all need to get it together. Is there anyway this issue can be looked into as well please? It’s be really nice to get to use all of my features I pay for. Love the car, hate this electrical bs. 🙄
Driver door opened while driving. Door latch will not secure. Remains open. There is a recall for same type of vehicle year make and model. 20S15 is the recall number.
A year ago (2022), the passenger door latch failed for unknown reasons out of the blue. The door simply would not close. At the shop, the technician mentioned that it had mechanically and electrically failed and the door would not latch. A year later (2023), The issue is reoccuring; same (passenger) door and driver door both suddenly will not latch making the car inoperable due to safety risks. Upon research, it seems this issue is common to specific Ford models. Re: Ford Fusion Hybrid/Energi Recall Campaign # 20S15/20V177, there is an outstanding recall for certain VIN numbers but Ford refuses to cover my issue despite clear safety concern.
BRAKES WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, BRAKE FLUID LEVEL LOW LIGHT CAME ON. MYSLEF AND OTHERS WERE AT GREAT RISK AS I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS WITHOUT A WAY TO BRAKE. GOT IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS CONFIRMED TO BE THE FRONT BRAKE HOSES. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS OF THIS HAPPENING.
The lug nuts had swollen and were not able to loose without damage. In order to rotate my tires the dealership had me pay for new lug nuts. If they the parts were that cheaply made at the factory, why am i asked to pay for them.
Check engine light came on as the car started riding and idling rough. Took my car to Firestone and they hooked car up to computer and pulled codes. Engine misfire in cylinder 4. They weren't confident what the issue/fix was, so they recommended that I take to the Ford dealership to have them assess. Dealing with the dealership was a nightmare and after staying on top of them for 10 days, I finally was able to get a diagnosis that it was my spark plugs. Not wanting to wait another 10 days for a fix, I took the car back to Firestone since Ford had said what the issue was. Firestone changed the spark plugs and problem was resolved. The next day, check engine came back on and was riding/idling rough. Took back to Firestone. It was a misfire in cylinder again and they changed all 4 spark plugs again thinking it might be the spark plugs. They also confirmed that the coils were not the issue. Problem was solved. Four days later, the check engine light comes back on and the car is riding rough. Took back to Firestone and they dug deeper and confirmed that coolant was leaking into the cylinder causing the misfire. They said that it is a well-known and well-documented issue with the Eco Boost engines as they have a design flaw that allows coolant to leak into the cylinder. Firestone cautioned that I needed to be careful to monitor my coolant levels as the leak into the engine will drain my levels and can cause serious engine and safety issues. They said that I would need a new engine
I got into an accident around May 3rd. Roughly around 11 pm to 12 am. To inform whomever is reading, none of the issues I will list have happened prior to this event. At the accident my car would not turn on, and it would not lock. As well as a piece of the car had broke off. I took my car to Mike's auto body for repairs. When the person inspecting the car had reviewed what was wrong with my 2016 Ford Fusion, I was informed part of the issue was the starter. I was informed by Nick a staff member of Mike's auto body, that the piece was replaced. After I had picked up my car on June 6, 2023 as per the receipt from my payment. The first time the event happened was on around June 6th to June 20th (I know it happened on a rainy Tuesday or Wednesday anywhere from 7am to 8am prior to Thursday June 22nd.) My car flashed "See manual" on my dash board. The air bag light had turned on. My car would not accelerate, the brakes functioned at this point, but when I pulled off the road and parked my car shook. When I had turned my car off, took out the keys, and turned it on again the problem was "resolved" and I was able to continue driving to work. I had called the auto shop and eventually left my car with the auto shop to be safe. The next event happened on Thursday June 22nd at 4:10 pm after I had picked it up from the auto shop when Nick had informed me my car was safe and nothing was reading on the scanner. (I took a picture of the dash board to show the message) and turned my car back

When driving straight the steering wheel was turned to the right, after I turned the steering wheel a couple of turns the steering wheel and the car was driving straight. the stirring wheel was wobbly. I took it to a dealer they tightened up the steering wheel. no warning signs
The steering wheel is suddenly incredibly loose and while in park the steering wheel will rotate but the tires do not move with the steering wheel. While driving the steering wheel suddenly gets caught on something and will hold the steering wheel in place while turning the steering wheel. I have not the slightest idea on why this is happening but it is very concerning.

The power steering assist on my car completely shut off while I was on the highway. I almost got into multiple head-on collisions trying to get the car back home, and I have not been able to drive it since. The part that is faulty is very common in 2016 Ford Fusions, under the recall number #19S26. However, for some reason Ford is saying the recall is not available anymore to me, because it passed prior inspection two years ago when I bought the car. There were warnings as the steering shut off to stop the car, letting me know that I had power steering loss. I know from personal research that Ford should offer a recall for this, especially since they "inspected" it before letting me purchase the car, just 24 months ago. I spent $14000 on a relatively new car, and now they are charging $4500 to fix this part that was originally recalled. They either repaired it wrong, or there should be a recall administered for the repair. Thank you for your help
WHILE DRIVING TRYING TO MAKE A TURN...MY STEERING WHEEL JERKED AND I ALMOST RAN INTO A PARKED CAR BECAUSE MY POWER STEERING JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN FAILED!!! HOW DOES THAT..JUST HAPPEN? SO MY POWER STEERING ASSIST AND MY SERVICE ADVANCED TRAC LIGHT CAME ON.. AFTER THIS HAPPENED..! UNACCEPTABLE..I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY VEHICLE..SO I SEE THERE WERE A WHOLE LOT OF COMPLAINTS OF THIS HAPPENING...AND WOULD LIKE FORD DEALER TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATLY...THIS IS UNSAFE. IM IN CHICAGO.
The drivers seatbelt is stuck and will not release to allow me to buckle myself in.
After parking the car, I opened the front passenger door from the outside and then attempted to close it but the door would not latch. The latch was not engaging to keep it should. I can hear the lock working when pressed with the key remote and on the door, but did not change the catching of the door. This is a safety issue because the door is currently tied shut with rope as I am working on getting it fixed. I am concerned that the door could open while driving and windows must be rolled down to tie it, so it is not secured when left parked. A Ford dealer mechanic did look at the door and confirmed the issue as it has still not been fixed. There were no warning signs or issues leading up to the door latch giving way. However there is a current recall on door latches of 2016 Ford Fusions sold in Arizona (where the car was bought and still located) with the exact same issue. However, after speaking with the Ford service department they stated that my VIN number was not included in the recall, even though it was the exact same issue.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
