Initially; I thought someone rear ended my truck, but it turned out to be a severe shifting problem when accelerating. I took the truck to a Ford Authorized Service Dealer and they told me about the well documented "10R80 mechanical hardware defect (CDF drum migration)" transmission problem for Ford model years 2017-2022. There were no warning messages or symptoms that I remember. The truck has 142,000 miles.
Excessive oil consumption. I have to check and refill every single week since i drive over 100 miles/day, it is ridiculous how much oil burns. Transmission at high speed acts very erratic, when downshifting is like it doesn't know what do do and when it finally decides to down shift, it kicks so hard that feels like it's going to brake in pieces, even at low speed the shifting is very hard, not smooth at all. radio carplay is useless, every time i try carplay, it works but i am not able to use the volume, so i have the feature but can't use it
The transmission was shifting extremely rough. When attempting to accelerate from a stop, the RPMs would increase without shifting for several seconds causing me to be stuck in the middle of intersections. It would also slip from a higher gear to a lower gear for no reason. This included while driving on the interstate causing a sudden loss of speed. A local transmission shop confirmed the issue and replaced the transmission. That same week he said he had three other Ford F150's (years 2019 to 2020) with the same issue. There were no warning messages when the issue first started happening.
Transmission failure hard knock pushing car forward from 1st gear jumping to 3rd and then holding back when accelerating on the rest of gear making me unsafe cause someone can hit from the back instead of going forward holds back for a few then spinning inside transmission moves ahead.
On a day trip i experienced transmission issues where my truck attempted to shift from 10th gear to 1st gear on the interstate. After getting off an exit it attempted to shift from 6th to 1st gear going 50mph. Ford knows the CDF drum on the 10r80 transmissions are bad from the factory. They have even revised the part to accommodate for the issue. They refuse to recall this transmission or cover the cost. This could have caused a wreck while traveling on the interstate and endangered my life. I have the 6th to 1st gear shift on video.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced hard shifts and the transmission was shuddering. The Check Engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25E070000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the contact was informed that the recall repair could not be completed because the transmission had exceeded 8,000 miles. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,000.
No accident or damage occurred. I was able to drive the vehicle back to the dealership that installed the fluid mixture without needing the automatic 4-wheel drive feature to prevent damage. The vehicle is at the dealership to address the potentially incorrect fluid that were used and to install the Ford recommended fluid. The safety concern is that the Ford dealership followed the guidance of a well known company (BG products) and installed a mixture of fluids that have never been tested in a complex transfer case that has the Torque-on-demand, automatic 4A feature that controls the vehicle's traction during wet/icy conditions. This type of transfer case is not installed in all F-150 trucks, only the upper models like the Lariat or Platinum models. The dealership installed BG 792 plus they mixed in BG 328 additive per a universal guideline published by BG products. This mixture doubles the viscosity of the fluid recommended by Ford, which is Mercon LV (Low Viscosity). The guidance was intended for less complex or manual type transfer cases not the Borg Warner 44-67. The installed mix of BG 792 +328 could cause a slower engagement and inconsistent operation of the Traction-On-Demand system during wet or icy conditions. The Borg Warner 44-67 uses speed sensing and injects low viscosity fluid through portsinto a "wet clutch" pack, and the hydraulic pressure is modulated by a specifically programmed PID loop. The hydraulic system has not been tested with the BG mixtures, that do
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, however the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the vehicle lost motive power. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 52,150.
Transmission. Extremely delayed up shifts. Lurching when placed into reverse. Vehicle would also roll backwards when switching from reverse to drive. Degradation happens over two thousand miles. Got to the point it was a clear safety issue. CDF Failure confirmed by independent shop. Repaired at my cost.
Hard shifting causing my truck to downshift violently. Jerked my neck. Severe neck pain
My 10 speed transmission is not shifting correctly Especially on the expressway, going to cause me to get in an accident
The transmission shift is abrupt. It’s sometimes lethargic and does not transition smooth at all. There’s a clear issue and seems to get worse.
While driving on a straight road, flat surface the ball joint failed/broke causing the lower control arm to drop which in turn caused a collapse of the driver side front suspension. The front quarter panel sustained significant damage due to the collapse. It was all I could do to try and keep the truck under reasonable control. The control bar broke off, traveled under the truck causing some damage, to the under carriage, punctured the rear right passenger tire before denting the back right panel behind the wheel where it exited. Fortunately this was in a rural area, early morning so no other vehicles were involved. Should we keep the pieces so they can be tested/inspected
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission independently downshifted. The contact stated that the vehicle jerked forward. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a CDF drum failure. The contact was informed that the CDF drum needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to a second independent mechanic for a second opinion, where it was diagnosed with a failed CDF drum. The contact was informed that the CDF drum needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the failure was a known failure of the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,130.
WHILE PROCEEDING ONTO A BUSY HIGHWAY THE TRUCK AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTED FROM 1ST GEAR TO 7TH GEAR RENDERING IT SO SLUGGISH IT WOULDNT BARLEY MOVE FORWARD LEAVING IN THE MIDDLE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS HAS OCCURED MORE THAN ONCE AND IM NOW NOT USING THE TRUCK.
My 2019 F150 3.5 ecooboost with the (10R80) transmission is unsafe to drive. The vehicle only has 66,000 miles and it is experiencing very serious transmission problems. I will lead off with the most dangerous safety issue. The 10R80 transmission will shift unexpectedly while traveling around 50 mph from 9th gear to 1st gear without actually engaging 1st gear, but simply becoming unresponsive on a highway at high speed. I was afraid I would be rear ended by another driver because I wasn't engaging any brake lights. A few other hazardous examples would be hard shifting such as from first gear to third gear and skipping second gear when gradually accelerating, downshifting hard when approaching a stop sign or red traffic light and shifting from sixth gear to seventh gear and simply not knowing which gear it wants to be in. The transmission is dangerously erratic. Recently the vehicle had a small (wrench) warning light illuminate. I referred to the manual and it indicates a powertrain malfunction. I brought my vehicle in for service and they did a software update. This did absolutely nothing and the transmission simply got worse. It was more erratic than ever. I scheduled another appointment for service and the dealership subsequently told me I need a new transmission. My truck has 66,000 miles on it. This is crazy. And a delicate 66,000 miles at that as I am meticulous with all maintenance intervals. The transmission is so erratic that I will not drive it. It is simply too unsa
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The transmission is failing. Yes, it is available. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My safety was put at risk by the vehicle losing forward motion while traveling through an intersection. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes I have a diagnosis for transmission rebuild or replace by both a dealer and an independent service center. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Symptoms of slight gear slippage occurred prior to the incident.
2019 F150 with approx 62,000 miles on the odometer. Primary concern is the transmission was unable to shift gears normally. The truck was unable to accelerate or maintain speed normally while the automatic transmission attempted to change gears. This failure occurred without warning. The failure of the transmission was verify by the dealership and an independent mechanic. After the initial failure the "service vehicle" and "check engine" lights came on. After the initial failure the truck was unable to shift into gears 7-10 and had delayed shifting in lower gears. I am lucky the initial failure happened on a residential street at speeds less than 35 MPH. If this had happened at a different part of my commute I could have caused an accident turning into an intersection where cross traffic doesn't have a stop sign.
Cold start rattle lasting a second or more. Ford dealer diagnosed it as being bad cam phaser (TSB 23-2143). This is a very common issue with 3.5L engines from 2017-2020 - well documented on forums and youtube (even by ford technicians). I contacted Ford to see if they would assist in covering cost (my vehicle was a previous fleet vehicle and sold certified used in Dec 2020 with warranty running out in Dec 2025). Ford had several CSP's related to these engine and model years (21B10 and 21N03). Ford says my vehicle is not affected by these two CSPs and that is why coverage is denied. Dealer did determine my vehicle qualified under both CSPs based on information from the CSP's (make, model, build plant). My vehicle is affected by known bad parts, Ford redesigned VCT. Per Ford technicians, the new VCT design is the only long term fix (PCM reflash and replacing with original VCT parts are not). How can a TSB (23-2143) cover my vehicle when the previous CSP did not - for the same issue. Ford is refusing to assist customers cover cost to replace of known poorly designed parts (why would they redesign if they didn't know)? Ford does not include my vehicle in the CSPs though it matches criteria - Ford possibly drastically understated the number of vehicles affected by these CSP's. Dealer says mine is affected by this but Frod doesn't include my vehicle. This should be a full recall (not time limited under CSPs) as it can cause the vehicle to not start when auto stop/start is enabled (
2019 Ford F-150 4wd super crew 10 speed automatic with 51,330 miles. The transmission upon acceleration will slip, slow to shift, disengage, then slam into gear. I was afraid that the transmission would lock-up disengage causing an accident. There was a warning icon of a wrenchon dash display. I took to Ford dealer where they confirmed a Cylinder Bushing had slipped. They recommended to replace the transmission.
The contact owns a 2019 FORD F-150. The contact stated while driving at 65 MPH, The vehicle came to a sudden stop and swung the to the left side of the road. The contact was able to get the vehicle in control and moved into the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence, and later taken to a independent mechanic and was diagnosed to need a full transmission replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.
1.unexpected downshift into second gear while driving - like the engine is falling - causes severe jerk and sometimes truck revs/ goes into neutral - just revs. 2. frozen tailgate latches and door latch defects 3. additionally the transmission harsh shifting when cold (safety/drivability defect): When the vehicle is cold, the 10‑speed transmission shifts harshly, hesitates, clunks, and delays engagement. This matches Ford’s transmission TSBs for calibration and adaptive learning issues. The dealership acknowledged the shifting issue but did not perform the required calibration or TSB procedures. The dealership refuses to document my reported symptoms or perform the TSB repairs unless the failure is happening in front of them. This prevents known defects from being repaired and leaves the vehicle in an unsafe condition. Ford Customer Service confirmed the shifting issue exists but the dealership still did not perform the calibration. ford corp customer service didnt understand and manager didn’t even know what a tsb is:/ so no help at corporate. as chuck the manager stated he didn’t know what document i was referring to and i told him the number as well ? I contacted Ford Customer Service and a case was opened. A customer service manager named Chuck returned my call. He stated that the TSB is “not a warranty” and that the dealership “has to duplicate the condition” before Ford will authorize the repair. I explained that the tailgate freezing issue cannot be duplicated on deman
Rear window track for sliding back window separating causing sliding window to lean inward causing wind.
My 2019 Ford F-150 was subject to Safety Recall 21B10. In June 2021 the dealer documented the cam phaser issue but could not perform the repair. I received the recall notice in October 2021 and step one of the recall was completed in December 2021. In June 2023, still within mileage coverage and under warranty, I returned with the same complaint. The dealer acknowledged the problem and ordered parts explaining that they would take a very long time to come. I was never contacted again. In April 2026 my vehicle has sustained damage to the timing chain, guides, solenoids, cam phasers, and tensioners — all components directly related to the unrepaired recall defect. Ford has offered only partial goodwill coverage, leaving me with a $1,600 balance for damage caused by an incomplete federally-mandated recall repair.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while pressing the brake pedal a grinding noise was present coming from the frontend of the vehicle. While inspecting the vehicle the husband discovered that the brake vacuum line was damaged. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the four wheel drive vacuum hose. After retrieving the vehicle the failure reoccurred and the vehicle was taken back to the local dealer who installed a vacuum tube and actuator assembly but the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was not yet contact regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 86,000.
I took the vehicle in for maintenance -transmission flush, oil change, anything they could find because I was planning on a road trip and wanted it ready. They found the box frame just behind the front tires had completely rusted with large holes. The service tech did not even want to put the vehicle on the lift. They took some pictures and sent them to me. No maintenance was performed due to the severity of the rot. After inspection, no where else on the frame or body/fixtures is there rust like this. There is typical surface rust in usual places. I took multiple pictures of the problem areas as well as adjacent areas. Upon research I found that the 2015-2020 models have this issue due to the lack of weep holes in the box frame which accumulate moisture and rot from the inside out. The truck is a 2019 has 71k miles. I have owned ford trucks for nearly the last 30 years and have never had this issue. Unfortunately the tech said it is not road safe given its condition.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F150. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to turn on. The contact opened the hood and noticed smoke emitting from the front. An abnormal burnt wire odor was emitting from the wires. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the wire harness was burnt and damaged and a fire risk. The vehicle was not repaired due to cost. However, the dealer disconnected the wire harness from the battery due to safety reasons. The contact stated that the failure occurred overnight. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
Just bought this truck 3 weeks ago, and was very excited. Now I have noticed transmission noises during the drop in RPM's during the upshift from 3-5, 3-4, 5-6, and 9-10. Sent it in for diagnostics and they are certain it is the clutch drum bushing failure.
"Upon shifting the vehicle into the 'Drive' (D) position, the transmission produces a loud, audible striking/clunking sound. When accelerating from a stop, the transmission consistently slips and exhibits severe hesitation. Furthermore, the vehicle experiences a complete loss of power/engagement when attempting to shift into 4th gear, creating a safety hazard during higher-speed driving. These symptoms occur regularly and affect the predictable control of the vehicle."
Transmission shifts eradicate, jumps into gear (hard) Motor rpm raises high as transmission actually jumping , not smooth shifting into gear .
This issue has to do with the transmission, not shifting into gear or between gears and/or lurching when shifting. this problem has gotten progressively worse over time and requires that I keep extra distance when in heavy traffic because the lurching or the shifting that doesn’t occur requires that I go at a slower speed at times.
I was getting on the highway in 7th gear and the truck shifted to 1st gear. The rear end locked up and my vehicle skidded out of control. Luckily there was no one around and I did not contact another vehicle or a road barrier.
Back driver side passager window just shattered and glass went everywhere.
Cam Phasers. Ford refuses to repair cam phasers despite having a recall previously and never fixed by previous owner. Ford quoted the repair at $8k. Previously recall stated safety concerns over faulty manufacturing of cam phasers, having plastic parts and exposed parts rather than metal and enclosed parts like in they install during the repair. While I understand the repair was a voluntary recall, it's still a safety concern as engine has rough idle, rough shift changes, sometimes will jolt forward while idling and possible engine shut off due to damage to camshaft caused by the failing cam Phasers. This should be an NHTSA ordered recall.
Driving on the freeway, my transmission made a loud bang jerked the truck and then completely failed. I was traveling a consistent speed around 75 MPH it was in 10th gear just starting on an incline to an overpass. The jerk caused me to almost pull out of my lane, the failure happening on an incline made the vehicle slow considerably, with no shoulder to pull over on it had enough momentum to make it over the high point in the over pass and I coasted to the side of the freeway as soon as I could. Transmission fluid was pouring out of vent tube covering the underside of the truck and getting all over the road. I also ride motorcycles and understand how bad of a situation that can be for anyone riding behind me. Towed to aamco who inspected and diagnosed as the CDF drum failed and had to have the entire transmission rebuilt. No warning light and no indication that it was having any problems before the failure. My daily commute is around 40 miles one way, I was coming home from work, and I was approximately 8 miles from my home. I doubt aamco has the transmission still and the incident happened about 2 months ago.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, while attempting to depress the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated and lost automotive power. The contact stated that seconds later, the vehicle started operating as intended. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000.
There is a known issue with the Ford 10 speed manual transmissions they put in their trucks. They have issued a recall for some but I don't believe it covers all the vehicles affected. I own a 2019 Ford F150 3.5 ECOBOOST with the 10 speed automatic transmission. It has ~104,000 miles and now needs a transmission. Ford Motor Company needs to stand by their product and help those affected by these faulty transmissions.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated with the transmission slipping. The contact stated that the vehicle felt like it was being driven over a rumble strip. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 100,000.
This is related to the incident report number XXX I filed previously. Before, between, and after that incident and this one reported today. The vehicle performs mostly normal, the severe issues are completely random and unpredictable. On 4/28/26 I started my truck and left to take my daughter to her [XXX] pediatrician appointment. I left my neighborhood and turned left into traffic. I didn’t speed up much, as the red light on the street stopped me about 100 yards down the road. Then, when green light hit I attempted to accelerate. The vehicle appeared to be stuck in 6th gear and would only rev up the RPMs to about 4000 and barely move forward. I managed to drive about 50ft and get the vehicle off onto the grass shoulder infront of someone’s house. I shifted the vehicle from park to drive and turned it on and off multiple times. This did not resolve the issue and I eventually put the truck in 4x4 in an attempt to make more power and drive forward. This entire time I’m on the shoulder of morning 55mph traffic, hazard lights on, with my infant in the back seat. I managed to get the vehicle to shift into 2nd gear and drive up the road. Once it came up to operating temperature it would shift into higher gears and we made it to the pediatrician. The truck stalled out similarly at two other stopped intersections and on the parking deck before we arrived at our destination. I called my wife and had her drive our daughter home after the appointment. I drove the truck home, on the same
I am the owner of a 2019 Ford F-150 Lariat equipped with a 10-sp transmission. In late 2021, early 2022 - whiled the vehicle still had warranty - I reported to a Ford dealership that the transmission was experiencing harsh shifting and jerking. At that time, I was informed that no issue could be identified. I complained of this each time I took the vehicle into the dealer for an oil change. After the warranty expired on this vehicle in 2023, the condition worsened. By 2024, the transmission began intermittently shifting into neutral while the vehicle was in motion. This occurred both when accelerating through lower gears (notably between 3rd, 4th, and 8th,9th) and while driving at highway speeds. These incidents created serious safety risks. On multiple occasions, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral while changing lanes on the interstate highway. The vehicle RPMs spiked and I was unable to regain power and had to maneuver to the shoulder while a semi-truck traveling at high speed approached from behind. This placed me in a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. On another occassion, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral while I was proceeding through intersections after a green light, leaving me without power, and unable to shift back into drive in active traffic. There were no service, or warning lights on prior to these failures. The issues occurred suddenly without notice, creating unpredictable and hazardous conditions. Warning indicators
Transmission is bad
The 10r80 transmission is suffering from erratic shifting, slipping gears, and loss of gears.
4/10/26 - I left my neighborhood to turn right, from a stop, onto a 55 mph highway. Headed to the grocery store, with my 6-month old daughter. The trucks transmission (F150 10R80 10 speed) would not shift any higher than 2nd gear, of 10 gears. This caused the truck to not accelerate at a reasonable speed and only do about 15mph. Two cars behind me nearly collided with me as I could not achieve or maintain speed. I quickly adjusted the steering and pulled the truck over on the grass shoulder. This avoided any accidents and only scared myself, my daughter, and two other drivers behind me. My daughter and I could have easily been severely wounded or killed. I did not know or expect the transmission would suddenly fail. This failure to change gears or hard shifts is a classic symptom of the Ford 10R80 transmissions CDF drum failure. Ford knows about this issue and refuses to recall these vehicles or repair them unless they are under warranty. My truck has 85k miles, just outside the 60k mile warranty. My neighbor with two small children has the same truck with the same issue, also potentially endangering their lives. This should be a forced recall by Ford to protect everyone on the road.
Transmission skips gears and shudders causing unpredictable acceleration and hesitation that can interfere with traffic flow. This issue can place you and the cars around you in danger because of the unpredictable performance.
Dangerous down shifting and jumping gears while driving while staying in lip mode .
I have had 3 complete failures of the door lock actuator motors and a 4th that’s beginning to malfunction on and off. Not only is it an inconvenience for me to lock or unlock my vehicle by key fob or utilizing internal control switches It is very unsafe that vehicle will not automatically lock when put into drive.
Transmission Gear Failure VEHICLE: 2019 Ford F-150 MILEAGE: 67,000 Description of Incident: I am reporting a catastrophic internal mechanical failure of the 10R80 transmission. While driving, the vehicle emitted a strong, pungent odor of burnt transmission fluid followed by a total loss of gear engagement. The failure was sudden and occurred without a "Check Engine" light or warning, leaving the vehicle stranded in a dangerous position in active traffic. Technical Assessment of Cause: Upon professional teardown, it was determined that the internal gear sets were severely damaged and required full replacement. The transmission fluid was heavily oxidized (burnt), and the planetary gear assemblies showed signs of extreme thermal distress and mechanical chipping. This indicates a failure of the internal lubrication system or a structural defect in the gear hardening process, leading to metal-on-metal contact and total component failure at only 67,000 miles. Safety Concern: The suddenness of this gear failure creates a significant risk of a "stalled vehicle" scenario in high-speed environments. Furthermore, a mechanical gear failure carries the risk of internal components fracturing and potentially locking the rear wheels, which could lead to a complete loss of vehicle control. This is a premature failure of a major powertrain component that is advertised to last the life of the vehicle.
After a recall repair was performed on my vehicle at Central Ford on 3/5/2026, the check engine light came on right afterward. Since that time, I have returned the vehicle to the dealership for repair on three separate occasions. My vehicle is still at the dealer now. The dealership has had my vehicle for a total of approximately seven weeks across these visits. Despite multiple repair attempts, the issue has not been resolved, and the check engine light remains on and continues to return the same day the dealer claims it has been fixed. The dealership has been unable to provide a permanent fix or clear explanation for the ongoing problem. I am concerned that the recall repair was either performed improperly or has resulted in a new defect affecting the vehicle’s reliability and potentially its safety. At this point, my vehicle remains unreliable and may not be safe to operate. I am requesting that this issue be investigated, as the recall remedy appears to be ineffective in my case. Repair history and documentation are available upon request.
Transmission hard shifting then when shifting to 8th gear stops pulling causes engine to rev. When stopped the Transmission won't down shifting to 1st gear. Sticking in 7th gear . Truck won't move. While traveling it suddenly will shift from 10th gear back to 7th . Stops pulling at that point. Then goes into 8th.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
