While driving, the vehicles (2013 Ford F150) transmission will shift to 5th gear and may remain there or downshift to 1st gear when the MPH reads zero (0). A wrench icon and airbag light is displayed on the dash/instrument panel. The MPH will display zero (0) which can result in a random downshift to first gear even while driving at highway speeds of 65MPH. Fuel economy and other mileage related numbers are displayed as dashes (-----). The vehicle also seems to enter a low power or "limp mode". This issue has occurred 3 times in the last 4 weeks (August 2021). The issue may go away if the vehicle is turned off and on. I have experienced this issue 3 times with my family in the vehicle. When this happened there was no safe place to pull over and restart the vehicle. My dealership states there are two recalls to address this issue. 19S07 (PCM Firmware update) and 19N01 (Leadframe replacement). My vehicle has ~160,000 miles on it. Ford is refusing to approve 19N01 as the extended warranty ends at 150,000 miles. This recall should be listed as a safety recall with no expiration as there is a safety concern of the transmission misbehaving.

In November 2019 my truck had a recall from Ford (Recall #19S07) applied. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCMN-19V075-2645.pdf and also this recall https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10162411-0001.pdf On August 5th, 16th, 20th, 25th, 27th I have experienced the following condition: Hard unexpected down shift, in one incident while traveling in 6th gear at highway speed the transmission down shifted to 1 gear, locking up the rear wheels. (this also caused me to swerve off of the road) In addition the electronic dash board went dark and displaced a wrench. The error was corrected by cycling the power off and back on. I did contact Ford about this issue and they said the extend warranty from 19N01 was only to 150,000 miles and at the time of the call to Ford the milage on the truck was 151K.
I was driving at about 30-35mph and my truck shifted into 1st gear unexpectedly. I have started to notice it doesn’t shift quite like it supposed to.
I was driving on the freeway going 65mph when the transmission started switching gears it went from 6 gear to 1st gear in a matter of 1 second, luckily no one was behind me or else I would’ve got hit. I took it to ford to get recall unexpected Transmission downshift fixed, but it didn’t fix anything it actually got worse. Now the speed gauges stop working out of no where and it gets stuck in whatever gear I am driving in when this happens 2 codes turn on P0720 output shaft speed sensor and P0721output shaft speed range/performance. My truck had no issues before this recall. My life is in danger when I’m driving this truck I have called the dealership but I get the same answer every time that there’s nothing else they can do.
Every day the transmission jumps to 1st gear and stays there. We have to pull over and put it in park or neutral then try to drive again. Most of the times it stays in 1st gear for 5 or 6 times of pulling over before it will return to normal. This happens regardless of speed at time it happens. It displays the 'wrench' on the screen, air bag light comes on and speedometer stops working. We are deathly afraid of even getting on a highway. We have read the same problem on the internet happening to hundreds of people, yet there is no recall notice yet. Why are there no recalls if we are all having the EXACT same thing. Some people reported their lead frame harness was replaced and fixed the problem and some reprogrammed the control module.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH, the vehicle would not switch gears and remained in first gear. Driving normal on highway and truck turned off. No power steering. No brakes. No power. Almost crashed with 18 wheelers. Was going 65 on third lane on a 6 lane highway.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at highway speed, her USB port had initially failed to operate as needed and that soon after, the display screen had drawn completely blank. The contact's daughter had pulled over and restarted the vehicle multiple times but the failure persisted. As she proceeded to drive the vehicle at 40 MPH, the vehicle independently downshifted as the vehicle stalled without warning. Due to the failure, the contact hit another vehicle from behind. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. No medical attention was given at the scene; however, his daughter did suffer minor bruising. The whereabouts of the other driver was unknown. A police report was filed. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer where they have yet to inspect or diagnose the failure. The contact stated that his vehicle was previously placed under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V433000 (POWER TRAIN) which he linked to his failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.
Vehicle defect in the EcoBoost engine causes coolant to leak into the cylinders, causing the potential for engine fires and failure, misfires, collision risk, and costly repairs.

Driving down the road 60 miles an hour truck will shift to First very dangerous I've had the reprogram done didn't do nothing I would like my truck to be fixed I make payments on this [XXX] thing and I want it to run as it should INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Date: July 5, 2021, roughly 5 pm Location: Interstate 40, heading west. Just east of the first exit for Shawnee OK I was driving with traffic, cruise set at 80 mph. Changed to left lane to pass a travel trailer and noticed traffic was getting heavier up ahead. I tapped the brake to cancel the cruise control, and the engine raced out of control. It was as if the accelerator was pressed to the floor. I used both feet on the brake to attempt to slow the pickup, was able to change back to the right lane, and managed to drive onto the shoulder and slam the truck into park. The racing engine never let up until the key was turned off. I did see that the cruise dash light was indicating that the cruise was off before I changed lanes. It is my belief that tapping the brake initiated the problem. Fortunately, no one was hurt, there was no accident. I can still see the children in the vehicle ahead of me when I try to go to sleep and I have nightmares of what could have happened. No problem the next day. We tried to create the situation when traffic was light, but have not experienced any problem with braking, tapping the brake, the cruise control, or unintended acceleration since then.
Transmission began acting a little funny - hesitating, slowing down a little and seemingly re-engaging, before coming to a stop. When accelerating from stopped, crossing a 2-lane state route, orange wrench icon flashed on the driver display and launched in 3rd gear. Went into limp mode and made it home, ranging from 3rd gear to 5th gear for that duration. Occurred two other times, both after about 15-20 minutes of the truck running. Research of similar problem and error codes that were read point to a bad molded lead frame, but I am outside of Ford's "extended warranty" mileage, so I have not spent the money to have it diagnosed at a Ford location. No symptoms prior to the problem. Truck is parked since reading about 6th-to-1st gear downshifts on the highway.
While operating the vehicle, driver experienced complete loss of brake pressure. Brake pedal extended to the floor and offered no stopping power. E-brake was utilized to bring the vehicle to a full stop. Vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and repair. Tow to a Ford dealer was not possible based on location and distance. Independent mechanic diagnosed a catastrophic failure of the main cylinder causing fluid to leak into the brake booster. This problem has already been addressed in Ford recall notice # 16V345000. This is a known problem with this model year. However, the specific VIN is not included in the recall despite the same parts and components identified in the recall. The incident occurred in a location far from owner's area of residence during off-hours. Additionally, owner was stranded far from area of residence with members of a youth group. Owner has incurred significant costs associated with towing, repairs, and alternative transportation for multiple persons. Circumstances at the time allowed for a safe stop of the vehicle. Had the failure occurred a few minutes earlier or later, the potential for catastrophic injury or death was high.
From Ford's customer satisfaction web, shows no recalls, but shows 19N01 – Transmission Molded Leadframe Extended Coverage – 2011-2013 Ford F-150. Symptoms are speedometer will go to 0. Many reported cases the transmission will downshift from 6th gear into 3rd. My case was intermittent... I'd get speedometer 0mph loss of power general solution was to stop vehicle, stop engine restart. Depending on highway conditions this was at times only uncomfortable. My last event was awkward, it occurred multiple times within a less than 10 mile drive. Multiple stops/restarts the engine accelerated to 40-50mph while I did not have my foot on the accelerator. I decided to take to local transmission shop, where they were told by multiple suppliers he could not purchase the part because there was a service recall. I used the Ford Customer satisfaction web site, researched this, to find my truck exceeded the mileage for Ford to service this. So I was in a catch 22, Ford would not fix under recall, and would not sell the part to a service facility. I called the satisfaction line, explained the problem they transferred me to Ford corp, and told me to explain to executive for service. I listened to the voice mail identifying to leave a message and they would get back to me in 48 business hours. I called two times 7/2 - expecting a call back by 7/6, the again 7/7. I have received no call back. Initially my goal was simply to have them clear the way to purchase the molded leadframe or to sell this
Truck going from 6 gear down to first but every service center tells me I cannot get a appointment not even be place on the waiting list due to lack of technicians, I need help because my truck is not safe to drive
Electronic assist steering rack failed at 54,000 one owner miles, nearly lost control on freeway. This is a known issue and defect that Ford has ignored.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission malfunctioned and erroneously down shifted causing the engine RPM’s to rev very high while the vehicle decelerated. During the failure, the hill descent and check engine light warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, there were several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine was faulty. The contact indicated that the vehicle was included in the NHTSA campaign number: 19V075000 (Power Train) and the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,000.
This truck was driven daily and has been owned since new. No aftermarket accessories, all stock. The truck was parked in my warehouse over the weekend. When I returned on Monday morning I found the dashboard burned and melted, airbag deployed, and headliner scorched. I believe the airbag extinguished the fire and kept it from spreading outside the truck and possibly destroying my business. The truck has not been inspected by anyone other than mechanics working on quotes to repair it. The truck is still at my business and available for your inspection. There were no warnings of any kind.
My problem sounds like this issue: https://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1104150_2013-2014-ford-f-150-recalled-to-fix-brake-fluid-leak-271000-trucks-affected My wife was driving the truck when a low brake fluid warning light came on and the brake pedal went to the floor. She was able to pump the pedal a bit to get the truck to slow down. Luckily she was on a street and not the highway and was able able pull off into a parking lot and coast to a stop. She left the truck there. I went to the truck and added a bottle of brake fluid the next morning. The reservoir looked empty prior to me adding the fluid. I drove the truck 1.9 miles to a garage and had almost no braking power. I kept the truck in a low gear to control speed and had to pump the brakes at stop signs and traffic lights along the way to get it to stop. At one point the brakes weren't working at all and I almost rolled out into a cross street into a passing truck that was going approx 40mph. I kept pumping and came to a stop in the lane and the passing truck was able to swerve around me to avoid a collision. When I got to the garage I checked the reservoir and the brake fluid level had dropped back below minimum on that short drive. The mechanic investigated the issue and told me the master cylinder had a leak and would need to be replaced. It was basically failing. The total for the repairs will be around $750. Thankfully my wife was on a city street and not on the highway when the master cylinder failed. Otherwise
Driving at any speed, the "Ford wrench" appears in the gauge cluster, the speedometer goes to zero, transmission gear light does not respond to speed changes (slowing down or speeding up), airbag light comes on, all other indications blank out; i.e. fuel mileage, miles to go before empty, etc. Does not throw engine codes to find with normal OBD reader. Changed out throttle body but did not fix issue. Detailed sources saying its a transmission problem with the PCM or transmission lead frame and that Ford knows about it but will not put out a safety recall to get it replaced. Safety put at risk due to already recalled problem of sudden downshift to 1st gear. Ford recalled with a reprogramming of the PCM to fix this issue but unsure if it actually fixed due to the above happening. Obviously, this is bad. Paraphrasing, Ford Dealer says if they cant observe it, it doesn't exist. No warning lamps appeared before everything happened, in first paragraph above, all at once.
Moonroof guides/track. The plastic components fail on hundreds of thousands of these trucks F150/250/350+ Ford knows full well but sits on its hands. They refuse to sell a simple repair kit and charge $1200 for the entire moonroof assembly. Then 6 hours labor to take the headliner down and install. So over $2000 for something that really should only fail in a handful of vehicles. I've owned 5 different cars with these types of roof and never had an issue even after 10 years with a few of the ones I've owned. There are aftermarket repair kits that range from $25 for cheap off-shore kits to $119 for a US made kit. Ford is shirking their responsibility for a poorly engineered and manufactured part and basically fleecing these truck owners.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that after the vehicle was serviced under the NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (Power Train) the vehicle began to experience unexpected downshifting and reduced speeds and the check engine light was illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 49,000.
Went to leave parking lot and low brake fluid warning light appeared. No brake fluid in master cylinder..repair was replace master cylinder and booster .Fluid drained from master cylinder into booster. This is a recall on 2013 f150 with 3.5 engine but not on the 5.0!!!!!
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while coming to a stop, the brake pedal would stiffen up when depressed and the E brake light would illuminate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed as a brake booster and master cylinder failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was 149,045.
The 4x4 tried to turn on while the vehicle is running by it self.
Horrible timing chain rattle upon cold start up. 73K Miles and Ford is very aware of this issue on the 3.5 liter ecoboost engines and will not address but they have changed the designs in the newer year models. Have videos to prove issue and dealer would not help even with extended warranty
After changing oil, mechanic was backing truck off ramp and experienced sudden difficulty steering. The mechanic attempted to drive truck to determine steering issue when the steering failed completely. Mechanic determined EPAS has failed and entire rack had to be replaced and programmed.
This complaint is about a known issue with certain Ford Vehicles related to the transmission molded leadframe. On May 26, 2021, I was accelerating onto a highway when my transmission downshifted from 4th gear to 1st gear and my speedometer and tachometer failed. Thankfully I was able to pull over safely and when re-started, the speedometer and tachometer came back up and the vehicle was driveable again. The next night, I experienced the same thing only I was in a parking lot and was again able to safely pull my vehicle over. I was not able to get an appointment at my local dealer until June 10th at which point they confirmed it was the leadframe and subject to the extended warranty. My complaint is that Ford was allowed to take the easy way out and wait for a failure of the faulty leadframe as opposed to this being a recall with proactive replacement. In my instance, I was not traveling at a high rate of speed. However, I was planning on taking the truck on a road trip on May 29th where if that had happened I would not have been so lucky. This issue is dangerous and needs to be under a full recall, not an extended warranty.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle downshifted to first gear. The speedometer decreased to zero. The service indicator warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
