The problem is generally referred to as a “Shift to Park” issue. The car will effectively not turn off. I’m unable to lock the car and the lights will stay on for a few minutes. Worse yet, it is intermittent although it is getting worse over time.

Vehicle went to low propulsion mode and would not move at a stop light during rush hour traffic. After many trial and errors restarting the car it finally moved under low propulsion mode. We were almost hit from behind many times because of people at the last minute turning around a stalled car... GM diagnosed the issue as a bad BECM (battery energy control module). Our service rep said it is a very common issue with this car and that they have a few others waiting for a replacement part. I am at month 2 waiting for my vehicle to get fixed.
Our 2017 Volt started experiencing a "Shift to Park" error message on November 2, 2022 when the vehicle is stopped and the transmission shifter has been placed in "Park". Apparently the microswitch responsible for detecting "Park" (GM part # 84955382) has failed and this appears to be a common defect in several models of Chevrolet. With this error message the vehicle will not turn off and the car cannot be secured properly (both of which are a safety concern). Our vehicle has less than 30K miles on it so it should not be a case of normal wear and tear causing the problem. GM has not issued a recall for this defect yet but we see there are several class action law suits looking to force them to do so. We also note that a number of consumers have reported the error progressing so that it occurs while the vehicle is in operation causing the driver to have to pull to the side of the road when transmission operation ceases. Chevrolet released document ID 5403533 on December 11, 2020, Bulletin #19-NA-206 due to the frequency of this defect detailing the parts needed to effect repairs for several models of Chevrolet. We have discussed this issue with our local Chevrolet dealer and they concur the vehicle should be repaired ASAP to avoid the progression of switch failure in the vehicle. Since the car is out of warranty and in the absence of a manufacturer's recall that will cost approximately $310. We will have this repair done tomorrow (November 15) and will ask the dealer to provid
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that an unknown module needed to be replaced. The parts were on back order and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.
I parked my Volt with approximately 24 miles of electric range remaining. Later when I got in to start it up, the guess-o-meter showed a full charge but at the bottom of the meter it showed 0 miles of electric range. Shifting to Drive caused the "shift to park" message to appear. Shifting back to Park made the message go away. The car would not move under either electric or gas power. The check engine light was on. By the way, this Shift to Park issue is not the same as the microswitch shift to par however you could pay for the shift to park repair and it not be that resulting in more money spent… also many people have waited months for the part and chevy does little to nothing
Dear Madam or Sir, regarding the recall of Chevrolet Volt 2017. The vehicle made in USA, VIN No [XXX] has been bought an officially from IAAI auction (after an accident, but repairable) and delivered to Lithuania (Europe), repaired successful. The information regarding the recall has been found in an official GMC site (the details please see in att.) Starting from March 2022 I have been tried to contact to GMC US (Chevrolet authorized dealership is not exist in Lithuania, just for Cadillac), but any help did not received yet. At this moment the vehicle is not safety to drive, because already several times it's has been stopped in a road - the defected Energy control module, which has been mentioned in recall. So, be so kind and help to pass this problem. Waiting the comments Thanks for the kind replay. Sincerely Doctor[XXX] P.S. the conversation please make by email INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
A problem occurred on approx Sept 25 where the vehicle dash suddenly displays "shift to park" and no longer has any propulsion. This is dangerous, as in this case the car was stuck in the middle of traffic unable to move to the shoulder. Luckily someone helped push my wife out of the road. This is the 2nd time this summer (2022) that this has occurred. It has also occurred in the more distant past. The car goes into a mode where it cannot fully shut down or started. Shifting out of Park simply bring back the message of "Shift to Partk". I have found the only way to get the car moving was to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the computer. Vehicle was brought to dealership for service. Tech could find no issue associated with this problem. Shifter was replaced just to rule that out.
Driving and check engine appeared. Vehicle hybrid power train acted erratically, switching into and out of limp mode. Potential loss of control without any previous warning signs. Diagnosed with a failure of Battery Energy Control Module 24296900. Multiple complaints of the same issue from other owners. 5 other same model cars at dealership waiting for the same part. Estimated arrival is 8-12 weeks. This has been a well documented problem since 2018, and Chevrolet has released a TSB acknowledging the issue, and potentially loss of control and stranding.
The car will not turn off and it says it needs to be shifted into “park” after it is already parked. I am left unable to leave my car or lock it when I need to leave which makes this dangerous in case of an emergency where I need to leave the car quickly and cannot without leaving the car on and open.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the display screens became inoperable, causing the instrument cluster and gauges to become unavailable to the driver. In addition, the audible alarms were no longer audible. After turning the vehicle off and restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 46,000.
Vehicle Make and Model 2017 Chevrolet Volt LT •Miles Currently 28,000 •(Car is recalled) Energy Hybrid • The vehicle will not turn off, Motor Light Constantly on • I never received a recall letter, email not mail notification •The whole car smells like smoke and gasoline when AAA gives me jumps • I’ve had two not at fault accidents since I’ve had the vehicle • CarMax sold me the vehicle in February of 2021 • I spoke with GM yesterday who stated and confirmed that my vehicle is defective and recalled • The recall states that any 2017 & other Models can’t be sold due to a multitude of reasons • The recall was put in place before it was sold to me • At this point, I want another vehicle (Brand New, That is recalled and damaged) I’m having panic attacks when trying and attempting to drive this car • I was badly injured and I still am
Traveling from Mexico ,we just got into yuma Arizona heading towards the 8 freeway when my volt displayed reduced propulsion and the engine light came on and the car lost power while driving on the road we had to let the car drift into a parking lot. We let the cat sit for a several minutes and the engine started up but was running hard. After that it ran a little so we decided to rent a uhaul and car hauler to get the car home. Before this happened We were about to head back to California and we were stranded there until we got an Uber to the uhaul place and rented a truck and car hauler, the car would stay on long enough for us to drive it up on the ramp so we had to push the car to get it up there. We finally did and 24 hours later we made it home hauling the cars a 3 hour ride home was turned into a nightmare. Apparently this is serious problem if the car would have stopped a while we were driving through Joshua Tree we would have been stranded on the side of the narrow road in the dark, Or on a major free way, This problem is a safety hazard to all Volt owners and it has been known and reported to happen countless of times so why is there no recall of these vehicles for this problem, people's lives are in danger, this could have turned out way worst, thank God He saved us from what could have happened. My dealer says that they are not sure what caused it and that we may have to pay for repairs. This is unacceptable because there is an obvious problem with this vehicle
At approximately 61,500 miles my Chevy Volt would not start. I had it towed to a repair facility who determined the problem was a faulty BECM (Battery Energy Control Module), but that it would still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The vehicle has been at the dealership for six weeks as of the time I write this, but report they have yet to diagnose the problem or offer a solution. Doing research online I have found that BECM failure is a common problem among the Chevy Volt, of all model years. And due to "supply chain disruptions" people are having to wait weeks to months for their vehicle to be repaired. Fortunately my vehicle did not fail in a dangerous location, however the BECM failure could happen randomly at any time at any mileage and appears to be a design flaw. Fortunately my vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but in my opinion, repair should be extended to all Chevy Volts.
BECM failure caused vehicle to lose propulsion. Could have stopped working in a dangerous situation such as an intersection, steep hill, or railroad tracks.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle overheated and lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where he recharged the battery. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a faulty EGR valve that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
I was driving on the highway at speeds greater than 60mph. Traffic came to a sudden stop and the pre-crash avoidance assisted with breaking. I resumed driving. The front right tire began smoking. I pulled over, the break was locked up and the rotor and pad were damaged. Overnight it releases. I take to service center and they are unable to replicate issue. I had to replace pads and rotors. A month later it locked up again, this time while driving. I became wary of the sighs now and pulled over immediately. Had the vehicle towed to service center. Again, they are unable to determine issue. They said there are no fault codes and no physical issues with breaking system. It is unfortunate the dealer does not know how to repair cars with complex computer operated systems. I don’t know what to do, right now we are in the stage of replacing random components to see if it fixes the issue. I can’t keep throwing money at this. I hope you can apply pressure to Chevy to help. I don’t know what to do, all I know is this isn’t safe. They had a similar recall for 2018 model year volts breaks locking up. But no recall issued for 2017 model year.
BECM issue diagnosed by dealer, told it would be fine to drive car while awaiting parts. Error message simply stated unable to charge. BECM failed while driving down road. Car stopped running, no power to anything, and had only enough inertia to make it into a parking lot sideways. Car was unable to restart for some time. Luckily the road was 2 lane and no traffic. Had this been the expressway the no power would have been dangerous. GM does not have replacement parts and it appears the part is known as defective. Sudden catastrophic loss of all power while driving is dangerous. Car has been parked out of caution to not repeat the loss of power during driving. Major safety concern. 3 issues: 1.sudden catastrophic power loss and 2. Dealer repair department stating it is ok to drive based on GM technical bulletins and repair details. 3. Lack of replacement parts with documented failure of these specifically for 2017 model year.
Gas engine emission recirculation valve failed. thermostat failed. fuse blown. Displayed message "propulsion power reduced" and "gas engine unavailable" while driving. It put the driver at risk due to being stranded in the middle of nowhere. Towed to Dealer. They replaced EGR valve, egr cooler, fuse and thermostat. Plug-in hybrid with 90 percent ev only miles. So at 52,000 there is only 5200 miles on the gas engine. Root cause of failure unknown.
Late 2021 I noticed a strange noise and a slight stutter in my breaks that would only happen at the end of the breaking motion just before the car would completely stop. The sound and stutter, felt as though a clutch was trying to engaged. I scheduled a service appointment in January to have my tire replaced and car checked. The stabilitrack light came on while I was on vacation and also asked the dealership to check the stabilitrack. The dealership replaced my tires and inspected my car, but found nothing wrong with it. The tested the car and it appeared to be working just fine. I drove around another couple months with no incident. And then the notice and stutter came back, however it was intermittent. The stutter and noise slowly got worse and worse, but stilled continued to be an intermittent issue. On August 1st, while driving to work, my breaks completely failed and I almost got into an accident. I was pulling away from a red that just turned green. There was a red light ahead, I barely got up to 30-35mph before I started cruising towards the light. Started to press down on the breaks to stop and the pedal went straight to the floorboard with resistance and the breaks did not engage. I pumped the breaks frantically several times, with no change and quickly swerved and made a last minute right turn to avoid traffic. I continued to pump the breaks until it eventually did engage. I took the car to the dealership to have it serviced and inspected again, and was told it was
This is related to a long-standing issue with the failure of the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) (part #242969-00) for the 2017 Chevrolet Volt, as well as a lack of availability of the replacement part. This is a documented problem in the NTSA database since 2016. The vehicle error messages on the dashboard include “unable to charge”, “shift to park to start”, “reduced propulsion acceleration may be limited”. The internal combustion engine engages even with a full battery charge on an intermittent basis. Only after turning the car off and on several times or later the next day, would the problems resolve. In several instances, there was a lack of power transfer to the wheels when in drive mode and traveling on roadways, and the car had to be turned off and on to resolve this problem. The car has been inspected by a Chevrolet dealer to confirm the BECM is failing and needs to be replaced. The replacement BECM was ordered by the dealer 7 June, 2022, and neither GM or the dealer will provide a delivery date for the part. A number of postings on www.gm-volt.com reported 2017 Volts would no longer turn on or would lose power when being driven, could not be driven, and had to be towed. The NTSA database indicates approximately 250 complaints have been filed for 2017 Volts that include vehicle error messages on the dashboard for “unable to charge”, “shift to park to start”, “reduced propulsion acceleration may be limited” and loss of power while driving. Although no accidents o
I will get a "shift to park" message on the dash when parking the car and trying to turn it off. When it happens, the car will not turn off and claims it is not in park. The shifter is physically in the park position, but the car does not recognize it. I have to shift it in and out of park multiple times to get it to recognize that it is in park. On a few occasions, I have had to leave it on and lock the doors because it just would not recognize that the car was in park.
The vehicle stopped on its own without obstacles. The vehicle fails to stop under adaptive cruse control and you have to disengage to stop or it will hit the car in front. When stepping on break during adaptive cruse it lurching forward before breaking takes over causing a hazzard. When you shif to park it doesn't register and will kill battery. Adaptive cruse does not keep it centered in clearly marked lanes.
When attempting to engage the vehicles drive system, it would occasionally fail to recognize the propulsion system battery. This could potentially leave someone stranded in dangerously high or low temperature environments without food or water. Powering off the vehicle and then powering the vehicle back on would sometimes fix the issue. The issue occurred very randomly and was unable to be reproduced once working again. It would continue to happen more frequently and require more tinkering to get it working until almost complete failure. This appears to be a common issue and found to be the result of a failed BECM (battery energy control module). It triggers the check engine light and a series of trouble codes. It is estimated that the replacement of this module takes roughly five hours. Unfortunately, supply chain issues have recently resulted in owners being without their vehicle for multiple months with no loaner vehicles available and no additional compensation. See discussion https://www.gm-volt.com/threads/becm.343297/
Our VOLT yesterday had a complete Battery Electronic Control Module Failure. This is apparently a VERY common problem with 2017 models. The car is not drivable once this happens are parts are back ordered. I read 1 dealer had 4 just sitting there waiting for the part. Some people over the past year have been waiting up to 100 days for the part. Yesterday at Keys Chevrolet in Van Nuys, CA we were told it would take at least 1 month to get the part is. If the problem is this prolific GM needs to produce more parts or issue a recall for these cars. All these customers should not be without their car for months at a time because parts are not available.
This Chevy Volt experiences transmission's shift-to-park error. This error prevents car from turning off due to not recognizing the shift gear is in the park position. After placing the shift into park and turning the power button off, the car turns back on again and flashes the shift-to-park error message. This apparently is a malfunction of gear shift which has been widely reported on GM-Volt community board on 2nd generation Volts.
Bulletin 18-NA-261 BECM failure. This is a known problem on Chevy Volts dating to 2018. This should have been a recall. Instead Chevy waited for individual customers cars to fail. Currently people have been waiting for 3 months for the part. The car is undrivable until part is replaced. GM should have ordered a recall in 2018/2019 or should have had a stockpile of these parts. My car is currently at the dealership, it has been there for 10 days and they have no idea when the part will be available.
A lot of times when i turned off the car "shift to park" message comes on. First time i've noticed this was about few months back. Then, it happened maybe 2-3 times, but now It has been happening constantly. Almost every time i turned off the car.
While using one pedal driving the brake lights do not engage unless brake pedal is used. This is a known issue by the company and was fixed in later models due to it being a problem. After speaking to the company I was advised to go to the dealer who informed me that the company has not offered any sort of update or repair option. If it was not deemed an issue why then did the company fix the issue in later models of the same vehicle? I have had many instances of very close calls with other vehicles. I truly believe if the company didn't believe it was an issue why then was it changed?
From all my reading and my own knowledge and what I have read on forums from others who have had the same issue, this problem is due to the cars BECM (battery energy control module) going bad unexpectedly. apparently this has happened to many other people driving the generation 2 Chevy volt at varying mileages. On the highway on her way home from work, my wife experienced a large loss of power and the car started shuddering and switching between the electric and gas powertrain as well as slowing down quite a bit. the dash showed a notification of "propulsion power reduced". the car also lost power to many of its accessories. she ended up having to pull over on the side of a busy highway and turn the car on and off again till it would finally work and managed to limp it home along back roads. if she had not had a shoulder to pull on to she would have been stuck in the middle of the highway. the car had absolutely zero issues before this, but since the incident has had a check engine light illuminated and is unable to charge unless the codes are reset. it is drivable again after getting some codes cleared but as it poses a serious hazard we are trying to find a temporary car till we can get this fixed. our car has about 100900 miles on it, but these failures happen as soon as 25k-50k on a lot of vehicles. it has not been inspected by anyone yet as it happened yesterday.
My car had the Shift to Park and Battery Control Module go out while on a family trip with the family in the car, on the highway. The car was in the left lane of 2 lanes on the highway with no propulsion or way to move it except to push push the car off the side of the highway. Thankfully some people stopped to help. My car had stopped with no way of moving on a 55 mph 2 lane highway. We were at risk of cars not seeing my hazards and hitting us from behind. We had to push the car across the right lane to get it off the road. We had two cars stop to help direct traffic away from us while we pushed it to safety. But when we were on the side of the road, we were stranded in 100 degree heat along side a busy highway and the car was not able to use the HVAC because of the issue. This is a known issue and has been for years. A google search of VOLT Shift to Park Battery Control Module will result in THOUSANDS of complaints. It has become general knowledge that if you own this model, you WILL have this issue. They ALL will, it's just a matter of WHEN. It can happen at 30,000 miles or in my case, 111,000 miles. Chevrolet knows this as well as the dealerships. I have read many other stories of people being left stranded because of this. Chevy covers it under warranty. But my car was 11,000 mile past warranty. So I had to pay full price. Every dealership I called to see if they had the part to fix my car said that they didn't have the part AND they had 1 or more of my type of car in th
When I put my car in park , it tells me to shift to park and will not turn off
Control module battery energy control failure part is unavailable for more then 3 months or more Check engine light on Car can be disabled At any time traveling down Highway Dealer confirmed part needs to be replaced
Sometimes after I have shifted to park and push the power button, an error message displays on the dash reading “shift to park” and the car’s power will not shut off. This happens frequently. It will usually take multiple tries of shifting to drive and back to park before the car will recognize it.
The airbag warning light is lit and the system says the airbag needs service. It appears to require an $ 800 replacement of a part.
2016-2018 Volts are have a hung issues with the Battery Engine Control Module (BECM). When it fails, the car stops driving and will shift itself to park. Mine lucky failed when I was stopped but the car is unable to move when it fails. It will not drive on the motor or the battery.
I was driving and put my car in “hold” mode and received an error message ‘propulsion power reduced, engine not available’. I was preparing for a ~300 mile drive and so I pulled over after a few miles to see if turning it on and off again would do anything. My car kept saying ‘shift to park’ and wouldn’t turn back on. Finally got it to turn in and tried the gas mode again and got the same error. Dealership not open due to holiday and am now missing out in plans because I can’t drive in gas mode
On 2 difference occasions over the past 3 weeks, my car has malfunctioned while I was driving. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this. All of the lights on the dash came on, the power steering went out, the brakes would not work properly and I could not accelerate. I had my child in the car and we narrowly avoided being hit by other cars both times since I couldn't control the vehicle. I couldn't even power the car down initially but was finally able to turn it off and back on and function resumed after several cycles. I was driving on electric battery that time. The first time, the dealership stated that the following codes were present: P1e00 and P16BA. They replaced the g1 a/c compressor. The incident occurred again a week later when I was driving on gas. At that time, there were history U codes present for every module, per the technician but no current codes to identify the problem. The problem has not been able to be reproduced since. The 2nd incident occurred out of state and my car was towed back to Texas where I live. The dealership there refused to investigate the incidents since they couldn't reproduce them and there were no current codes showing. It has subsequently been towed to a different dealership where they are still trying to identify the issue. I contacted General Motors and was contacted by a rep who escalated the issue. The next rep escalated it again greater than 48 hours ago and I have received no further contact from GM.
When parking and turning off the vehicle, I get a message saying "shift to park" even though the vehicle is in park already. This keeps all the electronics and the car still partially "on."
Shift to park error.
When attempting to turn off ignition, “shift to park” message appears even though the gear shift is already in park. Unable to power vehicle off. Already had dealer replace gear shift wiring harness when this issue occurred the first time.
While driving in the EV-mode in a traffic the car suddenely lost its ability to accelerate. The ICE started, the CHECK ENGINE icon appeared. I managed to park in the right lane with hazard lights flashing, but my car caused a traffic jam. The battery showed its present capacity, but the drive mile estimation showed only 1 mile. After some shutoffs/starts I managed to get home. This happened one more time after a day or two. It could cause a collision from behind as again the car lost its propulsion ability unexpectedly.
BECM shut car down and has gone into low propulsion mode causing danger in traffic.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle failed to start up. The contact stated that there was a message stating that the vehicle was not able to be charged. The contact stated that an independent mechanic arrived at the scene and replaced the battery. The vehicle was then restarted and driven to the post office. After reentering and starting the vehicle, the vehicle started rolling backward. The vehicle was turned off and restarted several times and s operated as needed. The contact was able to drive to the residence safely. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
I was driving 65 miles per hour on the freeway and suddenly my car lost propulsion. A light came on that said the car had lost propulsion and I had no power to keep driving on the freeway. Luckily, I was able to get to the side of the road without getting hit by other cars, but it was a close call and very scary. I had it towed to the dealership and they could not find any problem with it after investigating for an entire week. They gave it back without any repairs because it was apparently working fine for the dealership. This same problem happened again about 6 months later as I was driving up a long hill. Again, it was a scary close call to get to the side of the road safely. This time I just turned the car off and let it sit for awhile. Then I turned it back on and everything seemed to be running just fine. This is a major safety problem. I’m now afraid to drive this car and no one seems to know how to fix the problem!
My car, like many other 2nd Gen Volts, experienced a BECM failure that resulted in two events where the car unexpectedly lost all propulsion power and came to an uncontrolled stop. I believe the electric power steering was also disabled in both events. Luckily these events both occurred at low speeds, not on a crowded highway, as I do not believe this failure would allow the driver to get to the shoulder. The car was immobilized after both events and needed to be reset to drive home in a 'reduced propulsion' limp mode. There were not, to my knowledge, any warnings, CELs, etc. before the first event. The car has been with the local Chevy dealership for over two months waiting on part availability, as this is a common failure. It appears from online discussion that this is extremely common on this year and make.
Shift to park alert comes on when car is already in park. Vehicle does not recognize that it is in park. This happens almost every time I put the car in park then hit the power button to turn the car off. That’s when the message “ Shift to park” appears. GM has a service bulletin about this problem which is apparently well known. This is supposed to be covered under my Voltec warranty but dealership was going to charge me until we pointed out the service bulletin to them.
Shift to Park alert. Vehicle does not think it's in park when it is actually in park.
Check engine light came on during highway driving and dash showed "Propulsion Power Is Reduced". Dealer said bad EGR valve and/or EGR cooler caused fuse to blow. Replacing fuse did not resolve the issue as it occurred again. EGR failure is a common issue with this vehicle and there is a GM service bulletin 18-NA-089 issues in March 2018. Driving with this condition can cause the engine to overheat as well as cause increased emissions due to the EGR being non-functional. This condition can be dangerous if the engine overheats and shuts down during highway driving. Emissions control systems such as EGR should be covered by the manufacturer but I had to pay out of pocket for this repair.
Shift to park notification after being placed in park. Used to only happen occasionally, but is almost every time I turn my car off now
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that occasionally at start-up or while driving at various speeds, the "Propulsion Power Reduced," warning message would appear on the instrument panel. Once the warning message would appear, the vehicle would not shift out of first gear. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasion; however, the code reader could not diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 33,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
