While I was driving, my steering wheel was locking up, my dash lights were going off and on, and while my truck was on I wasn’t able to steer. It happened twice that day.

Vehicle will cut off as if an electrical short and the Service Stabilitrak indicator will flash on the dashboard along with warning chimes. This has happened twice at highway speed (65mph) and several times at low speed (1st gear) especially while turning. The steering wheel locks and can not be turned. I've almost been involved in 2 accidents this week because the truck turns off while making a turn. Also the MyLink infotainment system screen has gone completely blank while driving. Although functioning, the displays comes on and off. This has happened off and on for 3 months.
65,300 miles on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3 liter engine. Engine lifter and camshaft failure due to the AFM/DFM system. Now my truck is being worked on as we speak by a performance shop who says these seem to be a normal occurrence. Some with more miles and some with less millage. After doing some research online, this is a very common problem. And on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook there is a lot of people having same issues. My question is why isn't this being looked into. I've asked other mechanics, speed shops, and including a Chevrolet Dealer mechanic and he said yes that AFM/DFM is a major problem. But no recall from GM. Please help. This is not a cheap repair, and It's definitely unfair to many others that will have these same issues.
For the last month or so, occasionally when I am going anywhere around 30-60 and I press the brakes, the vehicle will lose power for a few seconds and Stabilitrak is activated. It has locked up the brakes twice in the last 2 weeks when I was parking and could have caused an accident and if it happens when I am driving, I worry that it will cause an accident. I did some research and saw that there is a recall on my year and model. The symptoms it describes are exactly what my truck is doing but when I put in my VIN, it does not show the recall on my truck.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000. The VIN was not available.

There is a recall (N182202780) for certain models of gm apparently, but my truck does not fall under the recall though it is the same exact problem with the brake vacuum. When pumping my brake pedal, my brakes become almost non responsive, causing me to back into my secondary vehicle.
I own a 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 with around 61,000 miles on it. I work from home at the moment so I do not put a lot of miles on the vehicle. I drove the vehicle last on July 5 2025 and it sat in our driveway until July 10 2025. I got into the truck and the dash read “service power steering drive with care” and the power steering would not work and it was very difficult to turn the wheel. I tried starting the truck again and the message still displayed and the loss of power steering became intermittent. The power steering would work briefly and then the steering would lock up become stiff again. I let the truck sit over night and came out the next day in the afternoon to see what it was doing. I started the truck and the message did not display I tried to drive it up and down the road to see if it would come back. I drove for about 5 minutes and parked it back in my driveway and the issue came right back. I’m afraid to drive it completely on any main roads for the fact it might come back while I’m driving and cause me to crash or worse.
This vehicle has been driven only on highway and local paved suburban roads. Fully maintained per Manufacturer recommendations. This vehicle has never been used to tow. Transmission suddenly failed during driving creating an unsafe condition on a 55mph busy road.
At low speeds and turning right or left the steering wheel locks up if wheel is turned quickly and engine quits momentarily, power is lost to instruments and radio, etc. or in one case the vehicle has shut off completely. I saw that there was a recall for this on earlier models but not for my VIN (2016 Silverado 1500)
Problem 1: passenger side seatbelt does not retract. Problem 2: the transmission failed due to a bad torque converter. This is apparently a well known problem that General Motors has been ignoring. The cost to repair is approximately $6,500.00 which, for a senior citizen is really going to hurt my cost of living.
Transmission issues already had one replaced 5/9/24 having issues again going to be 3rd transmission also having issues now with electrical system going out while driving and dinging noise, when entering or exiting vehicle here rebooting system whining. Going to contact car coverage to have vehicle inspected again for the problems.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that upon entering the vehicle and attempting to fasten the driver's side seat belt, the seat belt floor anchor detached. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the seat belt floor anchor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 260,000.
Power steering suddenly quit at highway speed. Found a loose negative battery Pole. Tighten it. Then two weeks later it did the same thing at highway speed. No steering at all. Very dangerous at 70 mph on curved roads. Took it to chev dealer truck repair shop. Said the negative cable was bad and an electric motor in the steering housing had an electric short. Able to fix it at $2729!
I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 I bought new. It only has 33000 miles on it. Last week I was backing my boat into the shop and the steering wheel jerked back and forth on its own pretty violently and a stabilitrac warning popped up and the radio screen kinda went dead for a second. Then last night I was pulling in a parking space at a restaurant and it did it again. This time it jerked and went dead enough to cut the truck completely off. I had to put it in park and crank the truck again. It actually reset the radios time and date.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal tapping sound coming from the engine compartment. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 100,000.
Air conditioning stopped cooling, research found AC condenser cracked allowing Freon to leak out.
Engine camshaft is out only 105k on vehicle. $6k to fix for it to just happen again which these trucks are known for this which is a huge manufacturer flaw. Driving down the hwy and check engine turned on quickly and whole truck shaking had to pull over going 60mph small shoulder on hwy. Taken to 2 mechanics both told me have to pull heads replace camshaft lifters. For this to be a known issue with these motors they put out and cost people thousands and risking safety is unreal
Vacuum pump intermittent failure. Not always but during periods of traffic the brakes get stiff and I have a service brake assist notification come on. Then it goes away and all braking is functional and fine
Unknown
It is commonly known the Chevy 5.3 and 6.2 engines have lifter problems. Not sure why there has not been some sort of recall done already.
ABS system and trailer brakes lights on dashboard come on and until the truck is off and sits for awhile the abs will start working again. Have had several shops look at it and have heard several different things. Started with the cheaper side of things and still no luck for a solution.
2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Crew Cab Transmission (6 speed automatic) 97,000 miles - At 70 mph in traffic, the transmission decided to stop working with no warning, stranded on highway 800 miles from home at 7:15 pm on Saturday, June 28, 2024. - Got it to a Chevy dealership, they had to replace the transmission. - 4 days and $7,100 later I had transportation again. - Do not have the blown transmission, dealership kept it. Engine (5.3L V8 EcoTec3) 103,000 miles - At 35 mph in traffic, the engine lost all power and had a very loud clunking sound. Had to have it towed. December 7, 2024 - Had to have it rebuilt, 3 lifters were broken along with other things. - 3 weeks and $5,600 later I had transportation again. - I have the box of parts that had to be replaced.
Unknown, my transmission gave up on me but there was no warning light and I almost got in a car accident due to the transmission 8l90
Transmission completely destroyed. Transmission known to have various problems had in shop twice and still not right! Total cost so far is 4800 dollars
Going down Highway about 60 mph slowed down to make a turn after turn engine started skipping and making a noise, lifter failed
The transmission failed prematurely (just over 95,000 miles). Before i had it rebuilt, It was lurching forward as I was coming to a stop. It also had trouble switching gears (very rough) and a loss of power. I understand this transmission is part of a class action lawsuit. I wanted to make sure my experience was documented with the other cases. General Motors needs to correct this problem and reimburse owners for work already completed. I will dig up my transmission repair documentation and include it with this record. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Transmission problem. Harsh and clunk noise when shifting. Hesitation when accelerating and when shifting to reverse. It only has 70,000 miles the dealer wants 7 to 8 thousand to fix it.
Torque converter
2016 Silverado with 5.3L and 8L90 transmission. Experienced a P0711-Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit code and a P0700-Transmission Control System Malfunction. The P0711 code has periodically come up multiple times in the past, but would clear itself before could make to a dealership to troubleshoot. The temp reading on the instrument cluster has always been erroneous though with inaccurate readings (e.g. transmission temp reads 20 deg on an 80 deg day) or wild swings in temperature reading. There is a GM special coverage notice for this issue due to the amount of owners this has affected (N192291660), but this only applies to 6.2L owners even though multiple 5.3L owners that have the exact same 8L90 transmission are experiencing this same issue.
I have had to replace the transmission in this vehicle 3 times within a year and half time frame. Initially experienced harsh shifting, significant hesitation in shifting and the transmission overheated whilst driving on the highway to the point where smoke was clearly visible. Each of the 3 failures stemmed from the torque converter. There were no warning lamps or messages present prior to the failures.
I am experiencing intermittent lose of steering control and a stabilitrak light flashing on the dash.
Jerking of 1-2 gears. Also in 5-6. Has not been inspected thoroughly by dealer. Was told “it’s just the way these vehicles are.” Merging onto oncoming traffic, I fear for my safety. No warning lights and the jerking/rumble strip feeling is becoming more common than when purchased.
Transmission valve body failure, first failure around 28-30000 miles, second failure at 44,000 miles. Truck has been at Chevy garage for two weeks, I still have no answer on part or remedy
The 2016 silverado LTZ 5.3L flex fuel lifters went out at 83k miles. I was left standed and had to be towed. I have researched that this is a known GM issue with the 5.3L motors, but I was told because I was outside the warranty that I had to pay the $8000 repair bill for a new motor. This is one a GM issue and a safety issue because I had sudden no power while I was driving and with no warning. The second issue is that the brakes have a serious shake and vibration that the dealership told be they were fine, but it is very hard to stop the vehicle with a tremendous about of force I had to place on the brake peddle. The life of this vehicle has had all services done at Jim Mckay Chevrolet in Fairfax VA. I could not afford the repair and unfortunately I had to trade in the truck and buy a new truck with large monthly payments.
While tapping brakes to park in tight spaces or inching up in a drive thru, the brake pedal shudders and gets stiff. It's extremely hard to stop the truck.
I purchased a 2016 Silverado in 2021.I am writing regarding previously completed recall (N192265660) for my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, which addresses issues related to the rear window defroster overheating and the potential for thermal events. The recall repair was performed in 2020, but I am experiencing a recurrence of the issue. We live in Wisconsin, on a cold morning last week, the rear window of my vehicle shattered while I was inside. I believe this was caused by overheating of the rear defroster, since I literally watched it happen in my rear-view mirror, despite the recall repair having been completed. The fracture lines in the glass very distinctly show the source where it shattered, leading directly to the heating element for the defroster. This was a known issue addressed by the recall, and I am concerned that the problem was not fully resolved, as the damage was substantial and could have escalated into a fire hazard. On [XXX], the day of the incident, I tried to get a service appointment to have it looked at and was told there was nothing they could do since the "recall had already been done" to my truck. I contacted customer service and was able to have the truck looked at by a GM Service Center after they set up an appointment for me. The Customer Service manager even documented and diagnosed the cause as being the rear defroster that shattered the window, yet they still denied any help or offer to repair it. After nearly 6 weeks of back and forth with GM custo
5th and 6th gear in the transmission quiet working due to the torque converter being bad while I was driving down interstate which caused the valve body in the transmission to go bad

Transmission failure
Right now I don't have a problem with my 6.2 motor but I have a TSB on valve lifter repair it states that any unsold vehicle on the lot or in transit before it is sold the lifters must be replaced but it doesn't say anything about the ones that were sold to be fixed the # of the TSB from GM is N212353840 if you would like to see it thanks [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Truck lost power and died while making a low speed right turn. Attempted to start vehicle but was unable to immediately after losing power, after trying again for about 30 seconds I was able to get it to start and pull it off the road. I lost control of the steering as the steering wheel locked up. When I turned it back on the truck required me to roll the driver window down and back up and radio stations went back to the default station, letting me know that the truck lost power. This typically happens at low speed, but I have had it lose power while driving on the highway at night and my headlights shut off, luckily it immediately came back on.
Passanger side windshield wiper, complete failure at highway speeds while using. The wiper broke off, flew into traffic behind me. No warnings, no visible issues.
Transmission slips and stutters, till it completely stops. I have now had to replace my transmission twice.
Rear window leaking water from top of cab into tru A common problem on chevy and gmc pickup trucks.Danger of mold forming inside of vehicle which is a health hazard.
Common issue with these trucks shudders while driving on highway Current lawsuit for same problem
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the vehicle made an abnormally loud grinding sound and was jerking significantly. The contact stated that the failure occurred while depressing the accelerator pedal, immediately after shifting into gear. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated and surged upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
I was driving and my truck check engine light came on and it said engine power reducing and the truck only went 10 mph.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
