On December 23rd, shortly after 530 pm, I remote started the vehicle, 6 min prior, to entering/driving the vehicle. On my way to work, approximately 4 minutes into the drive a woman pulled up next to me. She seemed to be in distress, trying to get my attention. I rolled down the window and she told me “your car is on fire” I quickly pulled over to the side of the road and exited the vehicle. The vehicle was dripping firey liquid. I called 911. And 12 minutes later, when the firefighters arrived, half of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. There were no warning signs. No warning lights. No sudden loss of oil or fuel. Police had the vehicle towed to a junkyard where it still sits. Unfortunately I had liability insurance only. So no claim was filed. I do have a police report and videos/pictures of the vehicle burning.

The motor is burning oil excessively. The motor jumped time causing the top end to have to be replaced. There are many reported complaints regarding the 2014 Chevy Equinox 2.4L engine burning oil excessively. There is clearly a severe malfunction with the operation of the engine and causing oil to be burned excessively. The motor burning oil quickly can cause the motor to abruptly seize, causing sudden loss of vehicle control. After having the top end replaced, the motor is still burning oil excessively which is causing a serious risk of engine malfunction and inherent harm to the operator of the vehicle.

Bought vehicle used from a dealership in Feb 2021. Day after bringing home, service engine light came on and it was determined the catalytic converter needed replacing. Dealer replaced. Problems have persisted entire time we have owned it. Had to have front wheel bearing replaced, rear brakes replaced (routine), Service engine light has persistently been on, goes through a quart of oil a week at least, had to replace solonoids this past November and within about 3-4 weeks of doing that, the timing chain went out and the engine died while husband was driving it. Luckily he was on a rural road, but he was going around a 25 mph curve on a somewhat steep hill, which could have been bad had the roads been icy, as they often are in December in Michigan. Vehicle was towed to independent mechanic, where it was determined that the issue was the timing chain and that it could cost $2,500-3,000 for timing chain repair, or upwards of $5,000 for replacement engine. Neither costs are doable for us and this is my husband's vehicle for getting back and forth to work.

Vehicle is constantly consuming oil with no indicator or warning to show up. Was told by a mechanic that equinox is notorious for this and to continuously add oil between changes. I've also had major mechanical issues where the vehicle stalls and cuts out and puts itself into safe mode, immediately slowing the car and reducing power. I've had it in and out of the mechanic several times and have read forum after forum of multiple equinoxes having the same issues. Chevy should at the very least place a recall on the oil consumption, but should also be held responsible for their faulty engines. I've had the same codes, even after repairs, constantly popping up.

On November 1, 2021 My car would not start. After examination by my mechanic. He started the the engine was not working anymore. I had replaced the timing chain and silonoids replaced on the engine within one year prior to the engine being inoperable. There needs to be a recall on this engine. The event was devastating and could have been fatal. My husband was able to get the replacement at OReilly part store that day. Yesterday 11-4-2022 a dealership cometed the recall work.

GM Issue #14882 - Special Coverage Adjustment - Plugged PCV Orifice in Intake Manifold. Causes pressure to build up and then oil leaks and sprays inside of engine. Also burns oil at a faster rate. If not repaired, vehicle's engine could freeze up while driving. Some models have been reported to catch on fire. Problem confirmed by independent service center - they suggested to call Chevy dealer. Chevy dealer stated my VIN not covered under this issue since it is VIN-specific based on where it was manufactured. My vehicle was manufactured at Plant #6 in Canada. This issue is more common in areas that experience cold weather. My incident happened in Missouri after a cold 2021-2022 winter season. Called GM North America Customer Assistance Center for Chevy vehicles and they also said my vehicle is not covered for this issue based on the VIN. My vehicle is at the 118,000 mile mark and this special coverage adjustment ends at 120,000 miles. I have no choice but to have the repairs made at my expense because I cannot risk my engine failing on the highway to/from work in a dangerous part of the city. There were no warning lamps. I just noticed a lot of oil on my garage floor and took it to a service center.

The engine failed leaving me sit on the side of the road needing a tow. Upon having the vehicle looked over, the mechanic indicated that this is the 3rd Equinox/GM/Chevrolet model within days that has failed. A local Chevrolet dealer was not available to look at my vehicle this week due to all the motor/engine issues coming in. My vehicle was inoperable leaving me on the side of the road. Myself and the tow truck driver could have been hit. The vehicle cut out and did not have any engine power leaving me to drift. Luckily I was not on a highway or busier street where I could have blocked traffic or caused an accident. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the service center. It is unknown if they have any other representative inspect it. There was no other vehicles involved so no police were called. I was able to get out of the way of traffic. This is very dangerous to have engines failing without warning. No service engine or low oil or any other indicator of problem light came on when it happened nor leading up to it.

I have to get the engine pistons replaced at 115,000 miles. The car has consistently been over consuming oil and I have had to top it off with new oil every 500 miles or so. I had it happen twice where the vehicle lost all power while I was driving (one of which in the middle of an intersection), and I had to completely turn of the car and turn it back on. My vehicle seems to have the same engine as the 2010-2013 Equinox’s that has been recalled for the exact same reason. Replacing all the engine positions and other parts is going to be $5,000, and this seems like the 2014 Equinox needs to be added to the class action lawsuit that addresses the same issue in earlier model Equinox’s. I have smelt burning oil and the initial issue that lead me to discover the problem was that my vehicle was idling at a high RPM and was having trouble shifting in low gears.

My daughter was traveling on the NJ Turnpike during a storm and the safety recall issue which we were alerted to failed and caused my daughter distress while traveling at 65 mph and put her in harm's ways. WE RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL LETTER IN APRIL 2022 REGARDING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULES THAT COULD FAIL FOR OUR CHEVROLET EQUINOX 2014 VEHICLE. THE LETTER INFORMED US THAT THIS PART IF IT SHOULD FAIL COULD CAUSE A SEVERE ACCIDENT. THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND THE LETTER INFORMED US THAT WHEN IT BECAME AVAILABLE THEY WOULD CONTACT US. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER THE PART FAILED WHILE TRAVELING ON THE NJ TURNPIKE AT 65 MPH IN THE POURING RAIN. IT BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE CAR AND OUR DAUGHTER WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT SAFELY HOME. WE CONTACTED CHEVROLET IN FREEHOLD REGARDING THE MATTER AND BROUGHT IT INTO THEIR DEALERSHIP FOR REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR OF THE PART AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CAR WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL DAYS AS THEY DETERMINED HOW TO REMEDY THIS MATTER. THE CAR WAS UNSAFE. AFTER CONTACT WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT NOTED IN THE RECALL LETTER THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND A REPAIR SHOP LOCALLY THAT COULD DO THE REPAIR. WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE PART AND SUBMIT A FORM ALONG WITH A RECEIPT OF THE COMPLETED WORK BACK TO GM CHEVROLET. A service airbag indicator light appeared on my 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle has under 100k miles and was never involved in an accident. I brought the vehicle into a Chevrolet service center and they advised that the passenger airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident. The Chevrolet service center advised that the repair would cost $1382 for a new passenger airbag module. I contacted GM and their advisor followed up with me. Per our conversation the reason that the airbag needs to be replaced will not be further investigated. They will not cover the cost of replacement. A case number was assigned but advisor declined to provide written documentation of our conversation but agreed to follow-up with written estimate from service center. At this time the passenger airbag module is available for inspection and is with the owner.

Windshield wipers do not work and have been recalled for 3 months. I have been waiting for a remedy since then to get them fixed with the dealership we have replaced wiper motor, wiper linkage, and wiper arms to try and solve the problem all of which have failed. The dealership is waiting for the update on this end. My car is due for inspection by the end of June and they are unable to pass me until my wipers are working. Not only is this a huge safety hazard but a huge inconvenience consider I can’t drive my car when it rains and have gotten stuck places waiting on rain to stop or lighten up just to get home.

On Sunday, May 15, 2022, my daughter was driving on the NJ Turnpike Northbound from Rutherford, NJ when it began to rain. She was traveling 65 mph when the windshield wiper on the driver side stopped working. She explained that it became hazardous to drive as cars were splashing water on the windshield and it was raining and she had to lean over to the passenger side window in order to see. SHE WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. She got off at the next exit and thought the blade needed replacement. She took the car to a mechanic at Sunoco who tried 6 different wiper blades but it was not the blade but the motor which was faulty. The recall letter that was received in April 2022 details that the ball joint in the windshield wiper modules of these vehicles may experience high corrosion and wear that could result in the separation of one or more ball joints from their sockets during wiper operation. This could limit the driver's visibility and may increase the risk of a crash. The part had failed prior to a part becoming available. THANK GOD SHE WAS NOT INJURED. We have been unable to have this part repaired or replaced and we are without a safe vehicle. We had an appt. with Lester Glenn in Freehold, NJ on May 19, 2022 and Anthony has been the representative we have been in communication with regarding this repair. Got oil changed regularly in the car only to have my engine misfiring a month after having my oil changed. Took it in to get looked at and they told me there was next to no oil in the car and that my car was burning extra oil and that I was going to need a new engine. After one google search I have come to find that this problem is not uncommon and that there was a class action lawsuit, but only went up to year 2013, even though the issue did not stop with the 2013s.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
